Roger Ebert Offers A Surprisingly Positive Review Of Captain America: The First Avenger!

After being less than favourable towards THOR, X-Men: First Class and Green Lantern, you may be shocked to discover that The First Avenger is the harsh critics favourite...

He called THOR "pitiful" and gave it 11/2 stars. X-Men: First Class? "Competent weekend entertainment" which scored a slightly better 21/2 stars. Oh, and what of Green Lantern? Surprisingly, that was awarded the same score as Fox's mutant prequel, and he, "...liked it more than Thor." So, what of Captain America: The First Avenger?! In surprising news, he liked it more than all of them! Here are some excerpts from the review, but click on the link below to read the three star review in its entirety.

It was a pleasure to realize, once "Captain America: The First Avenger" got under way, that hey, here is a real movie, not a noisy assembly of incomprehensible special effects. Of course it's loaded with CGI. It goes without saying it's preposterous. But it has the texture and takes the care to be a full-blown film. You know, like with a hero we care about and who has some dimension. And with weight to the story. As we plunge ahead into a limitless future of comic-book movies, let this be an inspiration rather than "Thor" or "Green Lantern."

Now the full-bodied story comes into play, involving, as all good comic-book movies must, a really first-rate villain. This is a Nazi commandant named Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), who essentially controls his own private army and has schemes of surpassing Hitler. His minions salute him, not Der Fuhrer, and he has dreams of creating super weapons. Eventually, as the rules of comic-book drama require, Captain America will pair off against Schmidt, who is revealed to be the hideous Red Skull, whose skin tone makes him resemble those ducks marinated in red sauce you sometimes see hanging in Chinatown restaurant windows. Schmidt demonstrates once again that, when it comes to movie villains, you can't do better than Nazis.

The adventures of Captain America are fabricated with first-rate CGI and are slightly more reality-oriented than in most superhero movies — which say to say, they're still wildly absurd, but set up and delivered with more control. CGI makes another invaluable contribution to the movie, by shrinking the 6-foot Chris Evans into a vertically challenged 90-pound weakling, and then expanding him dramatically into the muscular Captain America. This is done seamlessly and he's convincing at both sizes; I doubt there's a single shot in the movie that shows Evans as he really is.

I enjoyed the movie. I appreciated the 1940s period settings and costumes, which were a break with the usual generic cityscapes. I admired the way that director Joe Johnston ("October Sky" and "Jumanji") propelled the narrative. I got a sense of a broad story, rather than the impression of a series of sensational set pieces. If Marvel is wise, it will take this and "Iron Man" as its templates. See it in 2-D if you can.

I didn't think they did anything to beef him up?

The DC trolls are starting to eat crow, for sure. RT can't stop this film from getting positive reviews. I will be seeing this movie ASAP!

I pretty much agree with all of his reviews.

His information on comic book mythology may not be that great, but everything I expected CA:TFA to be, he described it.

@ MrEko

"He never appreciated CBMs to begin with."

first of all, do some homework. go look at all the CBM's he's rated in the past. He's actually given very good reviews to a lot of CBM's.

also, yeah, he didn't like Thor and GL, but you know what? neither did a lot of comic fans...

Actually as Captain America that is how Evans really is... he went from skinny pretty boy to a virtual bodybuilder for this movie (though the beginning of his bulked up physique was evident in The Rejects)

i didnt like thor or green lantern either. and x-men first class was good but not great. how is this hating?

many of us predicted cap would be the best comic book movie of the year, so hes actually been pretty consistent with most of our predictions

in all fairness, "he tweeted that friends don't let fackasses drive drunk"

but guess what? Ryan Dunn was drunk as hell. His alcohol content was double the legal limit. He was known for driving like a complete asshole even when he was sober, so, sorry to say, but he was an asshole for driving drunk. he was doing over 90 mph, drunk off his ass. he deserved what he got. plain and simple. would you still defend him if he had killed someone in another vehicle? because that could have easily happened.

While I am glad that CA is getting good reviews which should help it make some bank, I wouldn't give too much credence to what critics say. They're just a bunch of Joe Shmoes that got lucky enough to find a job that payed them to watch movies.

@CorndogBurglar - Word

@fangz - I think RT is used by some people just for fun, and by others to help them decide what to see. I don't pay any attention to it. I judge for myself, based on trailers, and news of the film, if I want to check it out. Sometimes I waste money on a piece of shit, but usually I enjoy what I watch.

Could care less what Ebert thinks as a reviewer. A positive or negative review from him does not affect my desire to see this or any other CBM.

Ebert is over rated. Period.

Ebert is a well respected crictic who does his homework and what he says should be taken seriously. But ultimately if you don't agree with him thats okay cos it's just an opinion.

Critics exist so that they can watch sh!t so we don't have to. They are there to save our hard earn cash. When you read enough reviews of different critics you soon see what they like and dislike and can discern what you mean.

Even a bad review can be used positively toward a film if you know the reviewers taste and views.
