Blue Beetle is now playing in theaters, but if you go to the movie hoping for a glimpse at the new DCU...well, you may or may not get one.
Jaime Reyes' origin story is set in a DC Universe, but your guess is as good as ours when it comes to whether that's the DCEU or DCU. The movie plays intentionally vague, no great surprise when Blue Beetle is a DCEU title with a character who will eventually be featured in DC Studios' rebooted reality.
Blue Beetle doesn't feature any physical appearances from the Justice League, but some characters do get a mention. There's a Spanish-language news report that drops Bruce Wayne's name, while Jaime's uncle Rudy calls Batman a "fascist" in a moment which has already proven controversial among fans.
Also worth mentioning is the fact Jaime is a student at Gotham Law.
Despite director Angel Manuel Soto hinting his movie is tied to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, the only real nod we get to Superman is when the title character takes flight and is compared to the hero who can leap buildings in a single bound.
Finally, in a moment we can only assume someone thought would be a good idea before The Flash was released back in June, the Scarlet Speedster receives a nod when he's mentioned as Central City's protector.
We wouldn't necessarily take this as confirmation the Fastest Man Alive is part of the DCU. We're guessing when Blue Beetle does show up again, his origin story will be treated the same way Marvel Studios handled Hulk while shooting The Incredible Hulk or the difference between Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again.
In Blue Beetle, recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.
