Christopher Nolan's
The Dark Knight remains the most highly-decorated film based on a superhero, to date. There was, however, one substantial award that evaded the movie
that Nolan believes won't escape the claws of Marvel Studios' recent critical and financial phenomenon,
Black Panther.
Deadline spoke with Nolan at the Governors Ball after-party for this year's Academy Awards. Deadline doesn't quote Nolan directly but they do disclose that he predicted a Best Picture nomination for
Black Panther at next years Oscars ceremony - and with Disney reportedly planning to campaign for
Black Panther (and the upcoming
Mary Poppins Returns) come award season, there's certainly a chance.
With the release of
The Dark Knight, Nolan kickstarted the notion that superhero movies could be seen as more than just the popcorn-blockbusters they were always thought to be, which is why many believed the movie's exlusion from 2009's Best Picture category seemed absurd. This lead to the following year's ceremony nominating 10 films rather than 5. Still, the more prestigious awards have eluded the genre, with Heath Ledger's Best Supporting Actor win for his performance in
The Dark Knight being a notable exception.
Michael B. Jordan, who plays
Black Panther's acclaimed antagonist, has
previously stated that he drew inspiration from Ledger's iteration of The Joker, so perhaps Jordan may have a chance at Best Supporting Actor.
Do you think
Black Panther is Oscar-worthy? Which awards do you think it would be eligible for? What deserving superhero movie do you think the Oscars has snubbed in the past?
