BLACK PANTHER Star Daniel Kaluuya Shares His Thoughts On Chadwick Boseman Not Being Recast As T'Challa

Marvel has made it clear that Chadwick Boseman will not be replaced as T'Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, & Daniel Kaluuya (who played W'Kabi in Black Panther) has shared his take on that decision.

Marvel Studios has made the decision to retire the character of T'Challa from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while we don't know how he'll be written out of this shared world, the Black Panther mantle will be passed on to another character.

It feels like the best possible approach following Chadwick Boseman's tragic death, a sentiment Black Panther star Daniel Kaluuya agrees with.

"They retired him from the franchise. I respect that position, and I think that is out of respect for what that man gave to all of us, and what he stayed alive for all of us to experience," he says. "Quietly suffering and continuing to give through that suffering is a side of humanity you just don't see often."

As for how the character should be used in the MCU moving forward, Kaluuya feels that Marvel Studios' priority should be to honour Boseman, and his legacy, in some way.

"For me, what's important to me is not the Black Panther legacy, it's the legacy of Chadwick Boseman, because that's a human being and a spirit that is real. How can we honor that? Black Panther is going to do what Black Panther does, but that's a man that lived for us. He did it for us, did it for our nephews, our nieces, our kids. It's our duty to honor that man the way he honored us."

Rumours continue to persist about who will become the new Black Panther, but regardless of who wears the costume, there are definitely ways for Marvel Studios to ensure Boseman is remembered.

Black Panther II is still set to be released next July, so we should learn more soon. As for Kaluuya, it seems unlikely he'll return to the MCU after betraying T'Challa and aligning himself with Killmonger.

@Spike101 - yeah. Why can't we honor him AND still feature tchalla in future movies? This idea of us suffering (his words not mine) for someone's death is just idiotic. When I die I'd hate it if the people I loved avoided something they love to do "out of respect for me". Chadwick boseman clearly understood the importance of this character for the people of the world. Why do all these people think this is what he wanted?

@Origame - Spot in. He’d have wanted the character to live on and for everyone to enjoy the continuation of what he started. A fitting tribute to me is something shown with the film a bit like they did for Stan Lee and in the titles ‘In loving memory of Chadwick Boseman’ The whole world has gone mad with this sort of thing that I can’t even find the words to describe properly, it’s like there are a group of people that want to burden themselves up with sadness or hardship and then make a big deal out of it to everyone else expecting them to go along with it. Then if you don’t others will chastise you for it. Chadwick himself seems to have been a lovely guy who despite knowing he was on borrowed time wanted to enjoy life and bring happiness to others, like you say he would have wanted to see people deprived of this character in his memory.

@Spike101 - exactly. He was sick during much of his time working as black panther yet still did everything required for it. He potentially sacrificed time he knew was limited to do this role he knew people loved. Yet we're tossing it aside "out of respect for him".

@Origame - he didn't say one way or the other whether or not Black Panther should be re-cast. He said it's important to not get caught up in whether or not he should be recast, because it trivializes the man behind the character. Way to miss the point entirely.

@Spike101 - He gave black kids (and black adults) a hero they could see themselves reflected in. Chadwick brought BP to a global audience, who probably didn't know much about the character before that first movie.
He fought to keep an African accent for the character to prove African people are capable of great things without being "colonialized" by white Europeans. He was a leader, a superhero, a figure that represented the best of humanity and showed black kids that people who look like them can be heroes. Not just white guys names Chris. :P

"BP is going to do what BP does" meaning various people will continue to write for, draw, color, animate, and play him in media. Even after Chadwick's passing.

@Origame - I think T'Challa will continue to be a character in comics, books, games, animated shows, etc, and even movies eventually. I think the decision not to recast immediately respects the memory of this man while allowing for even more black characters to come more into the spotlight Chadwick helped shine.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 6:40 AM
@adamcawa - ...no. that is not what he's saying at all. He flat out said that we should be suffering for him out of respect for his legacy.
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 6:40 AM
@Origame - I don't feel it's being "tossed aside." It's being put gently on a shelf for a time, out of respect, so people can process his death, which maybe has hit people harder since there aren't many black heroes like BP. And in the meantime, T'Challa will continue to be a part of other media, I assume.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 6:42 AM
@blueancient - then don't make the movie. You wanna wait? Fine. But we're getting the news they won't recast RIGHT BEFORE announcing black panther 2. I can respect WAITING for a while, but they aren't. The franchise is continuing without the character.
adamcawa
adamcawa - 2/11/2021, 6:43 AM
@Origame - yeah... like... no. Just no. You really can't be that dense can you?
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 6:48 AM
@Origame - Which is actually best for the franchise. And just because T'Challa won't be in it *doesn't* mean there won't be a Black Panther in the sequel.
With the popularity of BP right now, Marvel has a massive massive audience that will come see the BP2 and be introduced to more black characters (or get more of the ones we love already) they may even end up loving MORE than T'Challa. The BP title will probably move to another character for a time, as often in the comics, and later on, when it's right, T'Challa can come back. There are many more characters that are badass in their own.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 6:49 AM
@adamcawa - "quietly suffering and continuing to give through that suffering is a sign of humanity you don't see often" directly in the article you claim to have read, from the guy you're saying didn't say that.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 6:52 AM
@blueancient - there's literally only one character it would make any sense to become black panther right now, and even then she's too young and the actress is unpopular at the moment.

