THE BATMAN Becomes The Second Pandemic-Era Movie To Pass $300 Million Domestically

Matt Reeves' The Batman has maintained its spot at the top of the domestic box office for the third week in a row, becoming only the second pandemic-era movie to pass $300 million in the process.

The Batman has held on to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row, taking in $36.8 million from 4,302 theaters between Friday and Sunday.

Matt Reeves' critically-acclaimed reboot will pass the $300 million mark later today, making it only the second pandemic-era movie to accomplish this feat (we're sure we don't have to remind you what the other is).

The Dark Knight's latest big-screen outing has proven to be a bigger hit that even Warner Bros. anticipated, taking in just shy of $600 million worldwide after three weeks on release. At one point, a $1 billion total seemed likely, but the movie recently hit a snag in China, where stricter COVID-19 protocols have greatly reduced its (potential) BO performance.

Even so, an $800M-$850M global cume is predicted before The Batman makes its way to HBO Max next month.

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

Ending total BO will be unimpressive just as the movie itself was unimpressive

@Dope21 - 800-850 mil BO plus bringing subscribers to HBO max in a pandemic sounds like a win to me. Especially for a movie that’s not apart of a CMB universe like DCEU or MCU. I think this is a huge win

@whynot - agreed! Great movie that deserves its success. Finally made it out for the second time this weekend and just as enjoyable to watch for all the details you miss the first time.

Deserves every penny. Hope there's a sequel announcement sooner than later.

@ModHaterSLADE - I hope to see more elements of "Batman: The tallest series" in the sequel or in the shows. For example, The Children of Arkham. Their mask design is perfect for Reeves' Bane.

If I was WB/DC I would keep my movie budgets smaller around 100 million for future movies. DC movies actually fall in the 300-to-700-million-dollar range at the box office. Smaller budgets they would be a lot more successful and be able to make sequels.

200 Million budgets are killing themselves at the box office.

The Batman was more story based and could have been done a lot cheaper than 200 million. Joker and Deadpool are a great examples.

@DoubleD - $200 million is totally appropriate…maybe even a conservative budget for a good Batman film. Between worldwide box office, streaming revenue, Blu Ray / DVD sales and merchandise profits it’s going to clear well over a billion dollars before the end of the year. Even if it was mediocre they’d still get their money back. It’s the goddamn Batman for crying out loud.

@TheBatlist - 200 Million Budget you better and need to make 1 billion. Breaking even or small profit is no movie studios goal. When you spend 2 to 3 years of your time making a movie.
