Last month, we got the disappointing (but inevitable) news that Marvel had decided to postpone the theatrical release of Black Widow and push the movie into next year. The announcement pretty much brought an end to the marketing campaign, but we are still seeing some new promo material find its way online.

This latest still accompanies Marie's Claire's interview with stars Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, and gives us a new (well, a different angle of a previously released shot) look at their characters, as Natasha Romanoff prepares to speed into action on a motorcycle with Yelena Belova along for the ride.

Johansson also shared her thoughts on the movie being moved to mid-2021.

“I’d been talking to Kevin Feige”—the president of Marvel Studios—“about it, and our fellow producers, just trying to understand what the landscape was,” said the actress when asked about the delay. “We’re all eager to get the movie out, but more important than anything, everybody wants the experience to feel safe, to have people be able to really feel confident about sitting in an enclosed theater.”

Check out the new pic below along with some photos from Johansson and Pugh's Marie Claire shoot.

"In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger."

Black Widow also stars David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, O-T Fagbenle, William Hurt, Ray Winstone and Olivier Richters.

I do wonder how contracts are structured for everything surrounding releases, and who eats the loses that come from changing release dates. All merchandising, advertising, promotions... they’re all affected by a change in release date and not everything can be shifted or release with the same impact and cost at a later point.

Toy-wise, I’ve seen all of the Wonder Woman product in stores with no movie to support it, and I understand... it costs money to warehouse all of that, and the companies that produced all of it expected to have sales on the books this year, especially for Christmas.

James Bond lines up a ton of promotional partners... how flexible are they with release dates? Do those contracts just get voided by “acts of god”, or do they need to produce “No Time to Die” ads next year at a time when they’re not looking to push their own (now older) product?

And these magazines have spreads that were supposed to coincide with the height of interest in a film’s marketing campaign, thereby boosting their sales with these covers, but now the timing is all off.

So who is eating these expenses, and how long can they continue to do so?
