THE BATMAN's HBO Max Release Date Has Been Revealed, And It's Closer Than We Thought

The Batman is hitting theaters in March of next year, but fans won't have to wait too long to watch it at home after that, as WarnerMedia's CEO has confirmed the film's HBO Max release date.

The pandemic forced studios to restructure release strategies, ultimately leading to a historic shift in theatrical-exclusivity windows. Before the pandemic, movies would usually have a 90-day period between their theatrical and home-media releases. Now, most studios have shortened that window to 45 days. Two of the most prominent adopters of this new timeframe are Disney and HBO Max. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Warner Bros. had reached a deal with several major theater chains to have an exclusive 45-day release window in 2022.

At the time, that seemed to be more of an option for the studio, rather than an exact timeframe in which their movies would be available in homes. Now, thanks to WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, we know that Matt Reeves' The Batman will adhere to that window quite strictly, and will be joined by other DC tentpoles throughout the year.

During an appearance in the Recode Media podcast hosted by Peter Kafka, Kilar was asked how HBO Max's performance would be affected without the day-and-date release strategy adopted by Warner Bros. in 2021. It's then that Kilar revealed that The Batman would hit HBO Max 46 days after being released in theaters:

"Think about when movies would show up on HBO Max or HBO, which is eight to nine months after theatrical premiere. The Batman's going to show up on day 46 on HBO Max. That is a huge change from where things were in 2018, 2017, 2016."

This means that The Batman will have its HBO Max release on April 19, 2022. The WarnerMedia CEO elaborated on his response, revealing that The Flash and Black Adam would follow the same HBO Max release model as Matt Reeves' upcoming superhero adventure:

"I feel really, really good knowing that The Batman and Black Adam, and The Flash and Elvis, and a whole host of other movies are literally going to be showing up on day 46 on HBO Max in a variety of territories all over the world. That is a very, very big change that I don't think people appreciate, and I feel really good about it."

Kilar didn't specify which territories those films would be released in, but the United States is obviously one of them. Thanks to this clarification, we know that The Flash could hit HBO Max on December 20, 2022 (theatrical release date: November 4, 2022) and Black Adam on September 13, 2022 (theatrical release date: July 29, 2022). We say "could" because, as it's customary in the movie industry, plans can change.

For now, though, that's when we can expect to watch DC's newest superhero adventures at home. Warner Bros.' dual-release strategy in theaters and on HBO Max has been speculated to have caused some of the studio's biggest tentpoles to underperform (such as The Suicide Squad and The Matrix Resurrections). While giving the aforementioned DC films a shorter theatrical window than before is significantly different than WB's 2021 release strategy, some may still wonder whether it will impact the films' box office potential. After all, people could theoretically wait to watch the movies at home.

However, that won't necessarily be the case, as evidenced by movies like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Free Guy, which found financial success (by pandemic-era standards) despite being announced to be hitting home media only 45 days after their release in theaters (Shang-Chi raked in $432 million worldwide, while Free Guy took in a little over $331 million). Admittedly, the financial outcome of DC's slate could (in part) depend on how aware audiences are of the films being made available for home viewing a little over a month after their theatrical arrivals.

The Batman will glide into theaters on March 4, 2022.

This has not been a great year for Warner Bros’ box office. IIRC Godzilla vs Kong did alright, but pretty much every other WB either underperformed or flat-out bombed. I mean The Matrix 4 should have pulled in at least Deadpool numbers, but it opened at number 3. Ouch.

"I mean The Matrix 4 should have pulled in at least Deadpool numbers"

No movie this year has made Deadpool #s except for Spider-Man and James Bond. The last Matrix movie was poorly received and came nearly 20 years ago.

Why not. We live in a time where if you don't see it in the first month you won't ever watch it and if you want to see it you won't wait over a month and have everything spoiled for you. 46 days later is just so you can watch these movies again.

Elvis? Didn't know they were making a new flick about the King. Also Baz Luhrmann is directing it. Nice. On my radar now.

Well, the one year HBOMax experiment has ended. I'm glad they attempted it, this year has had a lot of lessons about the theatrical experience and has had its positive and negative impacts on both streaming supremacy and theatrical window. To think, pre pandemic that window was never about to go under 90 days.

