Dwayne Johnson Promises That BLACK ADAM Is Happening Despite Warner Bros.' "Reconfiguration" Of The DCEU

Following comments from The Rock about Black Adam finally starting production at the end of 2019, the actor has now offered another update and weighs in on those behind the scenes changes at Warner Bros.

A lot of big changes have been happening at Warner Bros. after the disappointing critical and commercial performance of Justice League and one of the many projects which are seemingly in flux is Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson believes it could start shooting at the end of next year but Shazam! will have to be a success to help make it a reality and we've heard nothing from the studio as of yet.

"Black Adam is coming along," Johnson insisted in an interview for Skyscraper. "The script is coming along. I'm very happy with it. That's a project that obviously you want to take your time [with]."

"I think it's in a very exciting time now, with DC, because there's some rejiggering going on," he continued when asked what's happening at Warner Bros. "There's reconfiguration going on. There's looking at the macro map of the DC universe. And I know those guys are working diligently at DC and Warner Bros too, working closely with our producers too, to see how Black Adam unfolds in the universe. But yeah. I mean, I'm excited about it. It's just coming along and being written."

It is, of course, possible that Black Adam will happen but we thought the same thing about Nightwing and The Batman, two more DC Comics movies which appear to be stuck in development hell. For now, we'll just have to wait and see but be sure to stay tuned for updates as and when we have them.

Am I stupidly optimistic for saying, I think, WB/DC may be getting things on track? I wish they would come out with an official announcement but what's being worked on and what's on their slate, and which actors are staying or going, but generally speaking... I think they may be getting this right. MAY.

What I'm seeing with Aquaman, Shazam, Wonder Woman 1984 has me hopeful. Then, I remember all the nonsense about Batgirl, Birds of Prey, Gotham Sirens, Harley/Joker movie, Joker origin movie, Batman solo movie, Nightwing, Man of Steel 2, Flashpoint, etc. and I'm reminded they have no idea what to do with these films.

@VicSage -

It's possible that they could turn things around if they manage their universe properly and professionally. For starters, they need to reign in the directors doing their own thing and give scripts the proper time they need, instead of rushing just don't try to create a Marvel like universe unless you're patient and committed to the hard work and don't treat the audience like they're idiots by pretending what came before didn't happen and suddenly everyone loves Superman for example.

I'm not impressed with a large slate of films if the creators aren't doing them properly. I'd settle for three good DCEU films at this point.

@Humperdink - 1.) Not letting filmmakers do their own thing is precisely why DC Films is in the sorry state it's in. While "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman" deserved to make far more than they did, they still made a profit, and there are no more devoted fans than those of Snyder's DC Films. However, the most hated DC Films, even among DC Films fans, ("Trailer Park's "Suicide Squad" and Frankenstein's monster "Justice League" are those where the creator wasn't allowed to do their own thing. Forcing directors to adhere to a specific story, regardless of the character, leads to ultimately generic storytelling. Comic books aren't written that way, and Comic Book Movies shouldn't be either.

2.) The world loves Superman BECAUSE of what came before. After he made amends and was forgiven for the Black Zero event (they don't build a statue to someone who is partially responsible for the destruction of the midtown of a city otherwise, even if that person saved the world) he was loved for two years.

Then Superman failed to save, and was accused of killing, at least 20 people in Nairomi and the world turned against him. They said he had no right to use his abilities to help others and that his existence was doing more harm than good, but when he gave his life to save the world, doing precisely what they condemned him for, and when he was cleared of the murder of all those people, they loved him again.

That being said, not really even acknowledging why Superman is loved, and missed in "Justice League", was indeed a huge problem. The hero can't be who he is without looking back on how he got there. That's why his characterization was off in "Justice League".

Finally, we have three good DC Films ("Man of Steel", "Batman v Superman" and "Wonder Woman") but I would like far more. I agree with everything else you said though. Don't send a film into production until everyone is ready, and don't try to carbon copy Marvel, except for the films that have borrowed from DC (like "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Black Panther").

@SisterSunday52 - "While "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman" deserved to make far more than they did, they still made a profit"

...ACTUALLY not quite sure on this. BvS budget was $250. Turned 330 US of which it gets back $165. Turned $543 foreign of which it gets $179. Total made $344... if it was only the budget of $250 this had to go against then it would have made a profit of $94 million... but this does not include the advertising costs which likely exceeded $94 million... and so therefore made no profit unless DVD sales etc... made up for the rest. It might have broken even, it might have lost overall, hard to tell. But from the #s we have, it is at a loss. That may be why DC pulled Snyder from JL and not some other reason. He was well into it by the time the #s came in so they had no choice but to throw in someone with a better profit record in hopes of salvaging it. Unfortunately their meddling still led to an inferior product.

Anybody think there might be a release date change for Aquaman announced at Comic-Con? While I think it will win the weekend against the other movies in its slot, the competition is gonna be rough on it.
Pantherpool
Pantherpool - 7/11/2018, 4:39 AM
@Roodi - Now that Mary Poppins Returns moved from the 25th to the 19th, I could totally see one or two of the films scheduled for release on that weekend moving to early 2019. I don't know if Aquaman will be one of them though.

@Roodi - I definitely think they're moving the release date. I mean it'll be dumb for them not to.

Pantherpool

@Oskir - That would put it too close to Fantastic Beasts. If they move it, it will most likely be in 2019.

No matter where you move a film it's going to go up against something.
Frankly, I think people are overestimating the popularity of Mary Poppins.
I just don't think Millennials and Gen Z care about old school Nanny McPhee.

@Battabing - it's less the power of mary poppins as a brand and more the power of disney as a brand and marketing behemoth

I see no appeal in the live action remakes / sequels / whatnot outside of burton's dumbo. Cause burton + dumbo = several acid trips.

@ftf530 -

Well, it's not working for Pirates, and it didn't work for Alice 2 or Pete's Dragon. I don't know that it's working for the Christopher Robin film, either. I'm betting the audiences for Mary Poppins 2 will be older. I'm not convinced that younger audiences are all that invested in this particular property.

@Battabing - Do we count pirates on these slates? Cause I'm specifically talking about these remakes. Also didn't Alice 1 do well?

The X-Men Universe has long been winning the race for Most Non-Cohesive Comic Book Cinematic Universe, but judging by its ever-shifting slate of films, the DCEU is working to alienate fans and the general audience alike in its own unique way.
