Joss Whedon Talks Even More About The Avengers!

Joss Whedon talks even more about Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and the task of bringing The Avengers to the big screen.

I ran across this video interview with Joss Whedon conducted by Rebecca Murray from the San Diego Comic Con Entertainment Weekly and Syfy party red carpet. Whedon gives a little more than the standard responses that he seemed to have ready for everyone else at Comic Con. There are quite a few fresh takes hidden within it.

Here is just a portion from About.com....

And Mark [Ruffalo], what makes him the perfect Hulk?

Joss Whedon:
"To me, I wanted Mark because he connects with you. He is a guy who you feel that he is you and he reaches out to you in a way that I don't feel the performances as Banner have really done. And this also has to do with the way the narrative works, but I feel I wanted to come at Banner and The Hulk visually from a new place. And I wanted somebody that had the quality that Mark has which is somebody who has taken hits from life but is not defined by that. He's taken a hit and he stood back up. He's not thinking about himself necessarily. Mark is a very giving guy and actor. When he looks at me onscreen I'm like, 'That's me. That's the guy.' And he's like that as a person. And just talking to him about The Hulk I learned so much more about the character of Bruce Banner than I had ever even thought of. It was an instinct I thought no one would support. The studio were completely into it. Robert Downey Jr was super supportive. And you know everybody welcomed him into the fold and I was so excited because, to me, he's going to be the first Banner."

You're going to have to balance all these personalities and all these characters, and make it so that the fans are really going to appreciate it, how tough is that?

Joss Whedon:
"You know, in a way it's tough and in a way it's the easiest thing in the world because that's what the movie's about. These people don't belong together. There's friction, there;s tension, there's drama... Oh, wait, I need that for my storytelling so it's perfect. There's no reason that this crew should be together except that we need them to be. And so I got very excited by this because of how odd it is."

If you had a chance to actually do more casting of it, do you think the casting that's in place is exactly who you would have chosen for each role?

Joss Whedon:
"Oh hells yeah. I'd like to say that I came up with [Jeremy] Renner but they had Renner in their sights. I spent weeks - because it didn't look like that was going to happen - I spent weeks trying to think of somebody else and I couldn't get him out of my head. I'd try and make lists and they're like - it looked like I was getting married. 'Jeremy Renner, Jeremy Renner, Jeremy Renner, Jeremy Renner. Mrs Josh Renner.' It was like I had a crush. They just nail it. It's one of the things I love about Marvel. They take chances. It doesn't seem like Robert Downey was a chance, but at the time he was. And the first time I saw Kevin Feige after he cast him I was like, 'Congratulations on being so smart.'"

We haven't seen Chris Evans and we haven't seen Chris Hemsworth, so what can we expect out of those two?

Joss Whedon:
"Well you know Chris is a really sweet, decent guy who's really excited to be playing a really sweet, decent guy. You know, they both have the qualities of the person. Chris Hemsworth is obviously...he's not as arrogant as Thor, but he is as tall. And you know he does sort of wake up every day going, 'The world is mine. How nice. Look at all the tiny people.' I mean, he's a dear. He's a sweet, sweet boy but at the same time, he's bigger and handsomer than a person is. So they bring the qualities. Obviously they've got acting chops, but they inhabit the parts and that makes it so much more exciting."

I hope in the movie we see some tension between Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man on who should be the leader. Not blatant like them bickering over it but all three characters have the ability to lead men. Captain America obviously in the comics is the leader but how does that come about.

When you have a character has powerful and arrogant as Thor who is not even of this Earth how does the America guy just get put in the leadership position? Thor may be arrogant but he's just as noble. Iron Man may be a playboy but he's smarter. I want Whedon to really explore why Captain America becomes the leader. How do Thor and Iron Man act when following a guy who is clearly less powerful than them.

Anyway, that's one of my small wishes for the film other than big action set pieces and a really great MEMORABLE musical score.

Thanks guys! ;P

I was concerned about Whedon when he was first announced but he is giving me more and more confidence with every new bit of news I read.

113: That is going to be interesting for sure. Thor was the leader for ages during The Avengers earlier runs and Iron Man had years in the chairman position but leadership always finds it's way back to Cap. You know, he has been their leader for so long now that it will sort of seem out of place to see the three of them not readily agreeable about it.

I truly believe Whedon is the person to
assemble the AVENGERS together! It's not
his fault Marvel is leaving Hank Pym and
Wasp out of the 1st movie! I'm sure Marvel
is the ones who came up with that lame
idea!