Off topic, yesterday watched Licorice Pizza and Don't Look Up, Licorice Pizza was okay, but Don't Look Up was fantastic, don't know what the critics are smoking with that one, loved it

They're probably not being literal. It's more so referring to the minimum 45 day window. If they see that the film is still printing money months into release I bet they will hold off. It took 70 days for Shang-Chi to go to Disney+, heck, even Eternals which hasn't been anywhere near that leggy is also gonna take around that much time.

I’ve watched every WB movie on HBO Max this year and I’m glad I did bc I didn’t care for any of them enough to warrant theater prices (haven’t seen Matrix yet I’ll get to that this week). Now that things aren’t day and date I’ll be cancelling HBO Max this month. I only initially subbed for Justice League and the day and date stuff kept me extending it for a the rest of the year but I managed to get an Xbox Series X yesterday so I’ll be putting that money towards Gamepass going forward.

@Ha1frican - The Suicide Squad was amazing in theaters. The third act alone was worth the price of admission with the sound/imax screen. Otherwise, I completely agree lol.

@McMurdo - Didn’t care for any of it really. I feel the opening really ruined the promise of what we were told the movie was and then it was basically the exact same movie as the first only slightly better. TSS and No Time TonDie are my most disappointing movies of the year by far

They really are going all in on HBOMax, aren't they? This year long experiment was interesting to watch unfold in real time. Yeah it caused a lot of their films to underperform at the BO. But at the same time in my opinion a lot of their films this year wouldn't have made all that much more money if they were theaters only. The hype for them just wasn't there. The only exceptions were Godzilla vs Kong and to a lesser extent Mortal Kombat. Those two movies performed well under the circumstances. The rest? Not so much. People for the most part didn't really care. (And that's coming from a DIE HARD DC fan and a guy that LOVED Matrix: Resurrections and WISHED they both did better because I want better from both of those properties.) In fact, the only movie WB I'm even somewhat hyped about for 2022 is The Batman. Yeah I'll go see Black Adam and The Flash because as a general rule I try to see ALL CBMs. But I'm not really hype about either one of them. So it makes perfect sense they're going all in on HBOMax. Their movies aren't doing that well at the BO. Might as well try and get their money back through the ancillary market, right? Hope it works out for them...

@BecauseICare - I also loved Matrix 4. I love how many people it’s gotten all hot and bothered too. I get the Last Jedi comparison but it’s shallow at best. Neither Neo nor Trinity were butchered as characters in any way shape or form. Luke Skywalker was taken out back and put down like an ole sick dog. Quite different in this regard but the subversion was there

Haha stupid ass WB trying to lose money at every possible step. Why would you release a movie as big as The Batman only a month and a half later up for streaming. What is this studio doing?!

They didn’t learn with The Suicide Squad and they didn’t learn with The Matrix Resurrections. I’m sure this film will still do well but if it becomes public knowledge that people can ust wait a little over 40 days and it’s up for streaming - they’re gonna lose out on some BO earnings.

madhombre - 12/27/2021, 11:12 AM
@TheLobster - Matrix 4 would've still bombed if it was a theatrical release since the last movies were garbage.
Audiences were burned twice after the 1st movie.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 12/27/2021, 11:16 AM
@TheLobster - Is literally the exact same thing Disney is doing.
LameLuka
LameLuka - 12/27/2021, 11:19 AM
@TheLobster - I think people just didn't care all that much.
People went to see Godzilla vs Kong and Dune which did okay despite HBO MAX putting a dent in their respective box office numbers.
But no one was asking for another Matrix movie.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/27/2021, 11:21 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - wrong. Not with its Marvel films at least. Shang Chi came out 9/3 and didn’t hit Disney+ til 11/12. That’s 69 days.

Black Widow? July 9th release date and October 6th Disney+ date. That’s almost 90 days right there.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/27/2021, 11:24 AM
@madhombre - I don’t disagree about it underperforming but do I think it lost a few million bucks opening weekend due to being dumped on HBO while also duking it out with No Way Home?? Yeah. No doubt in my mind.

Recognizable IP like The Matrix goes a long way despite disappointing sequels. Plus Keanu has never been on a hotter streak thanks to his John Wick films.. this would all provide butts in seats.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/27/2021, 11:26 AM
@LameLuka - key word is “did okay” when both films should have done at least great. Pandemic or not.

If people already have HBOMax and they’re not film buffs - why would they bother to pay extra to see it in a theater during a pandemic?? Think about how many family households said screw it - let’s watch it at home. Tons.
