The website, 1989batman.com, has posted some fantastic never-before-seen images of an unused set built for Tim Burton's Batman Returns. It's a store, located in Gotham Square, that sold nothing but Batman merchandise. Daniel Waters, who wrote screenplay, originally planned to give the Batman store a fairly significant role in the film as it would've appeared in the opening scene and then later on when The Penguin's Red Triangle Circus Gang terrorized Gotham City. Below, are images of the set and excerpts from Waters' script.

FROM OUT OF THE DARKNESS OF THE OPENING CREDITS WE GO TO...

EXT. A STORE--EARLY EVENING OF THE CURRENT ERA

Where the Batman logo fills the frame with a portentous soundtrack boom. A playful salvo of snowballs reverberates against this image as the logo is revealed to be a hanging centerpiece in the window of a Batman merchandising store, along with Batman sleds, lunch boxes, T-shirts, and ticking clocks...

The store was going to be destroyed by The Devil Fire Breather, but when Burton decided to ditch the Batman store it was replaced with a mundane toy shop.
EXT. THE PLAZA--NIGHT

A FIRE BREATHER smashes open a big hole in the Batman Store display window with his Fire-rod. He sticks his rod in his mouth, then bellows a cloud of flame onto the Batman merchandise.

Skip to the :25 mark to watch

And that's not all. See the Batman sleds in the display window (above). In the original script, the sled would've appeared twice. In one scene, a father would've been seen hiding the gift from his son in front of the Shreck department store, and in another scene the Strongman, from the Red Triangle Circus Gang, would've flung the sled at Jim Gordon's car. In the film, the Strongman at one point does swing a sled, but it isn't a Batman sled. You can watch that at the :55 mark in the video below.

In the second of the blockbuster Batman films, the physically deformed criminal genius The Penguin threatens Gotham City--and, helpless, the entire city can only pray that Batman Returns. Only Batman (Michael Keaton) can defend the city from total chaos as The Penguin (Danny DeVito) lays twisted waste to a great metropolis. Meanwhile, the Dark Knight may have met his equal in the lethally lithe Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer)--only he doesn't know if she is feline friend ... or foe.

Starring: Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Christopher Walken as Max Shreck Directed by Tim Burton * Screenplay by Daniel Waters

I don't know if I knew about this, but I did know about one cut scene, I think from the Sam Hamm Batman II script, where outside vendors were selling parts from the Batman '89 Batwing.

I caught it before it vanished, haha. And it shouldn't cause any fuss, it wasn't "attacking" Returns. You were right on if I do type so myself. I very much believe it's why Burton and ultimately Keaton did not return, they didn't like straddling the fence of dark and campy to appease the studio. Considering what we got from Batman and Robin, it's clear Burton had to fight hard to make Returns as close to Batman as it was.

based on your greater than symbols I assumed tDKR would be further down your list, hahaha.

Tis a solid list. Personally, I'd have Batman, tDKR, Batman Returns as 3,4,5. I LOVED Returns as a kid, but I watched it recently and I cringed quite a bit. If I'd just held onto the nostalgia my list would be different. haha

Batman Returns is what got me full blown into Batman and really comics in general. I knew who Bats Superman and Spider Man were but I wasn't really invested into this awesome world of comics until then. First comic I ever received shortly after watching Returns in theatres was early Knightfall where Bane breaks all the inmates from Arkham. Had all the toys from the Kenner lineup including Wayne Manor and the custom coupe lol, saw the original 1989 movie in store and made my dad buy it for me then the knowledge blossomed once Batman: TAS graced the TV in sept of that year and I've been a diehard fan of Batman ever since. Thank you Batman Returns.

Yeah I was 8 when Batman Returns came out. I still have the Batman Returns trading cards. I have or had a couple of the penguins with rocket launchers. I loved that movie more than Batman when I was a kid, maybe because it appealed/targeted me more.

I'm glad the Batman merchandise store didn't end up in the movie.

That would've been too much.

I do remember this described in the screenplay I used to have but I can also see the directorial discussion to alter it to avoid being self-referential.

On another note, looking back at Batman '89 and Batman Returns, I realize that Michael Keaton's Batman is sociopath (or, depending on your take, psychopath) on par with the Punisher... or perhaps, worse. I mean, in the clip above he burns a man alive and in the corse of the two films he kills at least dozens (possibly hundreds) of people (after all, we don't even know how many people he blew up in the Axis Chemical Plant or the exact number he machine guns while in the Batwing, going after the Jokern etc.)...

I couldn't find a screencap, but I remember in the episode I Am The Night of Batman TAS, they had a shop selling Batman merchandise.

You even saw a kid proudly wearing a Batman costume while his mom was paying for it.

They did have a scene similar to this, but with other toys. There's even a Ninja Turtle in there.
Also, McGee is right. They did have a shop selling Bat-merchandise in I Am The Night, which was strange because that was one of the darker episodes. I guess they were going for contrast.
I still love the Burton/Keaton flicks, despite Batman being very Punisher, as FoxForceFive puts it.
There's nothing quite like those movies. I put them both on the other day and I felt like a very poor and very fat man who can never afford to eat, financially or physically and then every once in a while I break out the chocolate and caramel. That's what those movies are like. Delicious.

Has anyone seen Birdman, yet? It's so good. Oscars for everyone.

Y'know what still bugs me about '89, though?
Where the fvck do all those goons come from, when Batman reaches the top of the Cathedral?!
We see the Joker take Vicki up there, we see Batman follow them, then the bell falls and blocks the way for anybody else. They make a big damn point that the only three people on their way up to the belfry are Joker, Vicki and Batman. Joker even needs to radio for a fvcking chopper to rescue him, but way before the chopper arrives all of these goons just start jumping out of the woodwork!
Literally the only viable explanation is that they were all lying in wait up there and that the Joker had somehow planned the entire scenario.
Does that sound likely at all?

I love Batman 89 but Returns went so far astray from the good they had going on with Batman 89. I remember coming out of the theater for Batman 89 and thinking about how awesome the movie was but I didn't have those same feelings after Returns. I will give credit where credit is due and everyone gave great performances in Returns, the characters were just not... Well you know
