Editorial: Should We Be Worried With The Lack Of Promotion For Captain America?

Or maybe a better question is: Are Marvel worried about Captain America: TFA itself?

Editorial Opinion

Marvel's tentpole Summer movie is due to hit screens in 7 months and in the time since the(as yet unleaked) Comic Con footage we have had a few stills, set pics and a 6 second glimpse of Chris Evans' head on an ET teaser. Thor, which hits only 2 months earlier, has had not only an official teaser trailer but a whole 6 minutes of footage as well as behind the scenes featurettes and a poster. Is it possible that Marvel are unsure exactly how to market the film?

Captain America could be construed as a hard sell anywhere outside of, well, America. And even then overdoing the flag waving elements could turn off many on the home turf too. But underscore that too much and you turn off a whole different crowd. Of course Cap is a patriot, but his ideals extent way beyond "AMERICA: [frick] YEAH!" The best incarnation of the character has always represented the people and the pursuit of personal freedom from all walks of life all over the world. As a fan reading early Cap comics I found the character slightly hard to swallow at times(depending on who was writing) and those, lets call them "cheesy" elements would be amplified ten fold translated to film. Its a difficult balance. Is Director Joe Johnston up to the challenge? In interviews with our own Ed Gross he certainly seemed to have a solid grasp on how Cap should be portrayed but from a technical standpoint, personally, I don't think much of his previous work. In fact with the exception of The Rocketeer(and even then I only thought that was decent) I don't think he has made anything with any substance whatsoever. Visually, sure he can set the scene and create the right mood and atmosphere(Hidalgo, The Wolfman); something that is already evident from the Cap shots we have seen, but when it comes to the characters, to establishing a solid connection to the audience? Well, lets just say I was rooting for the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park 3. And with a character like Captain America that connection is vital if the film is to work.

Of course those are just my own concerns and you may not share them. They may have no bearing on the film at all. But even if everything is going swimmingly with the production and Marvel are very happy with things, the lack of marketing and promo material is a huge mistake. Now is the time to drum up interest. If over the next couple of weeks we begin to see some more from the film then this will be moot but if we don't, and the months pass with nothing? Sure, part of my worry is probably just impatience! I am dying to see how this movie will be presented. And I am cautiously optimistic because in Chris Evans at least, I believe the have the right man for Steve Rogers. But bad films suffer notoriously from lack of promotion. That coupled with my lack of confidence in Johnston has me at least a bit worried. How about you?

Maybe its because Thor comes out first and they don't want to overshadow that? In all fairness, they haven't been promoting Thor any more than Cap. There might be an official trailer for Thor, but it hasn't been shown on tv or anything yet. and neither has anything else thats related to the move. I don't know...

Wait a sec i think Thor is due out May 6 and Cap is due a couple months later . The actual Thor trailer just came out not to long ago so the Cap trailer should be soon .

Great editorial ROR! However, I'm not in the least bit concerned...just pissed off! If the recent rumours are to be believed, we should be getting a behind-the-scenes set visit and trailer sometime this month or in early February. Plus, I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that they've actually released more pictures for Captain America than Thor! (mainly thanks to that Entertainment Weekly feature) It's about damned time we get some more info and pictures regarding this movie though, and I completely share your concerns about Joe Johnston...that's a big part of why I'm so desperate for any sort of footage!

this is marvel studios biggest & most important film they've released to date, until the avengers comes out.

captain america is one of their most popular characters they don't want to f*ck it up.

the trailer will be with us shortly i'm sure of it.

people don't seem very interested in this movie. on non comicbook sites whenever captain america is posted people hardly even comment. strange.

Sorry, bit of a date mix up! But Thor had officially released footage soon after Comic Con remember. I'm sure the marketing will kick in eventually and we will be sick of seeing Cap stuff as is always the way! I'm just surprised that they haven't began some type of campaign to snare the non comic reading public by now.

Josh, yep we have seen a lot of pics but that doesn't give us a proper read on how the material is being handled. Anyway, hopefully this time next week or the week after I'll be eating my words!

I'm sure Marvel know what they are doing, I've worked in marketing before and I can promise you they will have a pretty heavyweight team of experts with a very concise and structured marketing plan.

We are talking about millions of dollars being invested and expected to be returned so they will not be approaching one of the most important aspects of this project lightly.

I also don't believe there should be a problem expecting it to do well outside of America. It's essentially an entertaining war/action/superhero blockbuster, if done well they will always be gladly welcomed in any nation with or without America in the the title.

All I can say is be patient and hold tight, I'm sure it will be worth waiting for...

Sorry ROR, but I have to say this editorial was pointless. It's pretty obvious that Marvel is trying not to completely overshadow Thor with Cap promos. It's also true that Cap comes out 2 months after Thor and over half a year from now. I think some people just need something new to look at every day of the week or else they think something is wrong. Trust me, when Marvel starts their push for Cap you will know it.

