UPDATE: More From Cobie Smulders On CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

"It's exciting for me because I get to suit up again but it takes place right after The Avengers, 'The Battle of New York' has just happened." What do all you Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline keepers make of that?

The Winter Soldier Maria Hill Captain America

Yesterday, we had word from Smulders that Maria Hill is very much apart of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, despite being absent from the film's first trailer. In a new interview, Smulders adds, "It's another installment of an amazing Marvel film. It's exciting for me because I get to suit up again but it takes place right after The Avengers, "The Battle of New York" has just happened. It's really about [working within] the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, which my character Maria Hill is a big part of. It's showing the inner workings of S.H.I.E.L.D. and how it's very flawed at the moment."

Despite being released after Iron Man 3, it looks as if the events in Captain America: The Winter Soldier will occur beforehand. If you recall, Iron Man 3 picks up 6 months after "The Battle of New York" but according to Smulders, Captain America: The Winter Soldier starts immediately after that climactic showdown in the Big Apple. Perhaps the fallout from The Winter Soldier leaves S.H.I.E.L.D. in such disarray that they're unable to come to Tony's (Robert Downey Jr.) aid in Iron Man 3? We also know Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. occurs after Iron Man 3 and that an upcoming episode deals directly with the fallout from Thor: The Dark World.

UPDATE: Here's more from Smulders, courtesy of Zap2It."I think we just haven't seen much of [Maria Hill]. I think that's why I was so excited to do 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' because I was like oh my gosh I get to do like full talking walking scenes, this is so exciting! In these big Marvel movies, there's so many more important people than me in this film that I even I want to see more than I want to see myself on screen. I think it was just fun to get a moment to sort of talk in character, especially to talk to Coulson. I think [Captain America: The Winter Soldier's] a little bit different. I think, because it is about SHIELD, they're showcasing more of SHIELD, but there's a lot of stuff that's going down with it. [Maria Hill] will say words.

@OmegaDaGod Where is that confirmed? I've only seen one interview with Scarlett Johansson that said there's two years between release dates for The Avengers and Cap but that doesn't mean two years in the MCU have passed.

Also how do we know IM3 takes place precisely 6 months after The Battle of New York?

The Avengers seems to take place either in 2011 or 2012. But IM3 takes place during Christmas 2013.

I have beginning to suspect Marvel Studios is using a sliding timescale similar to the comics.

Maybe Scarlett is the one who has it wrong?

Every other time I've heard it discussed by Feige or whoever, it's been said that it picks up right after the Avengers. Maybe not right after, as SHIELD is building an arsenal, and Romanoff's hair has grown. But six months, instead of two years, maybe?

Do we know for sure if AoS takes place after Iron Man 3? I know they mention extremis in the pilot but they might have known about it before hand. If AoS does in fact take place after Iron Man 3 (6 months post avengers) and TWS takes place before that, then we can pretty much throw S.H.I.E.D being in shambles as the reason they don't help Stark out the window. If shield is organized enough to set up a new secret team led by Coulson they should easily be able to send somebody to help stark out. Not only that but it would tell us that nothing really bad happens to Fury in Cap 2 seeing as he was fine in AoS.

However if AoS does not take place after Iron Man 3 then they might be able to pull it off. I don't know though, AoS is really dicking up the timeline. We know that they will feature the events in TDW in AoS so shield will have to be functional at that time. That would mean the timeline would go TDW>Cap 2>Iron Man 3. Still not ideal, especially if there is no shield presence in TDW.

Getting too hung up on timelines is a pathway to frustration in the MU, but getting a basic chronology surrounding a major event like the BoNYC is pretty important. All the phase 2 stuff (including MAoS) references it. I think Smulders means that the events of AVENGERS directly impact CA:TWS, not that their events flow into one another seamlessly.

I'm pretty sure she would know when it takes place... but who knows.
GinjaNinja

people need to get of the stark thing. Their job isn't to make sure iron man doesn' die from terrorists. he can take care of himself. and did. Plus the fight at his house took 5 minutes. so to think they could get there i absurd.
Orphix
Orphix - 11/4/2013, 6:25 AM
When working on my timeline I have started to notice that every event after Stark says "I am Iron Man" is associated to the year of the release date of the film it is part.

