COMICS: Marvel To End Mark Waid's Eisner Award Winning DAREDEVIL With Issue #36

COMICS: Marvel To End Mark Waid's Eisner Award Winning DAREDEVIL With Issue #36

Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso is clearly determined to make sure none of their comic books ever reach their 50th issue as The Man Without Fear looks set to be the latest character to receive an unnecessary relaunch as part of the money grabbing "Marvel NOW!" initiative. Read on for details!

Daredevil artist Chris Samnee has confirmed via Twitter that February's issue #36 of the critically acclaimed series will be the last. He also provided the cover for that comic, and this follows editor Steve Wacker's cryptic comments in the latest letter page of the series in which he mention a "big two-part finale to this era of Daredevil." It seems likely now that the series will be relaunched with a new #1, making it understandable as to why so many fans find themselves infuriated by Marvel's habit of renumbering their books ever 18 - 24 months. While the short-lived sales boost a new #1 (and higher $3.99 price tag) may make Marvel happy, the fact that not a single Marvel title is now numbered in the triple digits is a disappointment to those who respect their 50 years of publishing history. A silver lining here though is the fact that the current creative team doesn't appear to be going anywhere. "They may or may not involve a drastic shift in Matt Murdock's career and lifestyle," writer Mark Waid said of what 2014 holds in story for Daredevil in a recent interview. "But we do know this one thing for sure: the Waid/Samnee/Rodriguez/Caramagna team isn't going anywhere, and we're striving for new heights!"

They want new readers, if you have an alternative plan to #1's instead of casual readers jumping on at #398, i'd love to hear it.

Having a new #1 for a new writer's run makes a lot of sense to me, as long as that writer intends to stick around for a while.

There's nothing to stop them celebrating anniversaries, what the hell difference does it make?

Never once when I was young & started reading comics did I care about what stupid issue number the book was.

Has sales indicated Marvel is right & starting books back to #1 really increases sales?
If so..people are stupid, the buying public & the comic companies.

I'm not talking about young people. I'm talking about adults. If you give a comic to an adult for them to try, odds are they'd be happier and feel less overwhelmed with an introductory first issue than with a #somethinghundred.

If you're a kid, you'd be happy just to get any damn thing.

LMAO I'm pretty sure Marvel knows how to run their business at this point. Josh is still upset Dan Slott pulled his card and now hates Marvel. This book was great, and whatever project the creative team lands on will be just as good.

Hey @josh how many DC titles are in the 50s orrrrrr in the triple digits..? ;)

I agree it should just keep going but if marvel and waid wanna relaunch the title they can do that and imagine...we might have more readers jump on board this time around!! Try to see the glass half full bud

I'd give Josh shit for editorializing again, but he's right this time. This marketing gimmick has gone on too long. Same book, same creators, same character? It's insulting to the loyal readers.

@loki668

Don't even joke about that!

On topic, I don't really care too much about renumbering. It increases sales so whatever. Although my favourite parody of Marvel's renumbering policy was in the latest arc of the Image comic, Skullkickers. Every single issue of the arc was issue 1 and came under a different subtitle. Eg. Uncanny Skullkickers or All-New Skullkickers.

Victor said it better than I was going to. I was thinking let's just have all of Marvel's (and DC will follow) titles go six issues and then relaunch under the new mega event of the moment. Think of it - every six issues collectors and new readers will flock to the holiest of holy grails . . . the FIRST ISSUE of a brand new comic.
Added bonus: This will make repackaging in trade backs a lot easier.

I think you're right about this having SOMETHING to do with the inevitable Daredevil movie/show. I hope it's just a tad bit darker than the current run, not Frank Miller dark, but still kind of gritty.
xcrementus
xcrementus - 10/24/2013, 6:59 AM
every 6 would be a nightmare to keep track of. But I don't see a problem with renumbering after 2+ solid years of work, as long as the change in direction warrants it.

I just thinking having a Bendis era colllection 1-whatever, followed by a Brubaker #1-whatever, and Waid #1-whatever makes sense in the long run. They were all so different from each other.

Obviously, each case should be taken on its own merits.

To be honest, long runs on comic series can be quite damaging. I think a lot more comic series would do a lot better as 12 to 24 part story arcs, then start again when the next starts up. If you look at Amazing Spiderman and Superman, they went on forever, it was really hard for new readers to just jump in and get to know what is going on. Continuous series also suffer from a lot of filler stories that aren’t really relevant, the 90’s and 2000’s were full of filler stories that were not relevant to anything. The only bad side to this though, is that when something does happen, things really have to escalate for it to be relevant.

I have to say, Superman (and a lot of DC stuff to be honest) could be a lot better in smaller story arcs or maxi series. There, of course, will be a lot of people complaining that they don’t get a monthly comic, but in the long run, the comics will (hopefully!) be of a better quality and gather a bit more interest than normal. Marvel, though, just need to put the brakes on the whole “Big Event” thing they seem to do every quarter, it just gets boring. For me, they need to focus on the characters more and not the destruction of the Marvel universe every few months. I mean, really... If you were super powered and had to fight off Earth destroying aliens every other month for years on end, surely you’d wonder what the point is and leg it on a F4 spaceship to the arse end of nowhere in the universe where there is some peace and quiet and with a nearby bar and brothel!? For me, a decent Marvel storyline would be Captain America just going “[frick] this, I'm off...” and seeing him buggering off to a club to pull some trashy women.

I have not read Daredevil in quite a while as I have never known when to start reading, the new #1 issue will be a great jumping on point for me personally.

Who needs to "keep track" of anything? Just read it if it's a good story. And take comfort in the fact that Marvel is getting new readers to join you in your NEW SPECIAL FIRST EDITION! I mean a NEW first issue every six months . . . that would be the best!
Who needs gradual arcs when you could get a reboot before the writer goes stale!

Yes because's DC's new 52 titles every year isn't a money grab.

KrazyForKomix
KrazyForKomix - 10/24/2013, 7:39 AM
Of course it is! Both Marvel and DC have decided that the old readers will be there NO MATTER WHAT. So they'll change and change and change hoping to attract new readers. But here's the thing . . . if I don't think my favorite comic has a shot at a good long run; if it doesn't have a chance at establishing itself and its tone in the Marvel Comic Book universe: if they're going to ignore any nuance that ONLY comes from a writers ability to explore different aspect of how THAT character fits into the Marvel Universe as a whole – then it just becomes a series of short stories in a larger anthology. If that is where were headed . . . I'm out. I'll just start picking up only the trades that interest me and/or get great comic fan reviews.

I think I'm done "collecting."

I'm rapidly becoming disillusioned with Marvel Htey have made so many bad decisions in the past 4-5 years with their titles. Killing off Rich Rider (NOVA) in favor of a 15 year old twerp. Now this.

wcwpoet - 10/24/2013, 8:18 AM
Look I agree there needs to be an end to the constant relaunches and new number ones, but I just can't stand the hypocrisy when one guy tries to call out Marvel for a money grab when the other Big comic company does the same thing. Personally it doesn't bother me as long as the story is solid. It could be 1 or 1000 for all I care as long as the story is good than I'll buy it other wise I won't. I don't grab a book just because it says number 1

What Daredevil actually needs is a kick ass videogame like Arkham Asylum.

The Nightvision is there already!

Even Captain America got a decent game copied from that Batman Game.

There´s a recent videogame called "Rain" which actually steals Daredevil´s movie "rain vision"! Damn!