I know why! Because they want to milk more
money out of us doing a lame-ass Ant-man
movie before they put them in the AVENGERS!

Da Benjamins is da bottom line and because
of it, NO YJ & WASP in AVG 1!

I sure wish the artists were running
Hollyweerd! Artists know...IF YOU BUILD IT?
THEY WILL COME! But all the moneycrunchers
do is pander to whatever demographic,
thus we get this NO Hank & Jan nonsense!

DAMMITTAHELL!!!!

DDD no i don't think wheadon is the person to
assemble the AVENGERS together

joss didn't approve himself as pro-director he is almost show were canceled and serenity was good because he was type-b movie and oh god zack penn has made my life hell with x-men 3 joss suited more for writing films do you remember astonishing x-men....

The guy is a screenwriter for episodic TV. He may be great at writing for an ensemble cast BUT he is NOT a director or film maker in the traditional sense.

StuckInPanels - 8/15/2010, 8:28 PM
@Tankgirl...I totally agree with you. He's only good work if you can call it that, was on the small screen...the big screen is another thing...maybe pressure will mount and they will replace?
TANKGIRL
TANKGIRL - 8/15/2010, 8:37 PM
Aki87 dellamorte1872 got that right

people gonna but a lot a potential and pressure and hope for this movie and marvel knows these movie going down the history of movie

i watch Thor trailer brutally honest it was MEH...but i will tuned for second trailer (maybe the first was rush)

warner bors maybe was right kicking wheadon out of wonder woman project
TANKGIRL
TANKGIRL - 8/15/2010, 8:41 PM
dellamorte1872 i don't know but i know he kicked out of wonder woman movie

i don't try to be troll but i don't think 2011 will be nerdgasm year for geeks

marvel is so rushing to make cap movie and from what i've seen from thor trailer The scenes looked very low budget and Hemsworth's performances seemed a little forced.

dc is making green lantern movie the time when blake cast as carol ferris everybody except movie will be fail but after comic con we were not exactly happy about blake being casted so she had to show her boobs to make as happy

still concern about 2011 oh

x-men first class=fail miserably

Actually Joss left WW. It's dead for now.
I don't mind Joss Whedon for this. He seems to know super heroes and writes them well in comics. I regard Serenity as one of the best science fiction movies of the last ten years, and that's only one of Joss Whedon's works with an ensemble, unique cast. He has made them all matter as if they have their own arcs, conflicting at times. Like 113 said, I would also like to see that translated on screen.

flames809 - 8/15/2010, 8:54 PM
113- captain America is the leader because ironman likes 2 take the spot light and doesn't seem fit for a leader he smart and all but he to always likes to take the spot light and Thor is cocky.

Joss Whedon quit Wonder Woman he wasn't "kicked out", and the reason he quit is because he didn't want them ruining the character with rewrites.
Yes this is his first motion picture "directing" role not tied to one of his TV shows, but you have to give him a chance.
J.J. Abrams started as a TV writer/director and is now one of most respected sci-fi directors.
TANKGIRL
TANKGIRL - 8/15/2010, 9:00 PM
joss is associate with fox most of his project are from 20centuaryfox i can't buy the fact he quit

get over the norton case marvel wants cheap actor for movie that why they didn't choose tom cruise for iron man from first place
patriautism
patriautism - 8/15/2010, 9:05 PM
It's still true whether you buy it or not.
He Left on his own accord.

http://www.movieweb.com/movie/wonder-woman-2010/NEktFlltGz3unq

If he was fired why would the project get scraped afterward? They would just replace him.

TANKGIRL
TANKGIRL - 8/15/2010, 9:07 PM
dellamorte1872 chris was good in star trek

patriautism and if he was quit why they didn't replace him
patriautism
patriautism - 8/15/2010, 9:11 PM
because it's a lot harder to replace a director that quits then one that is fired.
The studio plans firing someone, so they can plan replacing him. If he just up and quits mid project then they don't have time due to scheduling to find a replacement.
It's just good business.
Plus statements from both camps said he left.
Why would they just lie about that?
It's not some big conspiracy.
TANKGIRL
TANKGIRL - 8/15/2010, 9:11 PM

Go Whedon! Make us proud. :) I'm not going to defend Joss anymore, you either like his writing/directing or you don't and I fall into the former. I'm a total Whedon-ite.

Besides, you can't please everyone. Even Nolan has his "haters".

Have none of you people ever heard of Serenity? That movie kicked ass and it had the same sort of disfunctional ensemble that Buffy and Angel had. This is his bread and butter and for those of you who don't believe so, I can't wait for Joss to prove you wrong.
