FAN-ticising: 3 Reasons For Superman's exile In Batman vs Superman

In this editorial we're going to examine the only 3 reasons I think are acceptable for why we might see Superman in exile at some point during Batman vs Superman

With all the recent big news surrounding Batman vs Superman, I thought now would be a good time to do an editorial on some of the information that’s been floating around lately. For this editorial I’m going to focus on one of the more (supposed) plot points that’s been rumored for a while now. Quite a few sites have been reporting that at some point in Batman vs Superman, we’ll see Superman sporting his full beard yet, while in exile, yet again. The question I want an answer to is “Why?”

To me the idea of putting Superman in exile isn't a step forward, it’s a step backwards. I understand that Superman has gone into exile a few times over the years in the comics, but this is the movie universe. It seems pointless to put Superman back into exile, when we've already seen him in exile for pretty much the first half of Man of Steel. It seems like a strange decision to put him right back where he started. For a sequel anyway, if they’re going to do it, they should at least wait until the 3rd MOS to do so, it just seems repetitive.

Enough of my personal rant, let’s move on to the meat of this editorial. I’m going to give you guys 3 explanations for why/how Supes ends up in exile.

1. This one is kind of obvious and more than likely the route they’ll take. He does it to himself!

At the end of Man of Steel we see the big blue boy scout snap Zod’s neck, killing him. This is a big deal because, Zod is, whether Superman likes it or not, a Kryptonian, he and Superman are essentially the last of their kind, so I wouldn't imagine it’s an easy decision to make, not only killing someone, but effectively wiping out your own species, sacrificing any chance your species had of living on, just to save another. We see Superman’s reaction to what he’s done immediately after, he’s devastated, as the viewer we can tell this was a traumatic experience for him and one that could POSSIBLY, lead him to put up his cape, and go into exile. We already get the sense in the beginning of the MOS that Superman is already a little unsure of himself, of his powers and the things he can do, maybe being forced to kill Zod is the push that makes Superman, stop being Superman.

2. In my opinion, this option is just as likely as the first. Lex Luthor puts him there!

Yes, I think it’s a strong possibility that Superman goes into exile, as a result of the actions of the devious, and villainous, Mark Zuckerberg!! I mean Lex Luthor!!!
As we all know, Lex isn't exactly a physical match for Superman, assuming that in this film at least, Lex won't have his battle armor. So how can a super villain, with no superpowers at all, defeat someone with god-like abilities? With good ‘ol fashioned power, and public influence. Perhaps after the events of MOS, Lex Luthor takes it upon himself to mentally destroy Superman, and basically run him out of town. He uses his public influence to basically convince the city, or the entire world, that Superman is bad news, that in the grand scheme of things, he’s no different than Zod. I mean look at all the destruction he caused. Yes all that destruction was a result of Superman saving the entire planet, but look at the bigger picture here, the entire world has seen was Superman is CAPABLE of. They don’t know Superman, sure they know he “supposedly” stands for truth, justice, and all that other crap, but why would they trust him? Everyone is already going to be a little on edge after the events of MOS, and I think all it would take is one perfectly executed push, from our dear friend Lex Luthor, to push the people of Earth into pure hatred for Superman, or fear. Of course the main flaw with this route is the "Why?". What reason would Lex have for having such hatred for Superman?

3. The 3rd, and admittedly least likely scenario. Because he’s dead!!

Wait, what? Yes, because Superman, is, dead. This one might be reaching a little bit, but IMO it’s the coolest of the 3 options so for that reason alone I left it on the list.

How? You might ask. Simple, I refer you to one specific story arc. The Death of Superman.
That’s right, I’m implying Doomsday, the tough as nails, unstoppable, vicious killing machine, could possibly show up to put good ‘ol Supes 6 feet under. Admittedly any evidence I have to support this theory is flimsy and flawed at best.

I refer you to this hidden message from the MOS blu-ray.

Seems like an odd easter-egg to place on the blu-ray if they didn’t plan on bringing Doomsday into the story in some fashion right? Now I’m not saying they're going to adapt the full story line and we’ll see a bunch of different Supermen popping up throughout the movie. But I am saying that it’s entirely possibly, that they’re going to adapt the actual killing, and resurrection of Superman. You'll remember that Superman was alive for quite some time before he actually made his return into the world. This battle with Doomsday could also be the reason as to why so many Justice League members are RUMORED to be making an appearance. In the end however, I’ll admit, this 3rd theory is flawed and there isn’t much evidence to support it, but I thought it was a cool idea so I figured I’d share it with you guys.

___________________________________________________________________________

So there you have it, those are my 3 ideas for why/how Superman could possibly end up in exile during Batman vs Superman. Keep in mind that as of right now, the whole exile thing is nothing more than a rumor, and might not end up happening at all. Which personally I would prefer because as I stated in the beginning, it seems slightly repetitive.

It's too early for Doomsday to appear; if they were going to incorporate the story into the movie, they would do so only if Superman was truly loved or respected by the public. At the end of MoS, only the army knew of his identity as Superman and the rest of Metropolis knew him as a blur that helped to destroy their city.

Like with what SotoJuiceMan said, we'll probably see him appear around Justice League 2, somewhere in Phase 2.

maybe superman is in exile because of the damage he & zod caused in man of steel.

@ ALmight

That idea was supposedly only in Goyer's original script, and after that was revealed, the people from Argo have been brought in to revise it. So hopefully we'll not see Synder go against the comic's roots and have Batman working for the government and meddling in politics - The character just doesn't do that. It's Goyer's weak attempt to make the film seem more similar to the Avengers.

