Chatting recently with I Am Rogue, actor Dominic Cooper, whose portraying Howard Stark in Marvel and Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger film, reveals an obvious influence for his role. While his character is the father of Tony Stark, portrayed faithfully by Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man franchise, Cooper ultimately dishes on that. Being asked foremost, Cooper says:

“Yeah of course, what a wonderful sort of representation to know who you son is going to become,” replied Cooper. “It gave me an idea of how slick he should be, what a wonderful entrepreneur and inventor the man should be. Then you think of the period of time that he grew up in, so it was wonderful. It was just amazing to be part of that Marvel world.” I followed up and asked the actor to describe the WWII setting and look of the film. “It is very slick. It looks incredible, the mechanics of it,” he said.

After being asked would he collaborate with the studio for future projects, Cooper revealed,“Yeah. I think they’re an incredible company and they make brilliant films.”.

Captain America: The First Avenger focuses on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci and Hugo Weaving, the film releases July 22, 2011.

Wow, roll away the Stark name and you have a decent facsimile of Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. - aka Howard Hughes which Tony Stark was originally inspired from which is now looking like his dad rather than the son. Obvious! :P

I wonder if Howard Stark and Howard Hughes ever met in WW2 era Marvel movie-verse America...

Acting is such a joke nowadays.

Downey is an awesome Tony Stark because in real life he's very similar to the character. It's that simple. And the same goes for just about every actor out there right now.

Christian Bale's best role was American Psycho...and in real life, Christian Bale seems to be kind of a psycho (Which also makes him a great Batman).

Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan the same way he played his character in Waiting....and in just about every other movie he's ever made.

Is it just me, or does that not make any sense at all. Aside from maybe some of the science and math genius, he shouldn't be taking any cues from RDJ. IMO Howard Stark is the guy who busted his ass and made it happen for himself, and then Tony is that rich brat, who eventually finds his way.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, that aside from maybe a quirk or two, I'm going to be very disappointed if we see a bad RDJ impression for Howard Stark. It will cheapen the character.

Really looking forward to this, as of now Marvel is on top, the only way DC can make a comeback is with the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight Rises, here's hoping they deliver!
Still dude, nice find, hope u can check out my The Terminator fan cast!

@JaySin420... what are you talking about? Clearly you've hardly watched any movies. Ever watched the Prestige? Brilliant film, stars Christian Bale and Michael Caine, directed by Chris Nolan. But Bale's performance is completely different to his Bruce Wayne/ Batman. Hell, his Bruce Wayne is completely different to his Batman! Bale is a great actor.

RDJ as Tony Stark is perfect, he looks the part and plays it to a T. Yet, ask anyone who knew RDJ's acting before Iron Man, he was best known as a comedy actor. Ever seen his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin? Like watching an entirely different person. And what about his Sherlock Holmes? Barely recognisable as RDJ.

Hell, even Ryan Reynolds, just watch Buried. A shockingly different role than anything I've ever seen him in.

Sure, there are plenty of terrible actors out there. But none of them are in the good CBMs thankfully. The bad actors are all still starring in Twilight, fortunately.

And @N has the right idea, a perfect example of stellar acting. Heath Ledger was an extremely diverse actor.

Marvel got it goin' on right now!
@FutureCBMHero I don't know, I'm guessing he just means the debonair side of RDJ as Tony Stark is what he based his Howard off, not the spoiled rich kid with the partying problem.

Maybe Howard began to act more serious when he had settled down and had a family. It's very possible that he wasn't always like that, especially in his earlier years. Plus, in Iron Man 2 Howard did tend to act immature when he drank alcohol and it shows in the film that he saved for Tony. It would be pretty funny to see where Tony got his mannerisms from.

@ NerdAlert Yea, but that's the Howard that Tony knew. We're seeing a much younger Howard Stark, and most parents tend to be different before they become...you know, parents.

@Aklash- lol...you mean thats not what hes sayin? Man I agree, Bale is a terrible Batman, hes too small and doesn't have the chin for it. The first time I saw Batman Begins and he reeled the guy up the buiding by his feet and Bale Says "where is he!" all angry like, I thought it was bad ass, but that voice got old quick. When Bales Batman is talkin normal, he sounds like he wearing a diving mask. I think Arron Eckhart would have been better as Batman myself. Oh well.

Yeah, not sure what RDJ's portrayal of Tony Stark has to do with young Howard Stark, they were very different characters. Just a way to tie in the other movies in the franchise, blah blah.

And since we are talking about actors:

I enjoy RDJ as Tony Stark but I think like many it is a guilty pleasure watching him be his RDJ self, which is also funny in many other movies. So we enjoy him = we enjoy the movies = he is perfect for the role? Not quite. I never got a hero vibe from him.

Bale is a great actor, but he is not the Batman. He plays Bruce Wayne as smarmy and weird, and the Batman voice ruined the rest. Why didn't someone stop him the first time before it was too late? They should re-release them with Kevin Conroy dubbed over, lol.

Ryan Reynolds: see RDJ

These are iconic characters and the person selected to portary them is very important to fans and to how these movies turn out. But it is Hollywood after all and who you know and what director you work with and God knows what else ends up making the decision.
