Last night, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had little to say about Batgirl's cancellation, and seemed overall dismissive of the movie. His insinuation that the DC Comics adaptation wasn't good enough to be released must have stung filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and the former has taken to Instagram to share a new behind-the-scenes photo.
This is bound to get fans talking as it shows the director standing between Leslie Grace's Batgirl and Michael Keaton's Batman.
That's a redesigned Batsuit the latter is wearing, and it looks oddly similar to Val Kilmer and George Clooney's costumes (minus the nipples, of course). Will the directors continue to drop photos like this one similar to what Zack Snyder did with his "Snyder Cut" of Justice League?
We'd probably rather they didn't - especially if it leads to a relentless #ReleaseBatgirl social media campaign - but this feels more like a director offering fans a glimpse into what might have been. Either way, we wouldn't be against getting to see some shots of this movie's characters before they ended up being thrown on the trash heap somewhere inside Warner Bros.
Interestingly, El Arbi would also go on to share a screenshot of an email he received from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "My friends I had to reach out and let you know we are all thinking about you both," he started. "Because of the wonderful news about the wedding (congrats!) and the disappointing news about Batgirl."
"Very proud of you guys for all the amazing work you do and particularly Ms. Marvel of course! Can't wait to see what is next for you. Hope to see you soon."
The directing duo's work on Ms. Marvel received widespread critical acclaim, so they'll no doubt be welcomed back by Marvel Studios. However, the repeated claims that Batgirl simply wasn't any good are bound to hurt their standing in Hollywood, even in the wake of other recent successes.
