While promoting The Martian at TIFF this week, Ben Affleck's longtime friend Matt Damon weighed in on his former Good Will Hunting co-star's role in Batman v Superman: Dawn On Of Justice. In addition to sparking some hilarious online debates with his 'Bourne vs. Batman' comments, Damon also gave an insight into Affleck's thought process when he was offered the part.
Speaking to MTV, Damon explained how Affleck consulted with him over the phone after he was offered the role. "I talked to [Ben] about it. It was a big decision," he claimed. "He knew what the stakes were. Once he was able to get Chris Terrio to write the script, I think that made the decision for him. Chris is a fantastic writer and Ben really liked Zack [Snyder], who’s directing, and it was like, ’well, I’ve got all the pieces that are necessary."
Affleck was announced as Batman a whole four months before Terrio was brought in as a screenwriter. At the time, it appeared as if the actor had been the one who convinced his Oscar-winning Argo scribe to join him. However, from the sound of Damon's comments, perhaps they both had a hand in convincing each other to commit to the DCEU. Additionally, it seems like Affleck's admiration for fellow director Snyder played a role in his decision too.
Can this talented creative trinity help drive Batman v Superman to critical and commercial success? We'll find out soon enough when the movie hits theatres March 25, 2016.