I honestly think that when you get right down to it Thor is a not as well known Marvel character and the push for Thor will be a much bigger one intially to get his face out there. Marvel will then kinda ride the wave into the promos for Cap.

Have patience, friends.

Who's worried, I ain't now I know SLJ isn't in WWII lol. : p

Good article with some great points.Fears I share too.I've always found Cap to be a tad racist as a character. And lets face facts,America is probably the worlds least favourite country these days.
As for the marketing angle though,I'm starting to get tired of publicity so early before movies are released.I don't want to see or know everything before I sit down in the theatre.I had seen practically nothing about Batman Begins before I went to see it and the film benefitted in my mind because it all felt new.
I'll watch Cap and I hope I like it.For the sake of The Avengers movie and comicbook movies in general.Every one that hits is a win for comics :)

Wouldn't a heavy amount of promotion actually be more of a sign that they're worried? Studios would be trying hard to sell their product if they knew it wouldn't be able to sell on it's own.

@InFamouslyCool

The Facebook page for the Captain America movie has 52,000 people liking it. Compare that to the Green Lantern movie which only has about 35,000 people liking it.

I think January is gonna be a big news month for Cap and (even more excitingly for me) Febuary is gonna be huge for The Avengers (casting other roles must start then).

In terms of time scale there doesn't seem to much difference between this and Thor. I think a teaser trailer will be appearing toward the end of this month and then the main trailer will be in front of Thor.

Interesting points about Caps appeal outside the US. I think the best way (I am sure they have done this) is to address those themes head on. Cap is a hero because he realises we are all heroes and that he is just one man doing his duty. The fact he is called Captain America and could be forced into being a 'yes man' for the government and supposedly represents a huge super power nation brings its own internal pressures and conflicts that we shall see played out.

Address that head on and you have something that will interest a large audience that goes beyond a domestic one. I think many people will see this as a way of America showing the world what it thinks of itself - a way of dealing with the elements it is proud of and shameful of in equal measure.

It should also be noted that in terms of story, character, cast and crew it has an epic international flavour.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/4/2011, 6:04 AM
The name Thor might not be as well known as Captain America but if you think that movie is a harder sell your nuts! Thor is a fantasy epic with sci fi elements rooted in Norse mythology. Cap is a period film in which a stars n stripes wearing super hero is frozen and wakes up in modern times. That is a hard sell to non comic fans who don't know the ins and outs so Gmoney I disagree that its pointless because I honestly believe that Marvel may be unsure how to promote it. AND possibly even dislike what they are seeing so far from Johnston. You never know.

YES YES and double YES. I have noticed this myself.

These little rinky dink magazine spots and the soon to be seen ET spot aren't even close to enough of the right kind of exposure.

I have my own ideas about the reality of why this is such a "hard sell". But there is, as Rormachine points out, a certian specifically workable way to go about this. And they need to start early and work that angle as hard as they can to make this property into a household word

Conventionally, I know that these months would be considered a bit early to launch a major marketing campaign. And yet I still concur that it it really seems like someone has dropped the ball on this unfortunately crucial aspect of this films performance in the BO

Com’on now…its another 7 months until the release, there’s still plenty of time. We are still over a month away for the Super Bowl, Im sure Marvel will buy some spots for both Thor and Capt America, like they did with both Iron Man movies. Its still a little too soon for Marvel to start spoon feeding us with promotions for both movies. If we don’t start seeing promotions by March or April…then I would be worried.

@Spartan76

What the hell are you talking about?? Cap is the LEAST racist of any comic book character. Unless you're talking about Timely Cap, which Marvel themselves stated has been largely retconned out of the character's history. So other than the Timely version, Cap has always been the spokesperson for humanity and civil rights as well as a mutual respect for other nations. His best friend was and still is a black man. And instead of holding the usual stereotype about Frenchmen, he honors and respects France for their resistance movement and how much ordinary citizens would rise and attempt to fight back against the Nazis.

The Comic-Con footage was just for that particular audience not to mention that Thor had already finished filming. There's only been one official Thor trailer. Cap didn't even start filming until August if I'm not mistaken, but it's been featured in EW already, so I don't think there's anything to worry about. I'm sure they'll have something official in the next month.

Well done Ror, you make some excellent points.

I'm not worried... but I could see how people could be worried.

Joe Johnston accomplishes what he does well... but can he deliver epicness... I dunno...

If they have any sense whast-so-ever they won't over do the patriotism... but once again... I dunno....

Maybe some of you guys are right and they just don't wanna overshadow Thor with Cap advertising...

I say it's going to be good either way... but epic... we'll just have to wait and see...

Holy Crap. I'm in complete agreement with indoraptor12. Spartan76, what are you talking about? Since 1969 Cap's best friend has been the Falcon. Nazis are other white guys. Are you talking about the Japaneses? If so, I think Namor beat them up more during world war II. But he's prejudice against everybody without gills.

