The first two Deadpool movies were massive box office hits, so it's definitely surprising that Marvel Studios hasn't made the Merc with the Mouth's return to the big screen - and Marvel Cinematic Universe debut - a priority. Recently, the character's creator Rob Liefeld tore into the studio for not giving Deadpool 3 the green light, but he's now attempted to clarify some of those remarks.
"Do I know that there is no movement on a Deadpool 3 right now? I know that. Yes," he claims. "And does that worry me? No. Not at all. What I did was I answered a question honestly. And what I learned this week is just lie. Just tell people everything is lollipop and unicorns and rainbows and you’ll be better off in your life because people want to be lied to."
"Just because some guy goes, ‘Yeah, We’re still moving along’ that’s code for ‘There’s nothing to see here.’"
It's been reported that Liefeld may be annoyed because he's not listed as a producer on the movie after a call sheet surfaced late last year, but he wants everyone to know that he's cashing in either way, so that's not something which concerns him too much.
"I have Deadpool revenue streams that have existed since 1991...I already get paid," the comic book writer and artist exclaims. "If you make this movie [or not], I’m getting a fat check."
Ultimately, though, it sounds like Liefeld just wants to see Ryan Reynolds in charge. "My opinion is Ryan [Reynolds] should be steering the ship and just completely handed the reins, even to the point of plugging characters in...Give him three characters he can integrate and let him integrate them. If people ask what I want to see, that’s where it begins. Just please don’t micromanage the guy. Just give him free rein."
It's impossible to imagine Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige being on board with that, and while we're sure they have plans for Deadpool, they're clearly taking their time and another movie is bound to be a good few years away. Ultimately, though, it's hard to imagine his popularity waning.
