Clue Me In... What Did Nolan Leave As Clues For TDK To Hint At Batman 3?

With all the Batman fans eagerly awaiting news on the sequal to the Dark Knight, fans can't help but wonder who will be the villains and what is it going to be about, believe or not I believe there are clues in TDK that gives us somethings to think about.

The biggest reason I named myself the plot master is because every great movie has a great plot, and without a one the movie is doomed to fail (Spider-Man 3, take notes). These Batman movies have been the best comic book movies for one reason only, great story. Not just the action or the cool gadgets, its the story that sets Batman apart. The realism that makes you believe in this world more so than any other comic book adaptation. With that being said Batman 3 is nothing short than a treat to all lovers of comics and movies, Nolan once said in a interview that he is treating Batman like a original film and the fact that it is a comic book is irrelevant. Now I don't all the way agree with this but he has not limited Batman to simple dilemmas like his predecessors, he has tested the girth of not just Batman but more so Bruce Wayne. So to figure out where Nolan is going, we have to examine some clues from where he has been.

You've changed things forever: As we all remember in TDK the Joker talked to Batman in the interrogation room about the world Batman has created. The Joker tells Batman that not only has he re-shaped Gotham and the citizens (good and bad alike) but that he does not fit in the new world he has created "to them your just a freak like me!". This clue helps us understand that everything about Gotham is going to change, Gotham is lost and in need of leadership, Batman is the Dark Knight because he isn't a squeaky clean front man to lead people into the way of justice, he is the hero that you never see, he takes down mobsters and pimps, not dirty politicians. This clue also lets us know that Gotham will always see him as an outsider no matter what, even if his name gets cleared to truly be the Dark Knight people must fear him.

It's about choices: From the every beginning Bruce Wayne has always made the choices no one else will face and in TDK he made the ultimate choice to take on dent's crimes, to be a martyr. This clue reveals if Batman's name is to be cleared it won't of his doing, he will take the burden for as long as he can.

Don't be a hero: One of the more obvious reasons that sets Batman apart from most of his super peers is his method of justice. In TDK his will was tested when he became enraged at the lives loss at the hands of the Joker, but if you pay close attention to the first and last scenes where batman and the Joker are face to face you will see a different emotion on the face of the Caped Crusader and it is a look of frustration. When Batman had had enough of the Joker he locked the door of the room and began to beat the Joker into telling him where Rachel and Dent were, this was the most aggressive act batman had ever preformed and what does the Joker do? Laugh, and with each hit he laughs harder and harder and finally says "you have nothing to threaten me with, nothing to do with all your strength" this angers Batman but there is a clue to be noticed, although Batman can hit and bumble villains to the ground he has sworn to not kill no matter what, falcone even mentioned Batman having rules, this could mean that Batman's next villain will be someone who can push Batman even further into the abyss.

Be more than a man: There has always been a major difference between Bruce and Batman, they are the direct opposite and for good reason. But with the city on the hunt for Batman and Bruce as lonely as ever, both these alter egos find themselves at the same place in life. Several references are made by Dent and Bruce about the legacy of Batman ending, Bruce was even ready to retire as the masked vigilante until Bent stepped in. Rachel also said something pretty powerful in her farewell letter to Bruce saying "The day won't come when you no longer need Batman" this clue lets us know that even if he wants to stop Batman is as much a part of his life as breathing air.

Can't stop now: There has always been a major difference between Bruce and Batman, they are the direct opposite and for good reason. But with the city on the hunt for Batman and Bruce as lonely as ever, both these alter egos find themselves at the same place in life. Bruce is grieving over the loss of his friend and Batman is being hunted. Several references are made by Dent and Bruce about the legacy of Batman ending, Bruce was even ready to retire as the masked vigilante until Dent stepped in. Rachel also said something pretty powerful in her farewell letter to Bruce saying "The day won't come when you no longer need Batman" this clue lets us know that even if he wants to stop Batman is as much a part of his life as breathing air.

With all the clues that I have gathered I have come up with a few possible plots for my next editorial that we could see in the next Batman film, keep an eye out for it

I wanna see harley quinn and killer croc...killer croc could just be some huge cannibal that has a rare skin disease that resembles that of a croc. That could be a good way to make that character work.

Since "...Begins" it has always been Batman's wish to "inspire Gotham"...well what if he "inspires" the wrong type of person? i'd honestly go with The Riddler play him as a cross between Dexter (kill's only those who he believes deserving to die i.e. criminals) and Jigsaw (from the "Saw" movies).
Now the GCPD (except Gordon) believe Batman to be guilty of these killings...the Riddler leaves "clues" only Batman could find but he cannot go to the officials with these findings (obviously).
the twist could be that the Riddler plans on his next victim being non-other than Bruce Wayne (for corporate corruption???-i dunno) GCPD now need to keep a close eye on Wayne...making it harder for him to get into those fetching tight's incognito.
Turns out the Riddler knew all along that Bruce IS Batman...he also knows the truth about the Harvey Dent cover-up and his master-plan is to show Gotham the reality that even "Gotham's white knight" could not stay pure...and the only infallible one here is himself...and his "logic"

@All: Speculation is great, but everyone knows that Mr. Nolan runs a very tight ship. I would take any rumor you hear with a grain of salt until the official announcement is made.