SURELY Marvel has a plan all laid out. I agree with those that think there waiting for further promotion of Thor to get embedded in peoples minds before turning to Cap. I don't think this movie with be that hard to promote. Its just a war movie with a superhero spin. So its Captain America. I don't think that will keep movie goers away from a good looking film. Besides, everybody hates Nazis (especially SOAL and Indiana Jones) and NOBODY outside of skinheads and maybe Osama Bin Laden sympathies with the Red Skull.

Honestly, yes, Captain America is very well known. He's the poster child of freedom and American ideals. HOWEVER, Captain America has had a fairly poor history in the film/television medium. He's been portrayed as either campy or just plain suckish (I'm of course talking about the 1991 movie). And in this day in age where EVERYONE is overly critical and demanding to see their favorite superheroes in a darker, more serious light, I think that it is extremely important for Marvel to promote this movie and show us whether it's going to be a campy war propoganda movie or if it will be a more serious, reality driven interpretation of the character. Plus, and I have to say sadly, that comic book fans make up a fairly small population of movie audiences. We are significantly outnumbered by people who don't read comics and don't have too intimate knowledge of the characters. To most people who only know the broad strokes, all they will see is a WWII movie with a dude in a blue suit, swinging around a star spangled shield. I say promotions are necessary

This only started shooting about four months ago so have patience.

This hasn't had the production schedule that Thor had so the digital compositing won't be finished, the colour grading will still be in the process of being finalised and a hundred other things need to be done before Marvel will be happy to release too much stuff.

I'm not too concerned with the lack of images and video, there are still 7 months before release and for a film of this scale, the time between initial photography and final releasae is incredibly short.

Have a little faith, there's lots to be done in a short time so if they're not releasing unfinished snippets be happy - they're working hard 24/7 to make this the best they can.

Great write-up, worries and thoughts, Ror! I share your lack of confidence in regards to Johnston
(even though i did find Rocketeer to be a lot more than merely decent) but i'm nowhere near your page in regards to Marvel's marketing skills. They have proven time and time again that it's not the quantity that counts but the quality. They might not go overboard as much as other studios do but they connect straight to our jugulars with every shot they take. Have no worries in that department bud, i'm sure every non fan will be down for the count with their tickets in hand, long before the premiere ;)

Now, back to my vacation i go. Don't forget to check out the ontest-Cay age-Pay ;P

personally, i dont think that marvel is promoting cap OR thor that good...if i ask any of my non-comic fan friends, they have no idea that either is getting made into a movie.
but, i'd rather them take their time and get the trailer for cap right before they release it. i dont think the time period or stars and stripes of cap will be a problem, but the first reveal of red skull i think will be the hardest to accept. thats why we havent seen anything of red skull so far. and it is hard, how the [frick] to u put red skull into the real world without screwing over the source material or making it look too dumb?

this movie is gonna bomb.... I mean he may make ok on american market but abroad?????! let's face the fact

1- his outfit is one of the cheesiest around . If you 're not at least vaguely acquainted with the character , chance is you won't go see the movie . It won't take much : just casting a glance at the character... He's no batman superman or spiderman .
2- he 's captain FRICKIN AMERICA . Just the name man .
killer combo : army + american myth ...
and after bush administration and wikileaks videos, US army is not exactly at the height of its popularity right now ....

I'm on the bandwagon of promotion has taken a release date priority. Thor is currently first because it will be out first. Trailers and heavy advertising will be widespread because it kicks off the summer season for marvel studios and will more then likely have something in the film to lead into Captain America.

Second This so called "Comic-Con promotional footage" you are talking about was released by a dude with a camcorder inside the marvel panel in san diego. It wasnt released by Marvel. At the time Comic-Con was going on Captain America was only weeks into filming, they hadn't even done filming of Red Skull with make up yet. All they had to show was footage for a costume test and one scene with Red Skull pre-deformation.

And please enlighten me how Captain America which has long been a Marvel icon is a more difficult sell then Thor. So because he is frozen in ice and revived all of a sudden he's completely unbelievable. Yet a god living in another dimension, who fights frost giants, and has to travel on a rainbow bridge to get to our world people will accept without issue. In the world Marvel has created for their Movieverse you cannot deny that Thor by far is the toughest sell.

A Billionaire that makes a mechanical suit, a scientist that via radiation side effects can become a hyde type monster, a soldier that due to genetic enhancement was able to survive suspended animation and an alien god banished to the planet earth to learn of compassion so that he may one day return to his home planet and rule a world of intergalactic power and other worldly creatures. Yeah I totally think the soldier is the one that's the most unbelievable.

Usually the first sign that advertisement is coming for a film is empire magazine, followed by ET. Last I checked Captain America is getting both.
