THE BATMAN Has Been Officially Rated PG-13 For "Strong Violence, Disturbing Content" And More

There's been speculation that Matt Reeves' The Batman might be aiming for an R-rating, but the upcoming reboot has now received an official PG-13 rating from the MPA. Find out why here...

Despite rumors to the contrary, The Batman will not be rated R.

Warner Bros. has gone with the more adult-oriented rating for recent DC Comics adaptations such as Joker, The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn), and after the fairly brutal trailers for Matt Reeves' movie, there was a lot of speculation that the upcoming reboot might follow suit. However, the MPA has now officially announced that The Batman will be rated PG-13.

This isn't really all that surprising. Lesser-known characters are one thing, but Warner Bros. taking this sort of risk on the Caped Crusader was always a long shot.

The Dark Knight's latest big-screen outing still looks set to be a pretty full-on experience, however, as it will include “strong violence, disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material.” It sounds like Reeves may have pushed that PG-13 rating to its limits!

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

The Batman is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.

I’m seeing fanboys on Twitter complaining because “it should’ve been rated R”.

@santoanderson - edge lords

If a movie gets an R rating cool

If it doesnt, cool

No need to force a rating, blood and cussing isnt going to make a movie better

This still looks like one of the most brutal batman movies we have gotten

@santoanderson - A Batman movie never needs to be R rated. I think those that complain it should be might be missing the point about what makes Batman, Batman.

@bcom - Exactly. You can do dark and powerful without an R rating. It's been done before and will be done again.

@bcom - i wouldnt say "never" because, if used right, it could help making you feel that decandence and unsafety Gotham is supposed to have. Still, if its not neccesary for this oartucular story, cool.

Anyone who expected this movie or any batman movie to be any higher rated than PG 13 is kidding themselves. WB will not take out the teenager and child market on their biggest money maker. Would I love a R rated Batman movie? Yes but it's never happening.

Killing Joke is straight to video, doesn't count.

R-Rated Batman. Wasn’t theatrical.

@Mrcool210 - I mean, I saw a lot of people saying exactly the same argument about Birds of Prey, Joker and The Suicide Squad. "Harley Quinn is loved by many young girls, you are gonna lose that market", "You have Joker in little kid's pijamas, no way they are gonna do it", "The first Suicide Squad draw a lot of young teenagers, you wanna exploit that"

The decision should be made by the directors, if they feel like an R-rating is needed, cool, if not, also cool. One of the very good things WB has done with DC in that regard.

@DarkDetective - those are terrible examples. Both birds of prey and the suicide squad bombed. The only success was joker, but no one was saying a movie about the origin of a psychopath was gonna appeal to kids in the first place regardless of the franchise it was attached to.

A movie studio makes sure their most popular character's film is pg-13 to maximize the potential earnings?
I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you!

In all seriousness, I'm expecting them to push back the release date any day now.

“ I'm expecting them to push back the release date any day now.”

You see how much money Spider-Man is making?
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 1/12/2022, 12:13 AM
@regularmovieguy - Sure. But I don't see what that has to do with another movie being released 3 months later.

Spidey is obviously the outlier in a year of flops and underperformers. Right now in the U.S. we can barely keep food on grocery store shelves...movies might easily be shuttered again by March.

@Feralwookiee - to be fair spikes of omnicrom look to be short (weeks not months), and many experts are pointing to it peaking in mid-January. Given the information available, they may just wait and see. Another wave may be happening at that point, so who really knows.

@Itwasme - I was talking more about the staffing problems, and the basic economic collapse that's been going on for over a year now, but the panic created by the media about the pandemic is a factor in that too.

You're telling me you think The Batman is going to get delayed because the US economy is on the verge of collapsing?

You would've been better off acting like you're talking about omicron.

How would you all feel if the movie had a twist where Paul Dano is a fake Riddler and the real one was some random guy?

@MCUKnight11 -
No thanks. Iron Man 3 and Batman: Earth One Vol. 2 both did that and it was atrocious. Even when Shang Chi introduced the real Mandarin, the character was underused and the role of the Ten Rings in Iron Man (2008) no longer makes any sense.

In all seriousness I have a feeling something like that is gonna happen. Its a whodunnit but we all know who did it. Hope its something like "the court of Owls is behind all" instead of a fake Riddler or some BS.

The first volume was. The second volume was mostly great but with a weak twist ending. The third volume was an underwhelming and predictable conclusion.

I loved Vol. 1, though.

But anyways, the "Fake Riddler" twist of Vol. 2 isn't something Matt Reeves needs to emulate. He should take inspiration from the tone and lore of those graphic novels, but the Riddler and Killer Croc changes I would avoid.

@tmp3 - Strange might not be available since he might be in the DCEU because of Batgirl set photos. How about Woody Harrelson for Mr. Freeze since he's already played a villain in a Matt Reeves movie in WftPotA.

@MCUKnight11 - You know what, I wouldn't mind a loose movie adaption of Arkham Origins' story. I really liked the idea of Black Mask being the lead villain (even though it turned out to be the Joker) hiring a bunch of bad guys to kill the Batman. It was a fun and enjoyable story to play through.
JosephCronos92
JosephCronos92 - 1/11/2022, 11:03 PM
@MCUKnight11 - A real Scarecrow and Mad Hatter a la Reeves would be nice, gimme a crazy sequence and characterization like in the Arkham games. Add A bit of Freeze too to be developed on the sequels.
Repian
Repian - 1/11/2022, 11:27 PM
@MCUKnight11 - I think of Matt Reeves' Poison Ivy as a "contemporary druid", I think of the psychotropics she makes and the rituals to punish men who ruin the earth ...
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 1/11/2022, 11:38 PM
@MCUKnight11 - Considering how hard they are pushing for that "realism", I doubt characters like Freeze will exist in this series.
