BLACK WIDOW Star Scarlett Johansson Teases A "Tonal Shift" From What We're Used To Seeing In The MCU

We recently found out that Black Widow had been pushed back from its original release date due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and while we have been assured that the Cate Shortland-directed film will hit theaters at some point, we haven't been given any indication of when that might be.

For now, marketing and promotion for the movie continues, and we have some new quotes from star Scarlett Johansson from her recent interview with Total Film.

We have previously heard that Black Widow will focus on the family dynamic between Natasha Romanoff and her former Red Room associates, but here the Academy Award-nominated actress teases a shift in tone from the type of movies we're used to seeing in the MCU.

“I think part of Kevin Feige’s genius is that he always thinks about what fans expect out of these films and then gives them something that they never could’ve dreamed of,” says Johansson. “The idea of Natasha Romanoff in a family drama is the least expected thing, and I had to wrap my head around what that was going to be because there’s such a big tonal shift.”

The action-heavy trailers for the movie haven't really reflected this, but we look forward to discovering Black Widow's secrets when it does eventually find its way to the big screen.

Check out Total Film's newsstand cover below, and let us know when you think the film is likely to be released.

Must suck for Nat/Black Widow fans that asked for this for years only to have it delayed.

Hope it all works out in the end. Actually looking forward to this one since the last trailer.

@Necropolitan - Eh, I'm ok with a delay. It's still coming and I've got plenty to keep me entertained until it does. Perhaps this gives more time to polish effects.

Speaking of shifts, I’m not sure how I feel about this one.... quite liked the first though.

@Chewtoy - hope this is good. I feel like the first was such a great one off.

@Chewtoy - Looks like an over-the-top martial arts action movie drowning in copious amounts of gore.

Never would’ve expected the family drama genre to be part of the MCU (not yet anyway- some of you probably know what I’m talking about), but combined with the spy action thriller we’ve been expecting, this is going to be something really special.

To be fair, with how sparsely she's used in the movies any tone is a tonal shift.

Yesterday would have started the one month countdown to the movie hitting theaters

Marvel movies with a different tone? Hahahaha, I get it. Happy April Fool's Day, guys.

@Spock0Clock - Hey now. Captain America Winter Soldier had a totally different tone all its own. It actually felt like a serious action/espionage type film, and was a LOT less light-hearted than all the others

But other than that.......you're right. Sadly.

it'll have the same tone as 90% of MCU movies.

@kazuma - This is my thing about Marvel. They attempt different tones, they dabble, flirt with them, but at the end of the day, a lot of them feel the same. Now I know, the Russos are probably the best at varying tones starting with the best, The Winter Soldier. Infinity War is probably the ballsiest they've been, and that felt different. But aside from that, across the board they feel similar in tone.

@SmokingMan - I think marvel strikes a good balance. They shift it ever so slightly so every movie is different but they keep the consistency
