THE BATMAN Star Colin Farrell Recalls Going To Starbucks In Penguin Prosthetics (And No One Recognizing Him)

When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobbelpot, we all assumed he'd play the "Emperor Penguin" version of the villain, but the prosthetics that transformed him into Oz were good enough to fool the public.

The decision to use prosthetics to transform Colin Farrell into The Penguin surprised a lot of fans, and when we got our first look at the actor on the set of The Batman, it's fair to say we struggled to recognise him. Fans weren't the only ones fooled, though, as Farrell tells Collider he took a trip to a local Starbucks following the first round of makeup testing and was able to stay incognito.

"The first day we tried the whole thing out, we took it for a drive, a spin metaphorically speaking," he recalls. "We did it in Burbank. It took about six or eight hours. It was a team of ten or fifteen people. And it was really fun. I went into Starbucks and ordered myself a very un-Oswald drink, an oat milk latte with two stevia sweeteners."

"I got a couple of stares but only because it’s such an imposing look," Farrell added. "Mike [Marino] did so much of the work for me on this, so much of the heavy lifting."

The work done to transform Farrell is incredible, and we're not at all surprised he managed to fool the patrons of that Starbucks in Burbank. This role actually looks set to be one the Irish actor is attached to for the next several years as he'll return as the villain in "The Penguin" TV series being developed for HBO Max, and will presumably show up as a fully formed gangster in The Batman 2.

Based on what's been shown of The Penguin in this movie's trailers, we expect him to steal the show.

Check back here on Monday for our review of The Batman (the embargo lifts at 9am PT), and stay tuned for exclusive interviews with producer Dylan Clark and stars Jeffrey Wright and Paul Dano.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

The fact that it’s Colin underneath that is remarkable! And how he looks spot on Alex Ross’ Penguin from the comics is even more exciting. I’m pumped!

I think what's so crazy about his prosthetics is that thanks to technology, makeup, and 3D printing. We can physically and virtually create fake personas with real looking effects. This is fantastic and scary at the same time. Imagine people who were killed or missing and someone is going around in prosthetics making it seem like they are still around.

I used to do special effects makeup as a hobby back when I was in high school (I was in theater) and then later in college, mainly just for Halloween. My freshman year I made myself up to look like a decayed corpse. Spent 8 hours in front of a mirror. Even bought a suit from the Salvation Army and buried it in the ground for a week. Then I went to a costume contest at a bar and lost to a guy dressed up as Epstein from Welcome Back Cotter (it was done by applause and the guy's while frickin' fraternity was there). So the next year I spent about 10 1/2 hours making myself up to look like I had been on a motorcycle going about 90 and had flipped over on one side. So I had a missing arm, whole side of my face was gone, etc. I said screw the contests and just went stumbling around the canvas scaring the shit out of sorority girls. Ah, good times...

Anyhow I say all that to say that I tend to pay a lot of attention to good special effects makeup in movies, and DAMN, this is some good makeup (probably scared the shit out of some sorority girls in that Starbucks too, cause, you know, that's my measure of success :p).

I doubt they were fooled lol he doesn't look like a real person. They were probably like thinking "is that an internet famous person under that makeup filming a prank, or is it legit a crazy person?"

I'm sorry but prosthetics don't look real up close. They don't. No matter how phenomenal the makeup team is, in real life you can tell it's makeup and wigs and shut. That Jackass old man prank is horse shit, that doesn't look like a real person.

They did a great job on Colin for a film... but let's not pretend he looks like an actual human being.
