JOKER Director Knows The Movie Is Going To Piss Off Fans; Joaquin Phoenix Clowns-Up In New Still

In a new interview, Joker director Todd Philips confirms that the upcoming movie won't "follow anything from the comic-books." In addition, we have a new official still featuring Joaquin Phoenix's villain.

By now it should be abundantly clear that Todd Philips' Joker movie is very much doing its own thing and won't be taking influence from any previous incarnation of the iconic DC villain - and that includes the various versions of the Clown Prince of Crime we've met in the comic books over the years.

While chatting to Empire, Philips confirmed that this new take on the character is going to be its own "unique beast;" In fact, the writer/director reveals that this isn't even a story about The Joker at all.

“We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about,” he explains. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”

While some people are inevitably going to have a problem with this, it does allow for a take on the infamous Batman baddie that we haven't seen before, at least.

How do you guys feel about Philips' comments? Drop us a comment in the usual place, and check out a new official still featuring Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck preparing to wreak havoc on Gotham, along with a batch of hi-res screencaps from the trailer.

My interest in this movie continues to be at like, 12%. I don’t like the Joker as a character, at all, and I truly don’t think he deserves a solo. That being said, the trailers were, pretty good. Nothing mind blowing, def attempting to recreate the gritty “Oscar bait” nature of “good comic book movies” like Logan, but who knows. Maybe this will rock my socks. Or it’ll be another thing to not care about. That’s life! Just those 2 options. No in between.

@Vocloz - The Joker is still a great character, but he is sooooooo overused in every form of media.

@soberchimera - that’s fair, maybe my distaste in joker comes from his over saturation. Either way, not my cup of tea!

it's always good when the director braces himself for impact a good 2 months before release. /sarcasm.
we'll see, but it seems like WB just can't get itself out of the habit of f*cking with their iconic characters.

@Spidey91 -
To be fair, I think he's only bracing himself for the hardcore purists who expect everything to be like (their preferred version of) the comic.

We knew from the start that this would be a gritty 1980s Martin Scorsese-like take on the Joker's origins. And despite excitement from most of the audience, the Joker movie has been hounded by DC purists since it was announced. Admittedly, I was skeptical about it at first (given that comic book Joker shouldn't have an origin), but I really don't see anything wrong with a Scorsese-inspired reimagining of Gotham City and the Joker. Not everything is the comic book.

Yay, just what I always wanted, a movie designed to piss off comic book fans. I can’t wait.

MexCowboyNation
MexCowboyNation - 7/8/2019, 7:18 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - You already know they aren't following any comics. You already know they are doing their own version of Joker. They are making their own story to add to the Joker mythos, which is no different what comic book writers do. Whether it is good or bad is the thing you should be worried about.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/8/2019, 8:15 AM
@MexCowboyNation - But why? Why do we keep getting all of these radically different takes on the character? I understand writers and directors want to keep things fresh. But we haven't gotten anything close to a comic-accurate Joker on screen in 30 years.

Yes, Heath Ledger was awesome. But he was also very different than the Joker everyone knows and loves. Even if it was mostly cosmetic. But to me, and a lot of people, The Joker loses something when he's just a guy in make up.

Jared Leto's Joker was insulting. The sad thing is he actually was close to the comics Joker in the sense that he was ruthless, a crime boss, and actually fell in chemicals to be turned into Joker. But again, his look was awful. I'm willing to bet that people would have been FAR more accepting of Leto if they had just put him in a purple suit with his iconic hat and gotten rid of the tattoos and gold teeth. Because honestly, Leto's performance wasn't bad, and he LOOKS like the Joker. But his presentation was so ridiculous and out of left field and NOT Joker that it ruined the whole thing.

Gotham's Joker is just dumb. He was much better BEFORE he actually became Joker.

So my long-winded point is this: In 30 years we haven't had any film or show even attempt to make an accurate version of the Joker. The version that made the character so popular in the first place that warrants all of this appearances to begin with.

It doesn't matter that the films are alternate universes. They can still make comic-accurate characters. Look at Batman. Very little ever changes about him from film to film. Why? Because everyone knows what people expect from Batman. Why is it so hard to get that right about Joker? And given that out of all of these attempts at being different, only one version has actually be accepted (Ledger's), I think its about time to go the comic-accurate route again.

MexCowboyNation - 7/8/2019, 11:51 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Believe me, I do want a comic accurate take of the Joker, but that should happen in a cinematic universe or in a Batman series. A spinoff set in its own universe I don't mind there being new takes but that is the point for those movies.

@CorndogBurglar - Wait, your comment completely disregards Jack Nicholson’s take in Tim Burton’s Batman. That had all the elements you praised in Leto’s version but Nicholson’s is a way better performance than Leto who is an overhyped joke. Plus Jack didn’t have stupid tattoos.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/9/2019, 3:49 AM
@TedDanson - Re-read the comment. I said there hasn't been a comic accurate Joker in 30 years. That was Nicholson.

I listed all the major performances SINCE Nicholson because he was the last Time we got an attempt at a comic-accurate Joker.

@CorndogBurglar - funny enough jared leto was always my only choice to play joker for about 15 years, since the early 2000s. As much as i disliked any of dceu movies before the release of suicide squad the casting of joker got me really excited. Then the more i saw before release of SS, just made me dissipointed, they were wasting the perfect actor to him
Dredd97
Dredd97 - 7/9/2019, 10:43 AM
@CorndogBurglar - No, he wasn't that skinny, but the suit covered a multitude of sins. I love that scene when he fries that guy with his joy buzzer and then talks to his charred corpse. Classic Joker. He had the laugh, the look, the jokes, the demeanor.
dracula
dracula - 7/8/2019, 6:53 AM
Doesn’t need to follow the comics anyway, no problem with them doing their own origin, the killing joke isn’t even 100% his origin, it’s just the one everyone knows
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/8/2019, 8:00 AM
@dracula - Sure, the Killing Joke isn't 100% his actual origin. But I don't think fans of the Joker really care about what he did before becoming Joker. They would rather that part be a mystery. Or be presented with multiple stories that may or may not be true, or possibly amalgamations of each other.

The important thing that I think most fans want is a connection to Batman. Usually that means Batman dropping him in a vat of chemicals and physically/mentally changing him into the Joker.

That piece is basically required for the Joker. Otherwise, he's just a crazy guy. Heath Ledger was able to pull it off without the chemicals. But to this day that is the one thing people complain about with his Joker. Is that he was too realistic and was just a crazy guy wearing make up, even if he did put on a hell of a show.

I can't see that happening a 2nd time. This looks bad, and I'm willing to bet that the rumors are true that he will kill Bruce's parents in front of him at the end of the film.

My problem is this just doesn't look like the Joker....at all. It looks like a cheap indie film that was trying to be recognized as one of the those award winning films, then someone came along and decided to make put some DC Comics names in it and call it Joker...

@CorndogBurglar - I full heartedly agree. I myself will not be seeing this in theaters. This studio in particular needs to know that we fans are not happy with their treatment of our favorite characters.

@CorndogBurglar - It's a case of we want money so we'll slap a DC character name onto this movie that has nothing to do with the character.
It's the same thing with many video game movies. Where the name is often slapped onto a movie that bare's no resemblance what so ever to the game.
Vanillain
Vanillain - 7/8/2019, 6:54 AM
As I've always felt about this movie: they just slapped Batman/Joker brand on top of a thriller/character-study film.