However that doesn't seem to necessarily reflect the time passed with events related to each other. Kind of bizarre but sort of makes sense.

This would mean that IM3 can take place 6 months after The Avengers even though the date of the years is different. But something like WWII or Killian inventing extremis can have accurate years.

The problem is that a newspaper in IM3 sets the date as December 2013.

Honestly, I tend to ignore these exact dates in the MCU.

I'll take the word of actors who have more screen time than her (Scarjo, Mackie & SLJ) And from the people who made the film. Smulders doesn't know what she's talking about.
JusticePourTous
JusticePourTous - 11/4/2013, 6:56 AM
From ScarJo: "This film is in real time. It’s been two years since [the characters] appeared, and now both are agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fighting in the streets."

And the AoS finale is set for the 25th of March, 10 days before the US release of TWS. Damn straight its gonna lead in.

I'm so confused!! Johansson mentioned that it happens 2 years after the Avengers and it's real time or something like that. There is an official timeline from Marvel for Phase 1 so I guess they will also make one for Phase 2 somewhen...

@RyKnow,sure you think that now, unless it was DC doing it.

So far everything is running chronologically. Why would they change it with Winter Soldier which is supposed to lead into Age of Ultron.

So far IM3 was 6 months later and Thor: TDW was 1 year later. Why would they break from it with Winter Soldier. Stop over thinking the room fanboys.

I'm not going to try and hurt myself with this confusion. But I think it maybe possible that Cap: The Winter Soldier would take place just before Iron Man 3 Or very close to the same time. This would explain why their wasn't any assistance, however it's AoS that's making things more confusing. Especially if Shield is in disarray as it appears it will be after The Winter Soldier. I need to see Thor TDW to confirm the clear timeline. But I'm going to really try not to get to hung up on it.

That's my version of the MCU timeline, including all the films, the AoS episodes, the One-Shots, and the canon comics.

Iron Man occurs in Jan-May, 2008.

Iron Man 2's opening scene (with Vanko building his armor) occurs from May, 2008 to November, 2010. Then the "6 months later" tag with the Stark Expo opening places the remainder of that film in May, 2011.

The Incredible Hulk and Thor also occur in May/June, 2011 and overlap with Iron Man 2. Thor's opening scene occurs in 965 AD.

The One Shots "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" occurs just after Iron Man 2 and before Thor, and "The Consultant" occurs just after The Incredible Hulk.

Captain America - The First Avenger mostly takes place from 1942 to 1945. The present day bookend scenes occur just before The Avengers, in around April, 2012. The One Shot "Agent Carter" occurs in 1946.

The Avengers occurs in May, 2012. The One-Shot "Item 47" occurs within days after The Avengers.

Iron Man 3 occurs in December, 2012. The movie's opening scene occurs on New Year's Eve, 1999, and it's stated several times in the film this was 13 years before the present day portion of the film, firmly placing it at the end of 2012.

Agents of SHIELD begins in September, 2013, and will likely run until early to mid 2014 (with its timeline falling in line with its air dates).

Thor - The Dark World occurs in late 2013, October or November, since episode 8 of AoS, "The Well" will pick up immediately afterwards.

Captain America - The Winter Soldier will likely take place around its real world release date, April, 2014, since it's reported the AoS finale will tie into that.

Basic rule of thumb is that generally the films occur around their release dates. The only exceptions are Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk, which were retconned by the Fury's Big Week comic (which is canon) made it clear those films overlapped with Thor.

wcwpoet
wcwpoet - 11/4/2013, 7:13 AM
@ParisSun that makes the most sense. I think Colbie Smulders was simply stating it was taking place after the Battle of New York, and didn't really put a time stamp on it.

I don't think it is official canon. Admittedly it is inspired by the MCU but not part of it.

I have a list somewhere of all the comics that are either part of the MCU or inspired by it.
