THE BATMAN Star Barry Keoghan Auditioned For The Riddler Before Finding Out He'd Be Playing The Joker

The Batman star Barry Keoghan has revealed his secret audition for The Ridller, explaining how that led to him playing The Joker and what he hopes the future holds in store for the Clown Prince of Crime.

One of The Batman's biggest surprises came right at the end of the movie when we learned that The Riddler's neighbour in Arkham Asylum is The Joker. He's not a fully-fledged version of that villain quite yet, though a deleted scene revealed some of the history he shares with the Dark Knight after the hero captured the serial killer during his first year in Gotham City.

Talking to GQ, Joker actor Barry Keoghan revealed that The Joker wasn't the Batman villain he originally auditioned for.

"I wanted to be Riddler," the actor says, explaining that this video on his Vimeo channel was meant as his unofficial audition for the role after he heard The Batman was in the works. By the time he met producer Dylan Clark, Jonah Hill had been cast as The Riddler, though Paul Dano would later be enlisted to star as the iconic DC Comics villain.

However, four months later, he got a call from his agent saying, "The Batman wants you to play the Joker – but you cannot tell anyone."

Saying his take on the Clown Prince of Crime is "a bit charming and a bit hurt," Keoghan insisted that his eyes remain visible beneath all those prosthetics. "I wanted some sort of human in there behind the makeup. I want people to relate to him...[to know] this is a façade he puts on." To him, The Joker is "a broken-down boy."

Confirming he hasn't heard anything about The Batman 2, the actor made it clear that, "As soon as that call comes. I’m there man, I’m there."

We're certainly intrigued to see what the future holds in store for Keoghan's version of The Joker, particularly as his transformation into the villain we know from the comic books is far from complete. He fits into the world that filmmaker Matt Reeves is creating, though, and common sense says the Harlequin of Hate will take centre stage in the follow-up.

The Batman sequel doesn't currently have a release date.

Do not like his joker at all. His laugh is forced and his look is too try hard. Simple maniac with clown make-up is way scarier. Hopefully they reintroduce his joker.💁

@AmazingFILMporg - He's had only 5 minutes to showcase his Joker. Give him more than that at least, lol

Ya know it's strange, I don't hear much about this movie. In fact, I didn't hear about it much soon after release. It's like people watched it said.. meh, it's ok I guess and kept it moving. I totally forgot they even had a Joker there. Maybe because it was totally unnecessary

Lol… what movies from March are you still hearing about?

@DarthOmega -

Joker revealed look was a deleted scene and I still hear people talking about this film. It will be in most people's top ten of the year💁

@regularmovieguy - Is that your measurement? When did TDK release?

@AmazingFILMporg - Most people? How on Earth do you know this? You still hear about it. Fine. I don't.

@DarthOmega

Measurement of what? TDK is arguably the greatest comic book movie of all time and it came out in 2008. We have been getting more capeshit than ever since it’s release along with an onslaught of streaming platforms.

And The Batman (good movie) ain’t The Dark Knight.

@regularmovieguy - The point of my comment, is you saying the movie came out in March as if it's release date has something to do with whether or not it caught on with fans? Yes people liked it. I liked it, but seeing as how this is a rebooted Batman that came out not to long ago, you would see endless video essays, top ten lists, and a general celebration over the film. I (I repeat...I) haven't seen it.

@regularmovieguy - Also the measurement would be TIME.

@DarthOmega - If you look at Facebook, which is loaded with general audience types, it's a very split opinion on this movie. I see just as many people talking trash about it as praising it.

Not like here where it seems most people liked it.

@CorndogBurglar - I don't do Facebook, but judging by what I'm hearing. People are very meh about this one. It had all the elements I wanted...

Detective Batman
Fully realized Gotham
Early career
Great cinematography
Great score

The movie just felt like a snooze fest.

@DarthOmega - Hmm I'm surprised, I was going to say it's one of the few movies I am still hearing people talk about, as well as Top Gun: Maverick?
ObserverIO

@DarthOmega - There's not much buzz surrounding any DC movie, these days. I think Joker was the last one.

My take? People were sick of the nonsensical DCEU (aside from Aquaman 1) and Joker came out all fresh like a quality DC reboot.

Then they followed it up with Birds of Prey and people were like "F this!"

That's when DC buzz died a death of deathly death.

They need a film like The Flash o clean house and send a clear message to every movie-goer that from now on every movie will count as part of a new universe, starting from scratch with the audience all on the same page (Page 1).

So let's hope there are no complications with that movie.
Wait, Ezra did what?!

@Jayman627 - I hear about Top Gun Maverick so much more. I watched The Batman only one time in theaters. I watched Maverick 3 times. I didn't even like the first Top Gun. Batman is literally my favorite hero in the comics next to Spidey. I just don't really care about this film. Except for the cinematography which was absolutely stunning in nearly every way.

@ObserverIO - They made a huge mistake trying to rival Marvel's success. It didn't have to be a race. They wanted to get the Justice League out so bad they rushed it. Now we already have a rebooted Batman, 3 different Jokers, and a Flash movie that no one wants to touch.

I'm not celebrating the downfall. I want to see both studios break records. If they win we all win. But I have to be honest. It's been very lackluster.

I did like Man of Steel and parts of Aquaman tho.

@DarthOmega - I didn't enjoy The Batman either. It was way too overhyped for what it eventually delivered. I sincerely hope that the sequel has a 5-10 year time jump because showcasing a Year Two Batman was just too bland. Audiences want to see Batman in his prime and seasoned. This movies' fight scenes (and most of the movie in general) were barely memorable.

@sully - A time jump would be awesome. Also actual detective work. Seems the penguin was smarter than Bruce when it came to solving some riddles. Keep the same cinematographer. Dig deep and find a better story. Pattinson was cool as Batman, no real complaints there, but hopefully he's a lot less mopey next time. Also... Ahem

LEAVE THE JOKER ALONE. I LOVE THE CHARACTER BUT FFS, GIVE US A CHANCE TO MISS HIM!

@Jayman627 - Maybe I was expecting more after all the hype, but the ending of Maverick almost killed it for me.

I liked everything up until the end.

I really don't like the design behind this Joker. It feels macabre for macabre sake, and honestly can we just go back to the vat of chemicals origin?

Not gonna lie. I like it. The look, the mannerisms. Maybe the laugh could get an improvement though. But I like it.

Big misconception in Hollywood. The Joker and Riddler are not interchangeable characters.

They are two VERY different characters and should be cast and treated as such.

While I think this movie had the best detective version of Batman (even though he ultimately failed) the designs for Riddler and Joker were not my cup of tea.
