The Avengers Trailer: Critic's Reactions

The Avengers Trailer: Critic's Reactions

The first full teaser for Marvel's The Avengers may have gone down a storm here on CBM but elsewhere on the interwebs reactions were a bit more mixed..

I thought it would be interesting to get an idea of how The Avengers trailer went down in some other camps. It was arguably the most anticipated teaser in CBM history after all. Did it disappoint? Well judging from the reactions here seemingly not but the same can't be said for everyone.

Here are some quotes from various other parties around the web..

Katey Rich from Cinemablend gives one of her 5 reasons why the trailer may have underwhelmed..

The music was awful. Minor quibble, but an important one. When a trailer is set to unlistenable modern rock, it always seems to be straining to appeal to a young male audience while irritating the hell out of everybody else. Don't they know that young men are going to see this movie no matter what anyway, and they can relax a little?

Eric Ditzian from MTV writes..

"The first full trailer for The Avengers is here, though at first glance, it seemed much more like the work of Michael Bay — a little citizens-ominously-watching-the-skyline Armageddon here, a bit of city-block-destroying Transformers there — than the handiwork of Marvel and writer/director Joss Whedon. While the trailer didn't deliver everything we were hoping for — nor did it have the ineffable coolness we might have expected — it gave us a whole lot of Marvel goodness to unpack,"

THR's Jay Fernandez..

"Awesome. Or it would be if we hadn't seen all of this before and expected every single thing that we saw in the trailer. And this gets at the crux of the Avengers problem: Given the scope and impact of the individual films, how does this one deliver something bigger, better, newer?"

But there are those that loved it too of course..

Den Of Geek's James Hunt..

"Previous Marvel Studios films have been light on iconic locations, preferring a more real-world approach. This one looks like it'll change all that, truly putting the Marvel Universe on the screen for the first time. It's rare that a movie can rival the combination of comic book art and a reader's imagination, but this is very close to doing so. It's impossible to say whether the film is going to be good or bad so far in advance, but a trailer this high-octane has undoubtedly left even the most cautious of expectations raised."

The Stir's Linda Sharps..

"Considering the level of slobbering fan expectation over this movie, it would have been all too easy for the trailer to disappoint. However, I think you'll agree that this sneak peek was custom-designed to both whet our appetites and leave us clamoring for more. I mean, COME ON. That's just pure unadulterated awesomeness right there. Snark from Tony Stark, a smug godlike chuckle from Thor, Hawkeye blowing shit up with his explosive arrows, and a tantalizing glimpse of The Hulk! Patented badassery from Samuel J., Thor villain Loki being all villainous, and even that stick-up-his-butt Agent Coulson! Black Widow ... wearing her little outfit!"

One recurring gripe seems to be that Marvel missed out on a big opportunity to show us even a quick glimpse of the full team assembled. I'm not sure a second of them standing around chatting in a lab really counts. There really should have been one final team shot in costume but instead for whatever reason this particular trailer belonged to Tony Stark. Personally I still really liked it, I was mildly disappointed and agree with some of the criticisms listed above but it was just the first trailer and as a tease it worked fine. It certainly has me chomping at the bit to see more so that must be proof that it worked anyway.

Trailer was great. I normally could care less about what critics have to say, but really critics??

The trailer was EXTREMELY underwhelming. I agree with @RorMachine that Marvel needs to stop playing lame rock songs during their trailers and start scoring their trailers with music that's orchestrated. Remember how floored all of us were when the final GL trailer came out? That's how we should be after seeing the frickin Avengers trailer. But the trailer didn't feel epic at all.

Not only that, but I hated Tony Stark's one-liners. I also hated how the trailer was 90% Iron Man. And does anyone else think that Thor's sleeveless costume looks like something I'd pick up at party city?

In summary I think the trailer had the feel of a movie that's still VERY early in post-production. Out of all the teaser trailers so far I think the Amazing Spider-Man has the best one. Ironic, seeing as most people on this site hated it. I thought it was brilliant.

people who didnt like the music.. I am not much of a fan of rock music, but its pretty obvious that they were going to choose something like that going for the huge TEAM UP. "WE'RE In This Together" was a good choice... They could have done much MUCH Worse....

And it still pains me to say this but
The Avengers>Amazing Spider-man> The Dark Knight Rises

All of them look great though

AmonWarmann - 10/12/2011, 8:57 AM
@indoraptor12 - They could have done far worse with the music, though I would have preferred an orchestrated score in the background. But the Amazing Spider-Man teaser is nothing compared to this or the teaser for TDKR.

Didn't think much of the trailer at a llll.
Looked kind of amateur or something, and more like film footage of a photoshoot as opposed to a film.
Still though, I've seen great films that had bad trailers, and vice versa, so I'll reserve judgement.

If you get past the nerdgasm of seeing all of your favorite heroes in one movie, you will realize that the trailer is pretty forgettable.

Alot of these are valid criticisms. Marvel is still keeping much of their work hidden, so they cant exactly show us everything. But I can't think of a single thing wrong with the footage we saw, and I have 0 doubts about this movie being awesome.

I love Avengers. I love Nine Inch Nails. I love We're In This Together Now. "Unlistenable" my butt. And I know a helluva lot of girls who like NIN...something tells me that reviewer only likes indie music.

