Following the massive success of his recent biopic, Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan is staying at Universal for his next project, which has now officially set a July 17, 2026 release date.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but Matt Damon - who previously worked with Nolan on Oppenheimer and Interstellar - is reportedly in talks to play the lead role.

The studio is being incredibly secretive about this untitled film, and the trades can't even get a straight answer about which genre it falls into.

With a few notable exceptions (Oppenheimer, Memento, Dunkirk), Nolan does tend to favor sci-fi based fare, but he did recently express interest in putting his stamp on the horror genre during a conversation with the British Film Institute (via THR).

“I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices,” he said. “It’s really about [provoking] a visceral response to things. So at some point, I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea — and those are few and far between. So I haven’t found the story that lends itself to that. But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where — the studios make a lot of these films — and they’re films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting into films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.”

Nolan's films do tend to be quite dark, and he has incorporated horror elements in a few of his previous movies, including Batman Begins, The Prestige, and even Oppenheimer.

“Certainly Oppenheimer has elements of horror — which I definitely think is appropriate for the subject matter,” he added. "The middle of the film is very heavily based on the heist genre, and the third act of the film is the courtroom drama. And the reason I settled on those two genres for those sections is they are mainstream genres in which dialogue and people talking is inherently tense and interesting to an audience. That’s the fun thing with genre — you get to play with a lot of different areas whereas in different type of film you really wouldn’t be allowed to.”

There had been a lot of speculation about where Nolan's next feature would end up after the filmmaker expressed an openness to doing business with Warner Bros. again after his public falling out with the studio back in 2021. Nolan took issue with WB's decision to shift its entire 2021 film slate to HBO Max.

"Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service," the director said in a statement at the time.

We'll be sure to keep you updated as more info on this mysterious movie filters through. For now, let us know what type of film you'd like to see Nolan tackle next in the comments section down below.

@harryba11zack - well Nolan probably is the only modern director who could ice skate up hill

Whatever this movie is about (JFK?), I'm sure Nolan is gonna play around with time again. Hopefully this time it's just straightforward without any unchronological plotlines movies at different speeds though

@bkmeijer1 - He really likes non-linear storytelling doesn’t he? I really enjoyed Oppenheimer but sometimes the jumps were jarring, like when it kept going back to his investigation.

But I’m always down for a Nolan movie. Even the ones I don’t enjoy much - like Tenet - are still always worth an IMAX watch at minimum.

I hope he does a Western or something with a Western aesthetic (could be set in a non-old West setting but have the structure of a Western).

@bkmeijer1 - I'm sure whatever it's about there will be a line around the corner here to fellate him and say it's better than whatever movie it's released against.

@bkmeijer1 - this is my biggest gripe with his movies. It was cool with inception and interstellar but Dunkirk and on it just gets tiring. Not every single movie you make has to be a puzzle. I get that it's his thing but it's just the same trope with a different facade each time.

@Antitrollpatrol - I get yah but certain directors have their thing or themes they tackle frequently so time is his it seems or one of them.

As long as it’s done fresh then I don’t mind but I do wonder what like a simple straightforward Nolan rom com would be like lol?

TheVisionary25 - 10/9/2024, 10:20 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I doubt it

That is his forte but it would be nice if it’s straightforward just for the sake of freshness
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/9/2024, 11:14 AM
@TheVisionary25 - well he did do it once before with The Prestige, which I still think is his best movie

@bkmeijer1 - wasn’t that still non chronological too?.

Maybe not as much as others but still think it had his moments if that

It’s probably my favorite of his Non Batman films too still

I love Nolan, but his last few films have become bloated and messy imo.
I would love to see him go back to making smaller mind[frick]ery suspense films like Memento. I also think he'd be great directing a horror/suspense film.

@TheJok3r -

They have a whole lot of stupid going. Every time it looks like they are doing something right over the last few years, they step on their collective d!cks.

That's why Gunn's role has me worried. I think Superman might be excellent. But then he may drop a bunch of more obscure stuff that the general audience isn't so interested in. Like the GotG movies were hits, but his Suicide Squad wasn't.

TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/9/2024, 12:14 PM
@DocSpock - Gunn and his team are doing nothing different from what the previous leadership did with the DCEU: Announce random projects that have nothing to do with one another, with none of them having a chance of ever seeing the light of day. The latest is that a Bane and Deathstroke team up movie is happening, because of course it will.

I didn't dislike Oppenheimer. But wasn't a fan. It's a one-and-done movie. Unlike Interstellar, Dunkirk or DK2 or 3, which i can watch over and over.
mountainman
mountainman - 10/9/2024, 10:26 AM
@GeneralZod - It’s more or less a historical drama, which generally isn’t a movie category that typically warrants regular repeat views.

Personally I did enjoy it a lot, but have only seen it once. I’m sure I’ll watch it a second time long before I ever watch Tenet a second time.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 10/9/2024, 11:01 AM
@mountainman - Dunkirk is historical (quite accurate, i might add) but gripping tension from start to finish. I appreciate Oppenheimer was more about the man and his character, but i was surprised there wasn't a full sequence of Fat Boy getting loaded on to the Enola Gay, and the flight by Major Tibbets and his crew to Hiroshima, dropping the bomb, leaving the mushroom cloud, showing people on the ground being burned alive, etc. Nolan would have made that look epic and horrific and been cause enough for repeat views.
mountainman
mountainman - 10/9/2024, 11:11 AM
@GeneralZod - Personally I’d prefer to not watch a city of innocent men, women and children get vaporized. I think the decision to not show the bomb being dropped was a smart one.

Oppenheimer regretted building the bomb and the death it caused. I think now as we are closer to nuclear war than we have been since the 1960’s, we can all appreciate that message.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 10/9/2024, 11:29 AM
@mountainman - While I don't think the adult civilian victims of Hiroshima or Nagasaki (or the adult civilian victims of other Japanese cities that were fire-bombed far worse than H or N) were wholly innocent -- they were beholden to their Emperor who put them in that position (ultimately he supported the hawkish Army's push to attack the United States), and they would have died to the last man/woman to defend their Emperor had he not surrendered -- I think Nolan should have showed the devastation and suffering, because it teaches younger people (who have no connection to WWII or the Cold War) how horrific nuclear attacks are and it gets a healthy debate going (should the US have dropped the bomb/should it not have). Fwiw, i don't think younger people truly appreciate that we are as close to nuclear war today as we were in 1962. A dramatized devastation has a very powerful and long-lasting teaching effect. Much like, for example, Schindler's List or the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan.

I'm gonna call my shot here since it doesn't say it's going to be an original movie. Nolan met with Barbara Broccoli a year ago, in the past he has said how he'd like to be the guy to start the James Bond franchise. But then again Amazon technically owns the rights.. just do it

Nolan pretty much walks on water. He has been by far the best director of his generation. Over the last 20 years, he has managed to repeatedly make great cinema which were usually also big box office hits. Sh!tty Tenet is his only real misstep. And he's young enough to rule the industry for another 15 years.

How great would it be if he eventually does 1 or more Bond movies? I think the best is still to come for Mr. Nolan.

Cool!!.

Oppenheimer was the start of a hopeful return to form for me in regards to Nolan since I liked it , especially after films like Dunkirk or Tenet that didn’t really click much for me so hopefully this continues that.

Nolan doing a horror film would be interesting but I kinda want to see him tackle genres outside of his wheelhouse more like romance or comedy , maybe even fantasy or a western?.

Anyway we’ll see , I am a fan of his and Damon’s so I’ll keep my eye out for this!!.

Earlier this year there was a rumor Nolan was eyeing a remake of the 60s TV series The Prisoner, but one would think he'd go with a British actor for the lead instead of someone like Damon. Guess we'll see.

@DanielPlainviewsGhost - Nolan has been rotating between sci-fi and realism, so with Oppenheimer being a real story, I expect something more Sci-Fi this time around.
