Despite early estimates suggesting The Batman would open between $110 million - $120 million, the DC Comics adaptation has exceeded expectations again with a $128.5 million opening weekend in North America. As only the second movie in this "pandemic era" to open north of $100 million, Matt Reeves' movie has been a huge hit for Warner Bros.
It may not be on quite the same level as Spider-Man: No Way Home - which debuted to $260 million last December - but The Batman has obliterated the previous record holder for the second-biggest opening since 2019. Uncharted, starring Tom Holland, opened with $44 million last month, but the World's Greatest Detective's big screen return bested that during a single day.
With a $200 million budget, The Batman still has a long way to go before turning a profit, but as one of only a handful of Hollywood movies to secure a Chinese release, it shouldn't have much trouble. In less than 45 days, the film will hit HBO Max, and that's bound to drive up the streaming service's subscription numbers.
Uncharted was at second place this weekend with $10 million, pushing it past $100 million domestic. Spider-Man: No Way Home is still earning decent money, too; the Sony Pictures threequel webbed up $4.3 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic cume to a spectacular $786 million. Believe it or not, the movie has remained in the Top 5 consistently since opening last year.
Getting back to The Batman, we're expecting a sequel announcement imminently.
