At first I was skeptical about audio books. Only thing I knew about them were from tv, which usually consisted of a person listening to a self-help tape while they slept. I was talking to my friend one day and he asked me had I ever listened to a DC Audio book. My answer was, "no way." He told me to trust him and he lent me his Kingdom Come Audio book on CD.
I decided the best way to listen to this would be in my car. There were four disc, with each about 40 minutes long and I have about a 45 minute drive to college. Perfect!
I popped in the first disc and noticed immediately that it was in full stereo after a couple of minutes I was sucked in.
The first words were, "There were voices...and thunderings, and lightnings...and an earthquake."
The voice of the Spectre was ominous and reverbed. The sound of thunder and lightning rang in my ears. Having read Kingdom Come about a dozen times I could envision every scene.
Each voice was unique. Superman's voice sounded seasoned and honest. Wonder Woman's was strong and confident. Batman's voice sounded very intellectual and conceited. The most fitting voice was that of Norman McCay. His voice was consistent with emotion. His voice would waver in doubt, and become firm with faced with his convictions.
The sound effects were mostly fitting. I was irked a little by the sound of Superman's heat vision, but not so much it ruined any of the experience. Being in full stereo really made this for me. I felt like I was in the in the middle of it all with Norman McCay.
The dialogue was spot on with the book for the most part, even adding some that wasn't. This new dialogue didn't alter the story at all it actually helped add my imagination even better.
I haven't read the novelization so I can't attest to it being word for word, but having read the graphic novel and I can say this audio book did it justice.
There weren't too many negatives except a couple of voices (Robin, Power Woman) but these negatives weren't enough to take away from the story.
Overall, I was so glad I listened to this. It was a real treat I'd give this a 9.5/10. I recommend this to anyone who loves the characters, and those who love a good story.
