Elizabeth Olsen Reveals Why 'Scarlet Witch' Is CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR's "Wild Card"

Why didn't we see Scarlet Witch in that "Team Cap" and "Team Iron Man" Captain America: Civil War promo art a few weeks back? Well, Elizabeth Olsen weighs in on that here and shares some details on how the character's powers have developed since Avengers: Age of Ultron...

After the loss of her brother in Avengers: Age of Ultron, we last saw Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch joining Captain America's New Avengers team. We know she'll be "Team Cap" in Captain America: Civil War thanks to some leaked trailer screengrabs, and while the most likely explanation for her not being in the leaked promo art is because of licensing issues with Fox (who can also use the character in their X-Men movies), Olsen had a very different take on why that might be. "She’s OK. She’s doing alright. She’s confused, she’s conflicted. She’s found some people she thinks she connects with, but she’s doing alright. They released images of Team Cap and Team Iron Man. She wasn’t there. She’s always the wild card. I like being the wild card."

The wild card? There are those who believe that the Scarlet Witch may be at least partly responsible for whatever disaster kicks off the need for the Superhuman Registration Act in Captain America: Civil War, though Olsen could be subtly hinting that Wanda will end up switching teams. We'll just have to wait and see. As for how the character's powers will have advanced since we last saw her, Olsen confirmed that she's been working with Avengers: Age of Ultron movement coach Jennifer White to show that there's been some changes. "It’s not a new hand technique per say. We’re trying to grow her movement as a whole… Jenny and I have great pride in trying to make this a huge transformation — the next time we see her — of her abilities."

She was a great addition to age of Ultron. I look forward to seeing her character evolve.

Ok, first of all, the idea that she isn't in the promo art because of licensing issues is just stupid. If they can use her in the movies, the can use her on posters. More than likely it's just an attempt to keep everyone guessing.

Second, I cannot ever see her switching to Stark's team. But, I could see her pretending to switch. Maybe she will end up being the double agent.

Makes sense, he needs a female compadre now that Black Widow randomly sided against him (seriously, she'd probably be the most FOR not being governed).

Oh, and stop calling it the Registration Act. One thing that the Ant-Man credits scene made clear is that there will be "Accords," not a "Registration Act." My guess is that various countries sign these accords along with certain heroes. The Accords will allow those heroes to work in those countries without fear of prosecution or civil lawsuit, in exchange for following certain rules and/or government orders. One of the scenes from D23 had Cap telling Tony that Tony was only interested in "protection." So I think the Accords allow Team Tony to protect the world, while protecting themselves. And I bet a big reason Tony goes along is that it also protects Banner from being held responsible for damage done as Hulk. Cap just wants to help people, and after the Shield/Hydra incident no longer trusts governments enough to play by their rules. So he refuses to sign the Accords, feeling that every person has a self-evident right to help others and fight evil.

I'm really curious to see who she has bonded with. It was her and Quicksilver for so long. She could switch sides to be with the Vision.

I'm just wondering, I apologize in advance if this sounds biased, not trying to bash, really just asking a question,

In AOU, why would she send the Hulk to attack citizens of a city that your trying to save and help? Unless she didn't know what she was doing, but she seemed to have control and focus over her abilities

She was capable of brainwashing the Hulk and sending him out to murder innocent citizens and destroy a city.

And then, when she sees that Ultron is planning to kill more humans, somehow something clicks in her mind and says that this is bad? Unless, I'm totally missing something, and Ultron was controlling the twins with the scepter the whole time, but that wouldn't really make sense, because Scarlett Witch is able use her own morals after seeing Ultron's vision

In a lot of ways movie Scarlett Witch is just as bad as Stark was in his War profiteering days

@Tdi7457, yeah that doesn't make sense. My first instinct is that she is a double agent, not Wanda. I really can't see Wanda supporting Tony, although she might support Vision I guess. I would think that she is just Team Cap, and Marvel is just trying to be secretive. Or, maybe Wanda is a different double agent. Remember, Baron Zemo is involved too. Maybe Wanda, since she was given her powers by Hydra, pretends to join him to find out what he is doing. So while the Civil War is happening, Cap sends Wanda to infiltrate Zemo's group.

