BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Races Past IRON MAN 3 With $180M Haul; Nears $700 Million Worldwide
Civil War won't pass $200 million this weekend, but the Marvel movie has still exceeded expectations and even managed to beat one of the many records held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens...
Captain America: Civil War may not have had the biggest Marvel opening weekend of all-time (that honour still belongs to The Avengers), but with an estimated haul of over $180 million, the studio's first Phase 3 release managed to top Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the the fifth highest grossing Saturday of all-time. That mighty number also gives the movie the fifth highest opening weekend in North American box office history, as it has effortlessly passed Iron Man 3's impressive $174.1 million from back in 2013.
With $60 million on Saturday, Captain America: Civil War also topped Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $56.7 million, but make no mistake about it; Disney is very happy this weekend; The Jungle Book came in at #2, and as Exhibitor Relations senior analyst Jeff Bock tells The Wrap, "The only thing that’s going to hurt Disney is Disney itself. They’re going to run into themselves many times this year. That’s not gonna stop." That's not a bad position to be in, and the statistic below is also sure to put a smile on Bob Iger's face. Oh, and taking a dent out of Batman v Superman's earnings isn't enough for them, the fact that Civil War has nearly hit $700 million worldwide should also please Disney and Marvel!
