Joss Whedon Wanted To Adapt An Unexpected Comic Book Storyline For His BATGIRL Movie

Joss Whedon is no longer directing Batgirl and regardless of whether or not the explanation for his departure is accurate, some new details have surfaced in regards to his plans for the movie revolving around Barbara Gordon. According to Variety, Whedon was looking to adapt "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!" That story was the title of Detective Comics Vol. 1 #359, the debut of Batgirl in the comics.

The issue revolved around the youngster suiting up for the first time and aiding Batman and Robin as they took down Killer-Moth and his Moth-Men. Regardless of whether or not he would have been the big bad, Whedon was clearly planning to tell the character's origin story and the first time she suited up as the hero. That would have presumably meant appearances from Batman and Jim Gordon.

Most fans assumed that the movie would pick up with an older Barbara after she's recovered from being shot by The Joker but Whedon was clearly envisioning a younger take on the character which would have served as an introduction. No matter where the project goes from here, it's going to be interesting seeing how she's brought to the big screen and which iteration of Batgirl we get.

@BigChinese - It must have been hard trying to figure out how to shoehorn in a batgirl origin into this cluster F of a universe

"Most fans assumed that the movie would pick up with an older Barbara after she's recovered from being shot by The Joker " That should be in a sequel, after her being oracle in a movie.

Love oracle.

@CrazyCipher - I love me some Oracle but the concept is so stupid when the wider DC universe is concerned. You’re telling me that in a universe of cyborgs, magic, nanites and aliens there wasn’t a single way Bruce freakin Wayne couldn’t heal Barbara?

@AstonishingArachnid - Eh, i always thought it was back in the time when the tech wasnt quite there yet, and bruce wasnt aware of everything.

You raise a good point.

@BlindWedjat - Glad you loved it. It was very thought provoking, which is odd for me.

@CrazyCipher - Thanks! And it really is. I watched it with a packed theatre so there was so much joy and laughter and commentary, but I think I need to watch it again to really digest the dialogue. Some pretty heavy stuff was said in this film. Killmonger's motivations were so attractive, yet dangerous. And I love that the basis of his experiences and motivations changes T'Challa's mind at the end of the film. Can't think of any other superhero movie that does that.

@BlindWedjat - It was just a beautiful movie. Like you I can’t say this scene was better than that scene. Everyone had their moment to shine.

Letitia Wright’s Shuri was brilliant. MBJ, outstanding! Andy Serkis not in a mo-cap suit is a strange thing to see. My daughter was surprised to learn he was Sméagol in LotR and The Hobbit. And Martin Freeman was Bilbo haha

This was one of the first times I think I paid attention to the score.

@ChangAlang - I loved Andy Serkis' Klaw. I hope he comes back at a point. And MBJ's Killmonger too.

The score is a whole different beast altogether. The way it just uplifts every scene even more made the film really powerful.

@BlindWedjat - To me Black Panther is good but I just can't agree that it's the greatest MCU movie as everyone has been telling me. To me Winter Soldier is still the best.

Wait people thought it would take place after she was shot? Why? Because it’s DC and they like to skip ahead? I always thought that it was going to be an origin story.
