SPIDER-GWEN: THE GHOST-SPIDER Comic Book Will Bring Gwen Stacy To Earth-616...For Good This Time!

Next April, Stephanie Phillips and Chris Campana launch a new Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider ongoing comic series that looks set to solidify the character's place in the main "Earth-616" Marvel Universe...

Following a variety of acclaimed solo titles and appearances on both the big and small screen, Gwen Stacy of Earth-65, a.k.a. Ghost-Spider, has proven to be one of Marvel's biggest breakout heroes of the decade.

Hailing from an alternate Earth where the fateful radioactive Spider bit Gwen instead of Peter Parker, Ghost-Spider has since weaved her way into the main Marvel Universe, calling both dimensions home...until now! Next April, a new run of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider will make Gwen a permanent resident of the iconic Earth-616.

Ghost-Spider’s new era will be delivered by two rising Marvel Comics stars - writer Stephanie Phillips (Capwolf & the Howling Commandos) and artist Chris Campana (Red Goblin). Kicking off with Gwen trapped in the 616 by mysterious otherworldly forces, the young hero's fresh status quo will open the door to exciting new storytelling opportunities as she struggles to adjust in a world that’s not her own, and is forced to confront the tragic legacy of 616's own Gwen.

Hitting the ground running as New York’s next great superhero, she’ll gain both new enemies and new friends, but the secret behind her current circumstance looms large, threatening to shatter her trust with her fellow Spider-Heroes.

Welcome to New York! Gwen truly becomes a Ghost-Spider when she moves full time to the universe where Gwen Stacy died years ago. But why did she leave Earth-65? Why aren’t the other spiders supposed to know she’s here? Why isn’t she supposed to suit up? And who will get hurt when she does?

"Right after I started working on this new Spider-Gwen ongoing, I saw a little girl on Halloween dressed as Gwen and hitting some cool spidey poses," Phillips says. "It was kind of a surreal moment to realize that I get to be a part of Gwen's next big chapter, bringing her into the 616 and giving readers stories that make us rethink who Gwen is and what her role is within this new universe."

"I'm also working on this story with the incredible Chris Campana, a great collaborator and friend, and I truly believe this is one of the most special books I've been a part of."

Campana adds, "Stephanie’s writing allows for a ton of artistic freedom, while providing a great framework to work inside of. I was onboard the moment I heard she was attached. Drawing Gwen is surreal. She is such a pivotal part of Spider history. This suit and her character allow for a fun and powerful artistic approach. Gwen feels strong and in control on the page. I’m having a lot of fun."

@dracula - Eh not really, but thats just cause batmans is so large lol.

Only took 50 years.

@ObserverIO - 50? What do you mean 50 lol?

@BlackSpider - They killed Gwen Stacy in 1973 and were flooded with hate mail.

She's one of the only people who has stayed dead in all of comics.
Sure they've cloned her a few times but only temporarily. And there've been alternate universe variants like Spider-Gwen, but they were only ever visiting. They were never 616 residents.

Now Spider-Gwen is gonna be a permanent resident of the canon universe. Gwen's back for good. Technically not the same Gwen sure, but we now have Gwen back in canon. It only took 'em 50 years.

@ObserverIO - This isn't really gwen though. Its an alternate version, whoi is pretty drastically different. I mean you could have saiud she is back alreadt

@ObserverIO - To most spiderman fans, spidergwen is her own character now. I do get your point but the original gwen is still dead and feels completely different. To stretch it, you could argue its similar to ben reilly and Peter parker.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/19/2023, 2:37 PM
@BlackSpider - Sure, but now she's lives in 616 she's not just an alternate universe variant anymore, she's part of the cast of 616.

Same thing happened with Iron Man.

The current Iron Man is not the real Iron Man. The real Iron Man died in 1995 in a story called 'The Crossing' and was then replaced with an futuristic alternate reality teenaged version of himself, who eventually morphed into the Tony we know today. He's basically got all of the old Stark's memories, but it's technically an alternate universe version of him.

Essentially Iron Man came back even though it's technically an alternate universe variant.

@ObserverIO - I'm not familiar with that Iron Man arc, but the intention feels very different here. From what you're saying, they essentially had new Tony fill the role of old Tony. Alternate Gwen will not be assuming a role anything like original 616 Gwen. Different personality, younger so not a potential love interest to Peter, and she's a superhero. Aside from the name and some similar friends and family in her universe, she's pretty much an entirely different character who will occupy an entirely different role.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/20/2023, 4:09 AM
@BIGBMH - That's similar enough though. If you're Gwen Stacy's grandmother and your granddaughter is killed by some crazy Willem Dafoe looking mf, then 5 years later the same girl returns having not aged a day, then as far as you're concerned, she's came back from the dead.

And who's to say that Parker won't start a relationship with her? Sure he's in his twenties now and she's still like 19, but it would give him the chance to utter this immortal line...

Normally I’d be all for this, but her supporting staff was soooo good in her solo.

And here I am still waiting for Kaine to get a series again (His run by Christopher Yost was great imo).

616 universe...Why?
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/19/2023, 2:38 PM
@MaxPaint - Same reason they did Miles. Too popular to be left hanging in an adjacent universe.

Spider-Gwen must have hit that 150 copies per month sales target.

What a [frick]ing lame ass marketing move.

Can't wait for Uncle-Ben Team-Up and Giant Size Spectacular Spider-May Annual!

Bring back Peter Parker's parents as Marvel Zombies - put 'em in that awesome What If show lol
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 12/19/2023, 3:31 PM
I haven't read her series, but I wish they'd allow her to stay in her own universe. I found that the shift to 616 hurt Miles's story by stripping away some of the valuable context and supporting cast. It just feels like Marvel wants to be able to have its popular characters cross over as often as possible, without regard for what that means to the ongoing stories their fans have invested in.
HenrySpiderman
HenrySpiderman - 12/19/2023, 3:51 PM
@BIGBMH - This is why they work better in like spiderman ps4, because they can have their own casts set up there

I would not have her come from a different universe. I would rather someone travel back in time and change the outcome of her apparent death. Otherwise this Gwen has no history with Peter Parker.

Popular character from alternate universe designed to stand on its own gets transported to first original universe.

rinse and repeat

This truly sucks. The best part of the original book was the style of her universe and how they re-imagined Marvel characters like Daredevil or Punisher. If you take her out of Earth 65, you eliminate what makes her stand-out as a Spider-hero. Absolutely baffling and stupid decision!

Marvel getting tired with all Spider-Man variants living on own earth
