THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Hans Zimmer On The Creation Of Bane's "Deshi Basara" Chant

The "Deshi Basara" chant played a major role in one of the key scenes of The Dark Knight Rises and was used at several points throughout the film with Hans Zimmer's score during scenes featuring Bane. In the following interview the composer discusses the inspiration behind it and more.

"It really came from the script," Hans Zimmer told MTV Splash Page during an interview at The Dark Knight Rises premiere recently. "I was reading the script and I kept saying to Chris, ‘I think we need to have something primeval, what about a chant?’ and he sent me over two words, 'Deshi Basara' and nobody’s worked out the language yet so that’s our last secret, but it’s a legitimate language and it means ‘Rise up.’" He adds, "I went from there, [the chant] really become foundation for [Bane's theme] and then a little problem was ‘I think it should be hundreds of thousands of people,’ and when you’re in the middle of keeping things private and a little secretive it’s a little difficult to find a hundred thousand of your closest friends who are going to keep their mouths shut. I started out with 11 of my friends and then we went to the Internet."

Thousands of fans ended up contributing to the chant which was eventually used in the film. However, as Zimmer prepares to work on the Man of Steel score, he was asked to look back at which parts of The Dark Knight Rises trilogy moved him most and had the biggest impact on his work. Unsurprisingly, it was one of the first major scenes in Batman Begins which would put him on course to creating his epic score over the three films. "For me the crux, the turning point is right at the beginning of the first movie when [Bruce Wayne's] parents get shot. He sees that and takes on that guilt in a way. I thought, ‘Oh, I know how to write a story from there.’"

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

Hearing the score in Dolby 7.1 Atmos (I believe), was one of the most epic (perfect word for it) audio atmospheres I've ever heard in a theater.

Fantastic music throughout the trilogy mr. Zimmer!!!!!! I'm deeply in love with it.
I'm very excited to hear his MOS score, it's going to be very different from Batman, that's for sure.

CHANT was Awesome!!
Really had a heft & thematic influence!

I loved the fact that HANS has given every main character a theme!
BATMAN, BANE & CATWOMAN & even in previous films!
Along with just an incredible soundtrack!

QUESTION!

When you had the Cop Vs Bane Thugs street battle and the camera was going back and forth between them was the music saying GOTHAM...BANE.....GOTHAM....BANE. It seemed the chant was showing both sides of the spectrum? I could be imagining it but it really seemed that way. Ideas? I could pull the soundtrack I'm sure, was just seeing ya'lls perspective.

I sorry i have to disagree with you blind Zimmer nuts. The music and that damn chant drowned out a lot of dialog to me. I don't know who did the sound edit on the movie but they did a bad job. I'm not the only one to say this. I had several friends that saw it in different theatres and said the same thing. This was the weakest of three movies as for soundtrack. This is leaving me more an more fearful for Man of Steel.