I after read this I want to see how strong she will become and how huge will be her impact in CW.

I don't think that was so much of an explanation of why she's a wild card as much as it was…actually I don't know what that was. She seems like she's not allowed to say anything, and doesn't know how to handle it.

The only reason I feel like they didn't do this, is because they are saving it for the Infinity Wars, Avengers vs Thanos, but

I really wish that we saw an Avengers and The Vision vs The Hulk (brainwashed by Scarlett Witch) and Ultron fight in AOU

And, then if there had to be a Quicksilver death, which there shouldn't have been, it would be because Quicksilver questioning his and Scarlett Witch's motives and which side they should be on during the fight. When Ultron heard this, Ultron would have killed Quicksilver, then Scarlett Witch would have totally turned on Ultron, at this point, Iron Man's suit would be uncompromised, allowing him, Scarlett Witch and Vision to help take down Ultron, the Hulk's spell would have been lifted and he would have jumped off into the distance

With Iron Man's armor compromised by Ultron, and full Avengers team vs The Hulk I think that would have been better and something different than the Avengers fighting the Chitauri or the Ultron Bots

And, they could have taken the fight to an open space, using Scarlett Witch's abilities, she could have made the Avengers feel as if there was a threat, and then when they got to the area where the battle was taking place, it would have been an enraged Hulk and Ultron.

This would fit into Ultron's plan too because after he defeated the Avengers, then he could take on the World, no problem

And, Olsen is awesome in the role, great casting

@DrHankPym, I think that just shows her growth during the film. Stark goes from arms developer to hero in one film, she goes from being willing to set the Hulk loose to realizing that Ultron is crazy and that saving people is more important than revenge.

True, I just felt like it could have been explained a little better, I really wish we could have seen Whedon's full vision for AOU

@Jeight

Not just the deleted scenes, although the Sokovia scene with the Twins should have been in the movie.

I don't feel like Whedon was even able to get to the filming stage for a lot of what he wanted to do in AOU due to conflicts with the studio

He's actually opened up about this in interviews

@DrHankPym She's a good Scarlet Witch and my only gripe is that her accent sucked in AoU so maybe it'll be better in CW. Aaron's accent was better.

Yeah, the mind stone connection between Scarlett Witch and The Vision may be the best thing about the mind stone being placed in Vision's forehead

I feel like there's way more to it than that, I don't see Joss as someone who would bite the hand that feeds, he has respect for Marvel, so I think he's trying to be extremely respectful in the interviews
Castiglione
Castiglione - 9/13/2015, 8:15 AM
@Jeight

Yeah, that's what I'm saying though, I think in his latest interviews, he's trying to do some damage control

Of course studios butt heads, I never said they didn't, it's common place

I'm just saying that I wish I could have seen Whedon's full vision
Castiglione
Castiglione - 9/13/2015, 8:17 AM
But Whedon is not Trank, If Whedon was as disrespectful as Trank he would have went on Twitter and started talking about the production

But, that's not Whedon, he's a respectful guy and he's been in the business for a long time
Castiglione
Castiglione - 9/13/2015, 8:20 AM
@Jeight

Agree to disagree, I don't believe that he is satisfied with it, and he did need to do some damage control in a sense, if he never gave those recent interviews, his view of the situation in the public eye wouldn't be as concrete
GrilledPopcorn
GrilledPopcorn - 9/13/2015, 8:24 AM
@Jeight huh? Ashley's as pretty as Elizabeth.

I don't know, Joss said he fought to keep the Hawkeye's family and Brutasha storylines and I thought they were the weakest.
Castiglione
Castiglione - 9/13/2015, 8:27 AM
@Jeight

Yeah, 85% isn't his full vision

Like I said, agree to disagree

I'd say that we got maybe 75% of what Whedon wanted to do
