THE MARVELS' Teyonah Parris Lauds Director Nia DaCosta's Collaborative Approach To The Sequel

Actress Teyonah Parris will soon make the leap from WandaVision to the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, and she's definitely excited about the level of input Nia DaCosta is allowing her to have.

The Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 11, 2022 as part of a very exciting and experimental Phase Four slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actress Teyonah Parris, who recently debuted as Monica Rambeau in WandaVision, will be co-starring in the film alongside Brie Larson's Carol Danvers and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan (who's titular Disney+ series is set for release later this year).

During an interview with Collider to promote her upcoming role in Candyman, Parris gushed about director Nia DaCosta, who is also directing Parris in The Marvels.

"As far as her actors, I feel like she took, and has taken, even as we started building towards The Marvels, great care to hear our feedback on who this character is, what story we’re trying to tell and finding ways to - I mean, most of the time when I say, ‘Hey, I’m thinking this,’ she’s already thought it and is thinking it and has been working on ways - she was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was gonna get to that. There’s this, this and this that I’m thinking about for that moment.

"I’m like, ‘Oh, well, okay!’ So I love that she’s always thinking ahead and that I always feel very welcome to go and talk with her and to hash out story points and character arcs and development."

The Marvels features a total creative shift from its predecessor, with DaCosta replacing the tag-team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck in the director's seat. Megan McDonnell, who served as a staff writer on WandaVision, wrote the script for the sequel, whereas the first installment had five different hands on the screenplay (including Boden and Fleck).

I wish they would've just waited for this sequel to give Monica her powers. Her origin in Wandavision was a weakspot for me.

After the mediocrity that is Captain Marvel - it can only go up from here right?

…. right?!?

@BornToLose - Completely new creative team and two other co-stars to help shoulder the load. Hopefully there's a decent villain. Yon-Rogg wasn't much of a threat.

@BornToLose - I'm thinking the reason for the name change is to sort of soft reboot it.

@MarkJulian - yeah the fact that it’s a completely new team behind and honestly in front makes this interesting.

@Origame - Marvel has to be privy to the fact that a lot of people (incels aside) didn’t care much for the film critically.

Sure, it made a shit ton, but the reception wasn’t what they were expecting so they’re infusing new aspects to make it more appealing.

I will admit that Teyonah Parris was mostly great in WandaVision so I’m excited to see where they take her in this.

I'm stoked for her Candyman remake, and I'm not even a horror fan. Kinda looking forward to this. Maybe it'll be The Winter Solider for Carol

Least interesting part of her origin story was her onset of powers. Besides that I really dug her. Very cliche, forced.

Now that’s out of the way I hope they can do something interesting with her. Good actress.

Scratch that:

The outro was forced as [frick]. Didn’t work at all with the finale.
