POLL: What do you think about Superman Renouncing his American Citizenship?

As reported earlier, DC has decided that Superman is going global and not aligning himself with any one country. But for those of us who grew up with truth, justice and "the American way" it may be a hard change to make. What are your thoughts?

Well, he is an immigrant but as we all know it was his conservative values that in the end defines him. So in essense he has always been American but he has always been a global superhero. I doubt this will change much. Kent would never throw away his moral and ethics, and that is what he embodies.

I never got the "American Values" thing.

To those people: So you're telling me that only the "American Values" tell you about peace??

To be honest, Superman is the perfect Buddhist. So then it should be the "Dalai Lama Values" if you really wanna be that way. lol

As far as technicality goes, yes, he is American

Even though his motto is "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" the American Way part doesn't apply any more. That was coined at a time when it was about creating a good life for yourself and your family, working hard and seeing it pay off. It was created in a time where America was a true Power and was the light that shown on the world. Now...The American way is tabloid idiocy coupled with political corruption and all run by corporations. I am an American, but every day I am more and more disgusted with my country. This only seems fitting. If I were Superman I wouldn't want to be linked with The “New American Way” either.

Having Superman stop doing for the U.S. government, and having him instead start doing things for the UN would have been fine. Going as far as having him officially renounce his citizenship, which I am surprised SUPERMAN even has, seems like a purely political move.

Clark Kent was raised on a Kansas farm, by two American Farmers, he is an American.

I am also surprised that DC would do such a thing with a DC movie coming out, there will undoubtedly be backlash.

Oh god, I hope no one decides that Hal Jordan needs to renounce his citizenship.

While denouncement seems like a bit much, it does make sense.
Every time Supes would intervene in a conflict, America would get abuse from somebody.

But more importantly, he's an alien who calls Earth his home.
Being labelled anything more specific than "Earth's hero" attaches too much baggage to him.

He's Kryptonain-Earthican :P

he's from krypton,earth is he's second home.

when there is an invasion force attacking earth he saves the world not just america.

dc comics doesn't even feature a proper america anyway.

-gotham city
-metropolis
-central city

what other made up cities feature in the america of the dc universe.

I think it is a step towards being a global leader for a character like Superman.

However, I never really thought of "Superman" having citizenship anywhere that he could possibly denounce. I would assume as Clark Kent he would but perhaps I need to pick up 900 to see what is going on.

@Illuminatus - Just because YOU do not care about Superman doesn't mean that others don't. Your condescending attitude toward a character that stands for truth, justice, hope and inspiring the absolute best in others makes you sound like a d-bag who tries to be cool and crap on anything that isn't considered edgy and dark in modern times following the flock of sheep that do the same. I'm not saying you are one...just thats how your comment came across :)

As much of an American he's always been, Superman is a hero of the entire globe. He's here to represent all of humanity, not just to be isolated in one surrounding. He's meant to be shared so that all see him for the hero that he is. Besides, as Clark Kent he'll always be an American. Superman is what he can do for the planet, and its time he spreads his message.

Ummmm....don't want to open the 'conspiracy can 'o worms', but this REEKS of globalist/NWO indoctrination through mass media. Kids pick up Superman, read it that he stands for the world, etc. No more 'USA propaganda', now its just 'global propaganda'. Breaking down the essence of the character IMHO. Why now? Why the change? I'm all for global togetherness, but not at the cost of national sovereignty. Man, I sound like a kook. =P

I think it kinda makes sense. I'm American. but I've never really like the whole "american way" part of the slogan. It's not like America is the only place with any sort of morals in the world. Putting that in there with truth and justice just seems arrogant. I'm also not a fan of the name "Justice League of America" It all just seems so old fashioned. Patriotism is cool but I don't feel like it needs to be a significant part of Superman or the JL's image.

Makes sense for the character. Batman was always about Gotham and Gotham always came first for him. Superman has always been the opposite of Batman so I think he would be more worldly. Besides, he's a boyscout type, he would want to help where help is needed.

Whether you're an America hater or not, the U.S. government is built upon individual rights. That is the "American way" which is unique to our country. No others have come close to our kind of freedom, and protection from tyranny.

Also, I tend to think that since he was created by Americans, he should stay an American. We've outsourced all our jobs, and now we're giving away our superheroes? If there is one thing about this country that I hate, its the self loathing of our spoiled citizens. America is exceptional. Deal with it.

@teabag - well, they're closer and closer all the time. I'd say the big differences now were in government regulation (construction, business, banking, land use) also, in free speech. Also, or course, part of it is just because America is a big freaking country. One city might outlaw standing around, lots of others don't.

Teabag@ I think that it's that we became free from english rule after that little skirmish against England back in the day(which was a Tuesday). Which made everyone feel "free"and have been rollin with that since.

I think most Americans know we aren't the only "free place" in the world, but we have the most pride in the freedoms we have.

Mother Teresa, Ghandi and others were/are global heroes. It still does not take away their identity to the country they were raised in. You can be a global hero and still have your identity as an American. Superman grew up and lives in America, regardless of whether he is from Krypton originally.

@tea i dont think we here in the USA are more free than folks in the UK. ya we can buy guns but different states here in the USA have different laws. Like in Arizona you can buy a gun, or many guns with little verification at all, especially if your mentally ill. But in California, its like impossible to get a gun with all the verification checks the state does. So, to say we are more free than the UK, I would say that it depends on what state you live in.

Standing around in a city law? I wouldnt doubt it. Here is a random list of STUPID USA Laws. Who lives in Alabama? Here are some laws only in the state of Alabama.

1. Bear wrestling matches are prohibited.
2. It is illegal to impersonate a person of the clergy.
3. It is considered an offense to open an umbrella on a street, for fear of spooking horses.
4. It is illegal to wear a fake mustache that causes laughter in church.
5. You may not have an ice cream cone in your back pocket at any time.

NOW FOR ARIZONA!

1. A man can legally beat his wife, but not more than once a month.
2. Donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs.
3. In Arizona it is illegal to take naked photographs before noon on Sunday
4. It is unlawful to refuse a person a glass of water.
5. When being attacked by a criminal or burglar, you may only protect yourself with the same weapon that the other person possesses.
