THE BATMAN Sequel Not Expected To Arrive In Theaters Until 2025 "At The Earliest"

Though director Matt Reeves is currently working on the script for his sequel to The Batman alongside Mattson Tomlin, it sounds like we won't be seeing the movie before 2025 at the earliest...

Earlier tonight, we learned that The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have been assigned to the new roles of Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of DC Studios, and Variety has now shared some interesting updates.

While Gunn and Safran will oversee the DC Film, TV and Animations divisions, they won't be involved with Todd Phillips' upcoming Joker sequel, nor Matt Reeves' follow-up to The Batman since neither of those projects are set in the main DCEU.

The latter was recently given an official greenlight, with Reeves and Mattson Tomlin penning the script. Unfortunately, it sounds like a completed screenplay is still a long way off, as the trade mentions that the sequel is not expected to hit theaters until 2025 "at the earliest."

We figured this might be the case, but had hoped there was a chance the movie might be ready for release by 2024.

We still have no idea what to expect from The Batman 2, but the first film ended with the introduction of The Joker (Barry Keoghan). While this doesn't necessarily guarantee he'll be back as the sequel's main villain, we'd be surprised if he didn't factor into the plot in some capacity.

THR also confirms that a new Superman movie is in development at DC Studios. We don't have much more to go on beyond the fact that Chuck Roven is producing and the project is "currently soliciting pitches from writers," but Henry Cavill recently made his return to the role official with a promise that his Black Adam cameo was just "a small taste of what's to come."

Better to take the time to get it right than rush it out.

makes sense, reeves takes his time with his scripts. the wait doesn't seem that bad since the next "installment" in the reevesverse is gonna be out in 2023/2024 with penguin - and that's been shaping up really nicely so far. the paul dano riddler comic just dropped its first issue today too, gotta get my hands on that for sure.

@tmp3 - it was odd but I think I liked it. I’m genuinely unsure. Probably gonna have to reread.

It was three years between Batman Begins and Dark Knight too. I think three years is a good enough wait, and things can be really fleshed out. Might be an opportunity to skip ahead a few years too. Pattinson will be pushing 40 by that point. We got year 2, now we can start to see Batman further solidified into the role. Being the beacon of hope for Gotham, and possibly getting a more classic take on Batman as a result. There was a lot established with the first, and we can start to see a more traditional Bruce, and a Batman more in the good graces of the non-corrupt GCPD. MAYBE we can finally get a Bullock for the big screen too.

Maybe in that time Gotham can implement some kind of Police Academy. Learn some job skills, like how if a suspect is on the second floor of a building for every officer on duty in the city to not all run in the front door up to that room and maybe send a few people to cover other possible exits.

I mean, Matt Reeves clearly prefers to take his time. A 2025 release, and a bit of a time jump, would be cool.

If the first film was as successful as people claimed, would they not have fast tracked a sequel to get it out as soon as possible?