PS that song isn't all that modern, its 12 years old, just like how the Iron Man trailers used decade old Tool songs. Which i also loved lol.

It's so good when the bad criticism comes from the music that was used, or the shots with the extras. May 2012 can't be here soon enough!!

Why does eveyone keep going on aboput how much Stark is in the trailer? He's a popular character and has a few great lines which are funny; humour is a major factor in getting audiences to warm to a film, and seeing as a trailers' job is to promote the film, then ofcourse they will use him. And ofcourse it didn't show us that much- its a bloody trailer!!! And they can't show some footage because not all of it is ready- shooting didnt finish that long ago!

I thought it served it's purpose. It gave fans a taste of seeing Marvel's heroes interacting with one another without giving too much away and got me more amped for the film.

But what's important people is IT'S JUST A TRAILER. I don't understand how it is that people are so damn sardonic with them. They're just advertisements. They aren't meant to be critiqued or over-analyzed, or hell, even get commentaries! They're just here to say "Hey! This movie is coming soon! Here's a taste. It's delicious; now go watch it."

xcrementus - 10/12/2011, 9:11 AM
I think everybody's forgetting that filming wrapped up a matter of days/weeks ago. You're not gonna get a lot of CGI at the moment, just basics ala the first Thor & Cap trailers. Trailer #2 is the real money shot. Oh, and put another NIN song please lol.

The singer of that song can't even sing it these days, cus it hurts his voice too much, so he gets members of the fan club to during the soundcheck. that's badass.

I have to agree with you on that. I enjoyed the trailer and it raised my excitement level for the movie but it was no where near epic like most users on here were saying. Sadly I kind of agree with a few of the statements here from these critics.

This was a teaser trailer. They just wanted to give us the idea of what the Avengers team is supposed to be. They didn't introduce us to the team members. They didn't introduce us to the villain(s). They didn't give us the plot. That's what the 2nd and 3rd trailers are for. This was just a tease. And that's exactly what it was supposed to be.

JohnTom88 - 10/12/2011, 9:18 AM
Yeah comic people keep saying there should be less screen time for Robert Downey Jr/Tony Stark and obviously they want Steve Rogers having more scenes. In the movie-going world, Tony Stark is the man. This is just a trailer and Whedon has promised an equal treatment for the big 3 and perhaps a slant to Captain America.

Iron Man never gets any respect does he? If it's not for him or actually RDJ, there won't be any Avengers movie. Don't forget the old Avengers comic is really just Captain America and Friends. Only newer Avengers comic acknowledge dualism of leadership.

If Joss allows RDJ to JUST be RDJ, this movie will be nothing more than Iron Man 2.5. I'm hoping that most of RDJ's improv takes find the cutting room floor during editing. The movie Iron Man And Friends won't pack those seats after the meh-tastic IM2.

I think, no matter what, there will always be this group of haters out there that are praying for this movie to fail. But it won't. They're probably die hard DC fans.

Trailer kicked ass. I felt the song was a good action-related soundtrack for the trailer. Nine Inch Nails is one of the greatest bands of all time. You have to remember it's subjective, but a lot of other musicians agree. Trent Reznor is one of the best minds to come out of music in the last 30 years. Period.

@JLA2014 - Even if this were "Iron Man & friends" like you say, that would only help it, not hurt it.

Iron Man - $585,174,222 ($140 million budget)
Iron Man 2 - $623,933,331 ($200 million budget)

You want a bomb:

Green Lantern - $219,851,172 ($200 million budget)

@ JLA2014

of course marvel are gonna promote the movie with footage of iron man,its not rocket science but i'll explain it too you if you want.

iron man 2 $622,056,974

iron man $585,174,222

thor $448,512,824

captain america the first avenger $361,369,533

the incredible hulk $263,427,551

these figures to not include dvd/blu-ray sales,so iron man being the most popular it seems to make sense in promoting the movie with iron man.

so you run along now & watch your justice league movie,oh dear my mistake there isn't a justice league movie to look forward too.

I used to hammer this song again...and again...and again...when i was 16. And today after that trailer, I have been spinning it all day.

Good music makes you feel something...and I feel pumped. Pumped for Marvel bringing home the bacon. Pumped for Downey, and Ruffalo, and Evans and Hemsworth and Renner, who work damn hard. Pumped for Whedon who deserves this oh-so-much. And pumped for myself, for a dream come true.

Is it May 2012 yet?....how about now?...now?

I don't care what critics say. They're just ordinary people that couldn't cut it as a real journalist and were lucky enough to land a job that lets them watch free movies all day.

I think it's a great trailer especially considering principal photography just ended. It wasn't as "epic" as I thought it would be, but it was really good.
JohnTom88
JohnTom88 - 10/12/2011, 9:30 AM
The supposed Justice League movie will probably have Batman as the main man so what's the difference with Avengers having Iron Man as just one of the main men (Whedon have said Steve Rogers is the Luke Skywalker /Captain Kirk of the movie so Steve probably is the man of the hour)?

I know DC people don't get Iron Man because how come a man so flawed can be a hero. DC people and old Marvel readers don't get Iron Man.