@Plot Master: First a recommendation. If you want to be taken seriously as an editorial writer, how about making sure your grammar, punctuation, and spelling are straight? The article looks like it was texted on an iPhone.

Secondly, simply quoting characters and shining light on the conflicted dynamic between Bruce Wayne & Batman means nothing. Everyone who was half awake during TDK understands that issue. You basically regurgitated key points of the film and coined them as your own "original" thoughts. They're not secret, hidden clues. They're points that identify and examine Bruce Wayne's conflict. After eliminating your narration of scene's, analysis of plot points that are posed as "clues" and "original ideas", all I can take away from this is that you watched the movie. Congratulations.

okay @rastaeyes if you bothered to look at my other editorials you would see this is not my first time. Secondly the whole point of this editorial was to expunge any idea of allowing characters who have nothing to do with the first two movies to be allowed in the end of the trilogy. All words are spelled correctly and if you don't like the article move on, shining light on the obvious only reflects the tone and plot of this story, which give clues to the next movie, this article is about taking what we know and using it for "clues" for the next movie.

I'm going to agree with AngryRob, Hugo sounds like a villain Nolan could use to further antagonise Bruce and Batman. While Batman is trying to avoid Gotham's police force and take down the mob and 'freaks' roaming around the streets, Hugo, and the Riddler, could cause trouble for Bruce as they grow closer to his identity. This scenario will give Bruce a lot to worry about.

I'll try to be on the look out for that editorial of yours. :)

@plot master. while i enjoyed your article it didnt tell me much we didnt know and i am eager to hear what you have in the ways of plot. joker is batmans ultimate villain, yin to the yang. i dont believe that any villain will push batamn into further depths of despair or tainted morality than the joker. i do feel they will ahve to try a whole different tactic all together.

@DGNR8. i think your plot is brilliant it has a bit of the man who laughs in there with separating batman and bruce wayne, although i think the riddler is not one to outright kill and you threw in a bit of jokers calling card but really well done.

@all. and take notice of the domain name purchased for bats3 whereisbrucewayne.com that will definitely come into play. i think nolan will take this somewhere we never expected, i want to see more detective!

as an added note the only villain im pretty much sure of is riddler, i see alot of mob related characters being a suggested and i must say i dont agree. we have seen heavy mob related plots in the last two and to carry that on to the third with another heir would be i feel boring. if we do have a character like scarface or black maski feel it would be something like the role scarecrow played in begins if not smaller. batman has been taking down the mob for two movies lets see something different. as for catwoman the only way i can see her being done is if she was working for riddler otherwise it would be tacky and boring although i cant ignore the hint he dropped about "cats". honestly hush would be neat but thats alot of back plot to come out of left field like that, hush is kinda of half joker half riddler in terms of threat presentation so its kind of pointless. to be honest i cant think of any villain that could show except maybe hugo strange. and remember nolan likes to set up his villains before they appear so this next one will definitely be natural progression.

@ dellamortel1872 - Riddler I can see stepping in. Catwoman; very unlikely though. Lucius Fox saying "it should do fine against cats" has nothing to do with a future film, it was a reply to Wayne asking how the new suit would do against dogs (In other words it's not indestructible). Unless the Character Lucius Fox knew that there would be another Batman Film starring a woman dressed in leather.
Also, I read somewhere, with either Bale or Nolan, can't remember who, stating characters not getting included in this series; Robin, Catwoman, Penguin or Mr Freeze.

Actually there are 2 opening from BB that can be brought in to tie it all together as a trilogy which is what I read Nolan is making this. The two are as follows

1. Due to Crane's capture and criminal turn being known his job is open and only 2 character in the Batman comics can fill it, Hugo Strange and Harley Quinn but I don't see Nolan using Harley epecially without Joker so Id say Strange.

2. While still training Bruce, Ras al Ghul speaks of once having a wife, nothing about kids which means he could have a daughter who becomes a member of his League of Shadows and after his death takes his place. I think Talia and/or Hugo Strange will be in Batman 3 to tie it together with the others as a trilogy.

I'd like to see any of the following although obviously not all in one film:
1.Black Mask as a mob leader who decide that if Batman can wear a mask, then the mob can too and puts on his mask as a sort of "fight fire with fire" deal.
2. Riddler, a cyber terrorist and THE best hacker.
3. Deadshot, hired to kill not Batman, but Bruce Wayne in order to gain control of his majority stock.
4. Hush, an childhood "friend" of Bruce and Rachel who come back to Gotham for Rachel's funeral, wants Bruce dead and with help from possibly Riddler discovers that Bruce and Batman are one in the same.
5. Croc, a big body guard for Black Mask who either has dry almot falking kin, like in the graphic novel "Joker", or ha covered his visible body with green scale tattoos, Like lizzard man, to live up to his nick name.
latly 6. Bane, if they wanted to tie him in with BB and TDK they could make him the prioner at the tart of BB that tell Bruce "you are in hell, and I am the devil" but Id rather see him as just a big assassin whos a member of the League of Shadows sent to avenge Ras.

I don't think we need another villain testing Batman's morality, that's the Joker's job and we saw it done excellently in TDK...I think we need a villain that tests Batman's intelligence. We've not seen the detective/genius aspect of Batman's nature in it's most pure form in the Nolan series to date. The Riddler would be the perfect villain to bring out Batman's genius intellect.
