DEADPOOL Franchise Will Reportedly Remain R-Rated Under Disney But That Could Keep Him Out Of The MCU

We didn't really get many huge updates from Disney's earnings call last night, but the studio's plans for the Deadpool franchise following the merger with Fox may have finally become a little clearer...

Last night, Disney held its first-quarter earnings call and while we were hoping for some big news, that was sadly nowhere to be seen.

Disney CEO Bob Iger did, however, confirm that future Deadpool movies could keep the R-Rating they've had at Fox. The first two instalments made over $1.5 billion between them so you can see why Disney isn't necessarily going to rush into heading down the PG-13 route despite the popularity of Once Upon a Deadpool last year.

Iger cautioned that any future Deadpool movies would be required to be "carefully branding [R-rated films]…so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer." In other words, they may not boast the Disney or Marvel Studios logo, and that could keep the Merc with the Mouth out of the MCU.

It would be a shame for that to be the case, but just like Deadpool only vaguely referenced the main X-Men franchise, a similar route could be taken for another movie featuring the character.

After all, he could talk about The Avengers and X-Men but wouldn't necessarily have to cross paths with them; Marvel Studios would just have to choose the characters the movie uses carefully and presumably reboot it somewhat to avoid any confusion with it being linked to X-Men adventures that are no longer canon. Confusing, right?

Here's hoping things start becoming clearer in the coming weeks and months!

It would have to stay R-Rated. But joining or at least utilizing MCU characters is an absolute must and a sure-fire cash cow. They can advertise it accordingly and still keep it geared for the appropriate audience. Matter of fact, releasing an R-rated movie like Deadpool can be billed as a special rare event, in which case they can garner even more hype and bring in more bucks. Remember, Walt Disney Studios owns other subsidiary studios that release R-rated movies. Fox is about to be another that they officially own.

@MosquitoFarmer - He actually didn't say anything about it not being in the MCU. At least not in this article.

"Iger cautioned that an R-Rated Deadpool movie would require them to be sure they're "carefully branding [R-rated films]…so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer." In other words, they may not boast the Disney or Marvel Studios logo and that could keep the Merc with the Mouth out of the MCU."

All he said is they need to brand it very carefully. Josh is the one that jumped to the conclusion that means it won't be in the MCU.

Personally, I take this to mean that they will make sure that everyone knows its R-Rated. Whether that means careful advertising, or maybe even putting a new heading on these films, like "Marvel MAX" or something like that. But nowhere does it eve hint that it wouldn't be in the MCU.

@CorndogBurglar - Agreed.

@CorndogBurglar - Yeah I know. I'm just talking about how they could take advantage of the R-rating during promotion in the MCU.
But we must all let Wilding have his fun to get some clicks.

And Marvel MAX I could dig, considering...

@MosquitoFarmer - I agree about him sticking R-rated, but I was thinking what if they use him more as a cameo in some of the mcu films, now that Stan Lee has passed! Not in all of the movies but appear every so often to point out silly plot points or help out one of the characters, could be funny?

Honestly I’d rather have a PG-13 Deadpool in the MCU than a R-rated Deadpool not in the MCU. I’ve already gotten that twice.

Deadpool movies feature cameos/appearances from MCU characters in smaller stories that don't impact the MCU at large while the MCU proper does not reference or feature Deadpool. Problem solved. Those not old enough for Deadpool don't miss any MCU development and Deadpool gets to play.

@Catmanlives -
...In fact the added bonus of that would be getting to see MCU heroes in some smaller, more intimate ground level stuff. Spider-Man would be awesome although I realise the Sony issue.

@Catmanlives - Yes, and those mature enough to realize comedy doesn't require dick jokes and action doesn't need to be so graphic, can skip Deadpool and not miss any MCU development either.

I like Deadpool, but he's not for everyone, and better as his own thing.

Meh.
Anything that keeps the current Deadpool as Deadpool as we know him rather then squeeze him into a box that he doesn’t fit into is fine by me.
Not that it matters of course.
Deadpool is already an insanely profitable franchise.
It doesn’t need Disney to kid friendly the [frick] out of it just for the sake of the MCU.
If they want it to, it will.
If they keep it separate, it will still be wonderful and what DP fans want.
MCU problem?
More like a money making problem to me lol

It’ll probably be the diet “r” of the Netflix shows enough violence for the rating but no fbombs and boobs covered up during sex scenes

@TheCoonII - thank god that none of those things make a movie better.

Isn't the Black Widow movie aiming for an R rating? If so, will that keep her out of the MCU from then on as well?
Catmanlives
Catmanlives - 2/6/2019, 2:13 AM
@WackyBantha - Could be done by telling a story that is isolated without impacting the greater MCU. Plenty of comicbook stories like that.

Nowhere its indicated it wont be in the mcu. A different label could still be handled by feige.

Iger is the that said THERE SHOULDNT BE TWO MARVELS. What do you think that means?
Catmanlives
Catmanlives - 2/6/2019, 2:21 AM
@Jeight8 - Yep. Good point. There are plenty of ways to work this.

And like someone else said. They are reportedly looking to make the Black Widow film Rated R too. You know that will have to be in the MCU because there's no way that wouldn't confuse people.