And if you genuinely wanted to explore the other characters, then just call it wakanda chronicles or something like that.
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 6:56 AM
@Origame - That's in reference to what Chadwick did, not a suggestion of what we should do.
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 6:58 AM
@Origame - I mean, they may well do that. There very well could be a "colon" in the title after Black Panther, along the lines of "Black Panther: Wakanda ______." Lots of MCU movies have similar structured titles.

And there are more characters from the comics, not in BP movie, who could be introduced in the sequel.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 7:00 AM
@blueancient - that is your interpretation. My interpretation is different. Especially since this is right after talking about how this is out of respect for boseman.
adamcawa
adamcawa - 2/11/2021, 7:05 AM
@Origame - i read what he said. he's not saying "we should all quietly suffer like boseman did". he's saying we should respect boseman's contributions because he quietly suffered. he's saying there are more important things than who is playing a role in a movie. in a way he's saying we should all recast ourselves as T'Challa and be more willing to give to our fellow man.

you're the one that's misinterpreting his words, not me.
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 7:08 AM
@Origame - Just for my clarification, legit curious, do you mean your interpretation of that quote:

"I think that is out of respect for what that man gave to all of us, and what he stayed alive for all of us to experience. Quietly suffering and continuing to give through that suffering is a side of humanity you just don't see often."

Is *not* about a "side of humanity" shown by Chadwick "quietly suffering" while sick/dying and "continuing to give" by filming, working, and going to kid's hospitals and things like that?

Do you interpret that quote as Daniel saying *we* should show that side of humanity by quietly suffering and continuing to give?
Spike101
Spike101 - 2/11/2021, 7:19 AM
@blueancient - I think he did a really good job, like you say keeping the African accent was the right thing to do. I like all my Marvel characters portrayed as written in the comics and Chadwick did this brilliantly. You could just let yourself get sucked into the film and totally believe in him as a king. I do try to avoid the black and white handles though as I think it only helps to expand divisions rather than remove them.
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 7:38 AM
@Spike101 - Right on, I hear that. I think it can be easier to avoid the black and white handles if you *are* white. And I think Daniel, when he says:

"but that's a man that lived for us. He did it for us, did it for our nephews, our nieces, our kids. It's our duty to honor that man the way he honored us."

I think with those "us" and "our" he means black people especially. BUT you're right, it could just as easily mean all people. And in fact, it totally applies to all people.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 7:42 AM
@blueancient - so no black panther but they're sure still gonna use that name in the title to sell tickets.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 7:45 AM
@adamcawa - as I said before, that's your interpretation and here's mine. But even in your new interpretation that's not saying what you claimed about us not getting caught up in whether or not it should be recast. With what you said just now he's very much in favor of not recasting.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 7:47 AM
@blueancient - ...yes. what part of that is confusing to you? He never said anything about the kids in the hospital and you cut out the first sentence which delt with him believing the choice to not recast was respectful.
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 7:47 AM
@Origame - T'Challa wasn't the first nor the last Black Panther
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 7:49 AM
@blueancient - wasn't the first, yes. But he's currently the last to hold onto the role. You're misinterpreting the comics of when shuri assumed the role. He got it back.
bradranger
bradranger - 2/11/2021, 7:53 AM
@Origame - I'm not confused. The hospitals bit is just an example of Chadwick "continuing to give."

You're entitled to your interpretations. It's the filter through which you're interpreting that's concerning to me.

I hope, in time, you'll find you were mistaken here. You can have the last word, if you wish.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 7:56 AM
@blueancient - the filter being what was said and not what wasn't said.
Origame
Origame - 2/11/2021, 7:57 AM
@blueancient - also, really? Actually try arguing your point then instead of going "you're entitled to your opinion but you're wrong"

@Origame - you're entitled to your opinion but you're wrong

Honoring him by killing the character he gave new life.......

Ask yourself would Chadwick have wanted that?

Batman and superman and spiderman live on through many different actors

Black Panther can do the same
