Getting it out of the way first, Daredevil was the inspiration for a real-life love tale off-screen. When they played the tragic superhero couple, Affleck and Garner were each engaged to high-profile partners; the Oscar winner for Good Will Hunting was dating Jennifer Lopez, while the Alias star was wed to Scott Foley.
However, they began dating a year after the movie's release and were married in July 2005. They divorced ten years later, in 2015, and had three kids together. Affleck and Lopez reconciled in 2021, and they were married this past summer.
Director Mark Steven Johnson claims he has nothing but happy recollections of filming his stars' on-screen romance but declines to comment on their personal relationships in real life.
"It was a wonderful shoot... We were on the rooftops of downtown L.A. or in New York City late at night, and it was just fun. It was its own world that you create around it. Even though there was a lot of pressure on me [as the director], there was an incredible on-set vibe."
Johnson had a good bit to say when he was asked about Marvel's involvement with the production process.
"Certainly, Avi Arad — who was the head of Marvel back then — was all over the movie. And [current Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige was a vice president then, and we spoke the same language," said the director. "We were the nerds who grew up with the comics: the True Believers. Kevin was always brilliant, and you could tell that he was going to be someone you could trust and go to with questions. He was great back then, and he's great now. I also met with [former Marvel Comics boss] Joe Quesada because his Daredevil run with Kevin Smith influenced my take. The first scene of the movie where he's draped over the cross beaten and bloodied was from their comics."
The storyteller also mentioned how he and Frank Miller, the renowned American comic book writer, had a meeting. Plus getting Frank in the movie! (He is the individual holding a pen in his head).
Note that there was a significant snowstorm in New York while filming that scene, and it had a protracted set-up.
Frank then remarked, "Let's get out of here," and they headed over to the White Horse Tavern, where Miller was still holding the pen in his head that was spewing fake blood.
Due to the fact that They were in New York, no one was surprised and just gave them a "Yeah, whatever" look as they sipped their drinks in the bar and laughed it off.
He also recounted the numerous names that were thrown around for the main characters, some of them we may not have even known about! Matt Damon and Guy Pearce may be something of common knowledge now, but Johnson went on to say how Edward Norton and he did meet for the possibility of the part.
Seth Rogen also came in to read the part of Foggy Nelson but was turned down because he appeared too young to be a lawyer.
Were you aware of those last couple of actors in the running? Could you picture a Daredevil remake with Edward Norton and Seth Rogan? Let's hear it down in the comments!
