TOP GUN: MARVERICK Isn't Heading To Streaming; Disney Still Not Considering Disney+ Release For BLACK WIDOW

Despite reports to the contrary, it doesn't sound like Top Gun: Maverick or Black Widow are destined for streaming releases over the coming months, with plans still in place to debut them theatrically...

With so much uncertainty surrounding the reopening of theaters in 2021, it's no wonder studios are unsure how to proceed. Warner Bros. made a ballsy move when they confirmed that its entire 2021 slate will release in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously, but rivals are taking a wait-and-see approach.

As one financier tells The Hollywood Reporter, releasing movies while theaters are closed is "great for headlines, but not for the bottom line." They use the poor performance of Wonder Woman 1984 as an example, noting: "The major studios have realized there is no point in trying to release their product right now."

Recently, it's been reported that Black Widow could end up heading to Disney+'s "Premier Access" service in May, but insiders insist that there are still no plans for anything other than a big screen release.

Paramount Pictures has also refuted rumours that Top Gun: Maverick could jet on to a streaming service in a big money deal. "We have no plans to move our theatrical release of Top Gun," Paramount president of distribution Chris Aronson confirms. "I think the next two months are critical, and whether the new administration can implement a robust vaccination plan. If Biden’s 100 million vaccines in 100 days works, then I think we’ll be in good shape."

It seems the future of moviegoing hinges on those vaccinations, because if life doesn't start returning to normal over the coming months, there may not be any theaters left to screen movies in.

Wasnt it said that Wonder Woman 1984 did really well and it brought up subscription numbers a lot

@dracula - I read that as great for subscription numbers (long term promises really... people can cancel anytime) but bad for immediate gains (seats in butts)

@dracula - As a streaming movie it did well.

As a theatrical movie it did very, very badly.

It probably didn’t help that ww84 was an atrocious movie to use as a template. The numbers off a huge movie that everyone loves is probably a better way to go.I think if they put black widow on Disney plus, whoever doesn’t have it already is gonna get it even if it’s on a temporary basis.

I really hope they keep holding these major movies back for theatrical openings. Sooner or later, hopefully sooner, things will get back to the point where everyone will be safe enough to go out and congregate as we did pre-last March. With all these movies waiting in the pipeline, it will be a glorious time for actual going out to see a film. Nothing beats the theatrical experience no matter how good your TV is. It will also be a helluva time to invest in stocks such as AMC and Regal as well. The theaters will be packed and will remain so I have no doubt.

@Mugens - Agreed. I'm already pissed that I'm gonna have to miss Kong Vs. Godzilla on the big screen, having already seen the first three releases building up to it.
I'm not so bothered that I missed Tenet. It was apparently not very good.

But if The Eternals is released on the big screen during this pandemic? That would be a feat of inhuman willpower for me to stay at home and miss out on that.
That HAS to be seen on the biggest screen possible.
So I'd rather they wait.

@GwenLantern - Funny the wife and I were some of the very few who actually liked Tenet, even if we did have to watch it twice to get all the nuances. Certainly agree though, a film such as the Eternals must be seen on the big screen.
