THE BATMAN Producer Dylan Clark Reveals Whether Sequel Will Move Beyond "Year Two" Setting (Exclusive)

The Batman is a very specific "Year Two" story for Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader, but will the planned sequel remain in that period or jump ahead in time? Here's what producer Dylan Clark told us...

From the very beginning, The Batman has been billed as a "Year Two" story. That's a significant departure from previous movies, which have either retold Bruce Wayne's all-too-familiar origin story or jumped straight into the Caped Crusader being an experienced crimefighter in Gotham City.

With talks about a sequel already taking place at Warner Bros. (news that surprised no one when two HBO Max TV shows are already in the works), we can't help but wonder whether those follow-ups will remain in this "Year Two" period or skip ahead in time. Both options have strong storytelling potential, and we asked producer Dylan Clark about that possibility during this week's UK junket for The Batman.

"I think it’s always about, ‘Where is Bruce emotionally?’ and where you want to pick up with him," Clark tells us in the video below. "We didn’t want to do an origin story with this. We didn’t want to see him as a Batman who had perfected his Batman ways. We wanted to see him grappling with what that meant. I think we earned the arc at the end of the day."

"So, it’s a little bit premature [but] we’re really focused on getting this movie seen on the big screen by as many people around the globe and they’ll hopefully all say very loudly that they want more," he continued. "Then, all of the ideas that have been percolating in our heads - you know, ‘wouldn’t it be cool if…?’ - we can start to put on paper and kind of land."

However, Clark then concluded by teasing that the next movie will indeed move past The Batman's setting. "I can’t say if it will...I suspect it would go a little bit further than Year Two."

Whether it's "Year Three" or even further into this Batman's vigilante career, potential leaps forward in time mean we could be looking at a trilogy that follows his mission to save Gotham City during very specific periods in his life. This has the potential to explore the Dark Knight in a way no previous movie has, and we just hope Pattinson and Reeves are all in on this journey for the foreseeable future.

@dracula - What’s up my guy? You might have my answer. Did Matt Reeves say that they scrapped the Arkham scene with Barry K?

Should do 4 movies

1.Riddler
2.Mr.Freeze
3.Joker (Its Batman’s greatest villain, there is a 1% chance of him not getting a movie)
4.Court Of Owls

@dracula - I like the idea of Mr. Freeze next, but after that I wanna see Hush and the Court of Owls in the movie after.

As for the Joker, I think it would be fun if he gets a show where he leads all the villains in an Arkham breakout. Kinda like in the first Lego Batman game

As long as we get a new batsuit, I don't mind. But all this talk about sequels already? As the man said.. let's focus on this one first. People be eating too much... And Fvuk Putin!

I would like to see the cave be decked out a little bit better the next time we see it. Looks bare minimum as it is right now

Wouldn't mind it if they jumped a few years and Batman has caught some villains in the meantime. Same between the second and third movie, as I hope to see a tv show focused on an Arkham breakout one day (if they're making villains shows anyway)

I mean as long as we see some kinda growth the character I don't think it matters as much where things pick up.

Lol the entire trilogy is already written. Reeves didn't spend nearly 2 years and change just drafting one movie.

@sully - He absolutely could have, especially considering that he was originally hired to work on this movie when it was a Ben Affleck solo film

Needy ass fan I am. But a trilogy should not be the limit for a series or character like Batman with such a rich gallery of rogues and characters and story opportunities. Ideally, 5 film continuity would be perfect. Like the Craig-Bond films or Connery-Bond films. I’d personally love to see:
Mr. Freeze, Harvey Dent’s fall to Two-Face, Joker, Hugo Strange, Anarky, professor Pyg, Scarecrow, and Court of Owls in a series. With Batman getting the opportunity to have a second confrontation with the Joker in the last film.

@VicSage -

I actually agree with this

I'm really shocked at how this thing is selling. I'm looking at my theaters and they have almost all seats available. I thought this Thang would've been selling like crazy but I think word of mouth will be everything for it.

@MyCoolYoung - I'm actually not. This is movie has a huge split fan base. Most people on here seem excited for it. But if you go elsewhere, especially Facebook, there are a LOT of people that don't like the look or casting for this movie. Even my mom, who doesn't care about superhero movies but loves Batman, has zero interest in this. My buddy who has owned a comic shop for 23 years thinks this looks absolutely terrible.

So yeah, this isn't surprising to me at all. I'm really excited for it, but like you said, if this succeeds then it will be through word of mouth.

@CorndogBurglar - the 3 hour run tike can't be helping either. I'm recovering from an achilles tear so sitting for 3 hours then walking again will be hell. It was different for me seeing No Way Home because I was on crutches and a walking boot now I'm not and this thing gets stiff as hell so we'll see.

They can stay in Year Two as long as they need to. Detective Conan has taken 28 years to go 250 days.

Personally I would like to see them hold off on the Joker and slowly build up to him over the course of a couple of movies. Like he's the criminal mastermind secretly behind these other villains, pulling the strings. That's a side of the Joker that we haven't really seen in film yet. Plus it would help to continue the "world's greatest detective" motif. In each one of these movies as they progress Batman finds little clues, hints that there's someone (or something larger) behind the scenes. To incorporate some of the above ideas, yeah it could involve a breakout of Arkham, or something else along those lines. Now you could replace the Joker with the Court of Owls as the shady organization behind it all. Or even have it seem like the movies are building toward the Joker being the mastermind, but at the end of whatever movie that is (3rd maybe?) it's revealed that actually it was someone else secretly controlling the Joker (i.e. the Court of Owls), and to them the Joker is just an agent of chaos, despite how clever he thinks he is. Anyhow, I'm just spitballing here, but I would like to see a build up of tension and suspense with these movies, like they are building toward something or someone, as opposed to the "villain of the week" approach. Kind of like how they did with the most recent Bond series. But keeping with that feeling of intrigue an mystery the whole time which warrants the "world's greatest detective" moniker.

Hopefully future Batman movies will focus on characters we haven't seen on the big screen.

So give me Manbat, Clayface, Professor Pyg, Killer Moth, Catman, Hugo Strange, Mad Hatter, Hush, Solomon Grondy and Lady Shiva, just to name a few.