Hopefully Superman's 'exile' will either be his own self-imposed exile, or someone like Luthor or Batman just temporarily threaten him to stay out of Metropolis, but he ends up returning by the end of the film. I can see it being Batman if the TDKR speech of "I want you to stay out of my way...." is used.

Ok, let's remember that this supposed "exile" is just a rumor. I don't see it happening, unless maybe he does it as a ruse for some reason, like trying to show Luthor's true intentions by taking away the "threat" that Luthor keeps trying to push. (Something like this. Luthor is trying to make Superman into a threat and so is trying to get the army to help him counteract Superman with Metallo, or he is even running for president on the idea of protection from aliens. So Superman goes into "exile" in order to remove that justification for Luthor's actions and prove that Luthor really just wants to take over.)

I certainly hope they NEVER use the stupid comic book story about the "death" of Superman. Come up with original stories, don't just copy from comics. As far as I know, the story in Avengers was original, and it was great. Luthor actually being elected president is even dumber. Running is fine, but he should lose in the end. I have never understood making the ultimate villain into the president. (Although, considering that Obama conned people into voting for him, I guess it is plausible. Lol)

My theory is Henry Cavill hadn't shaved that day because he wasn't filming yet.

Long shot, I know. (rolls eyes)

I don't think him being in exile makes any sense. At the end of Man of Steel, did he seem like he was ready to exile himself? He seemed pretty pumped up to get a job at the Daily Planet and "keep his ear to the ground" to help people as Superman.

I would like to see some version of Bizarro before Doomsday, he could just be a clone of Superman but the embryo that was created grew at an astounding rate and was warped due to Superman's cells holding the codex.

If they do adapt Doomsday he should be reminiscent of Max Landis' comic idea where he can easily destroy Superman physical, he should be like a Godzilla who can just annihilate anything in it's wake and be a force of nature. Of course that is what I'd like for the third movie.

Man of Steel 2 should be similar to Trinity where Wonder Woman appears because Themyscira is threatened and Lex Luthor has Bizarro. Except instead of Ra's Al Ghul it would be Lex.

Man of Steel 3
Luthor truly hates Superman now and his men discover a Kryptonian artifact on earth, Luthor accidentally releases Brainiac to the world. Brainiac takes host of Luthor's body and builds an exo-suit to make himself strong enough to fight Superman. Brainiac then unleashes Doomsday, an ancient Kryptonian secret weapon created from a fusion of a miniature version of the codex aboard a science vessel.

@Praetorian
the whole "Clone" part of bizarro would seem stupid in this universe when you have those breeding chambers that pop out kryptonian babies.

Better origin angle in THIS universe for bizarro is that lex gets his hands on kryptonian tech (that's somewhat damaged) and he fixes it so it can create a kryptonian.

it works, and creates a kyrptonian baby, but it wasn't 100% so the baby grows up to be weird looking and twisted.

This solves 2 issues.
1) Lex doesn't need to get his hands on Superman's blood (which would be hard to do)
2) you wont need to have Cavill playing 2 roles. you could basically get any actor for Bizarro because he doesn't need to be a superman clone, but rather a kryptonian.

a story angle they could go with is Luthor Runs and eventually becomes president mid-movie while Bizarro and Superman fight each other and superman tries to avoid more casualties.

Superman knows Luthor created Bizarro but he cant prove it to the public.
this is where Batman comes in and investigates luthor.

Batman finds video footage of luthor testing the kryptonian chamber, and it shows a young version of bizarro.

Batman gets the evidence to superman and superman proceeds to destroy/confiscate everything kryptonian in lex's possession.

Then superman has to explain to the public that bizarro was a creation of lex despite bizarro being kryptonian.

He does this through an article publication written and published by Louis Lane and Clark Kent.

Good article and interesting theories and speculation. I dont think we'll see Doomsday soon but there may be more references in Man of Steel 2 or Justice League. I think Lex Luthor becoming a complete mystery and having him be behind the shadows manipulating those around him and the public to convince people to alienate "Superman" and force him to be a threat by referencing "Zod" and the other Kryptonians that attacked Earth and almost destroyed Metropolis.

I get what your saying, but the most obvious reason would be he has no secret identity.

If Lois could figure how to find him, than the worlds 2most intelligent people would solve it instantly. Specially after Lois visited Smallville & it was attacked. How they get past that I can't wait to see. It would Clark to live in exile, to have peace added with the paranoia from the government & perhaps public at large.

Batman would investigate Lexcorp & see them using Kryptonian tech, considering Superman involved & that maybe he needs to stop them. He realizes Clarks innocence but soon they face both Corvin & Bizarro, master minded by Lex. Wonder women makes her entrance as Steve Trevor works for the government & they would be dragged into events due to her trying to build bridges between her people & the rest of the world.

Specially when Metallo & Bizarro go berserk & are too much of a physical threat to Superman.

Which brings me to something I'd love to see, Superman beaten towards an inch of his life. First by Batman, due to out strategist him, making him doubt himself. Then by the 2big bad with combo of kryptonite. Batman saves him & we have a training montage ala Landis idea. This is also how they find common ground in their similarities & common enemies. Its a great idea & when they return to Metropolis no in chaos after those too loose control, we have a Superman more in tune with his comic book character & the bond firmly established between the big 3. As you know WW would try & stop those 2by herself.

My thought.
