Zombieland/G.I. Joe Writers Discuss Sequels & Deadpool Movie

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick reveal more details on their upcoming action packed films.

The DenofGeek website managed to have an interview with the Zombieland writers as their Blu-ray and DVD formats id release in the UK.

From DenofGeek: What can we expect from Zombieland 2?

Paul: "There are a couple of things you can expect. One, we will hopefully have all our cast back – everyone’s excited to return. We will also introduce new characters; it will be in 3D..."

Rhett: "It will be a bigger budget so there’ll be more grand zombie killing. In every way it’ll be bigger. The cast will be bigger, the action scenes will be bigger and, hopefully, with 3D you will be looking down to make sure that’s not blood on top of your popcorn."

People who haven't gotten the chance to watch Zombieland should purchase the DVD when it releases in the U.S. It is the perfect zombie related film I have ever seen.

Personally, I am getting frustrated with the overuse of 3D technology nowadays or in the near future. However, if the directors and writers of a film want to utilize 3D and have confidence in its glamor, it is fine by me. Zombieland 2 with blood and corpses flying all over the theater seems a little too much for me though these guys have gained my respect ever since I saw the first film.

DenofGeek: What’s it like writing a movie specifically for 3D?

RR: "We hear a lot of people say, ‘Oh no, we’re not going to write to the 3D, we’re just going to make a great a great story because we don’t want the 3D to affect the story’ or ‘Ee don’t want it to be too gimmicky.’ We couldn’t disagree more. We really want to write to 3D, we’ll be having things fly at camera, we’ll be using the gimmicks, because why not? The new 3D is such a high quality, it’s going to provide us with opportunities that filmmakers haven’t had until recently and why not take advantage of those?"

PW: "They say that 3D and good character and story are mutually exclusive, you can’t have both, and once you start writing for 3D you lose your drive and you’re paying more attention to what’s coming at you rather than the characters and story. We think you can do both, and do both great."

The release date may be next year, but judging by the uncertainty the writers express by their next quote, it may be another 3 years till we see the sequel.

DenofGeeks: Are you looking at a 2011 release date for the movie?

PW: "We’re just not sure. The studio’s excited to make it, we’re excited to write it and direct it and the actors seem excited to act in it. When that comes together we’re just not sure, but assume it’ll be in the next year or two or three."

Now onto Deadpool and the G.I Joe sequel.

DenofGeek: You are now going to be very busy for the foreseeable future. As well as Zombieland 2, you have signed on for the Deadpool movie and the GI Joe sequel. How are both of those projects developing?

PW: "They’re going great. We’re excited about them for different reasons. Deadpool is just an irreverent, kick-ass, self-deprecating character and they say ‘write what you know’, so... minus the kick-ass! We’ve been developing that with Ryan Reynolds, who’ll play the character of Deadpool. It’s been great."

"And GI Joe is such a fun, fun, fun playground for us. It doesn’t get any bigger than GI Joe. Rhett made his first movie when he was, what, nine?"

RR: "I was 11 or 12."

PW: "It was a GI Joe movie made with stop motion characters, with little action figurines. We were up in Rhode Island where Hasbro is headquartered. It’s such an inspired world and one where excited to play in."

RH: "Unfortunately, we’re not allowed to talk about what the movies about, but just know that we have a deep affection for GI Joe, and that we’ll bring our absolute best to it and hope that that’s good enough."

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick seem optimistic in developing the Deadpool and G.I Joe 2 stories. Fortunately, they practically adore the G.I Joe concept, what G.I fan wouldn't. This is a great head start for the G.I Joe franchise since it is under control by worthy writers rather than a director who failed to make a successful Mummy franchise. Deadpool will most likely film after Ryan is done forming constructs with his galactic ring. Rhett and Paul should focus on Deadpool first since it is a done deal for Ryan Reynolds while G.I may not star the same cast except Duke.

We cannot deny the fact that the 3D technologies help a lot in making the film industry more successful and innovative. Also having heard that the development for Deadpool and G.I Joe 2 stories might come up anytime soon – then having I’m waiting for it. Enough of Crystal Bowersox health rumors, but let’s just wait for the DVDs and Blu-rays of this Zombieland movie cause I missed it on theaters.

I actually thought the Mummy I and II were decent. I also like 3D. So there!

By the way, what is with this Cloe movie? That's some twisted noir-ish crap! Why do they think it would appeal to this demographic??

I'm psyched about the Deadpool movie! Zombieland was awesome and I'm looking forward to the sequel but we'll have to see about GI Joe. I'm a huge fan and have been since 1983 and the movie sucked! We'll see what these guys can do with it.

Im not too sure that I like the idea of a Zombieland sequel being written out specifically for 3D. Seems kinda low.

As for G.I. Joe, I really hope that they do stay closer to the source material this time around. Unfortunately, so much has been changed (for worse not better) that it's gonna be a big challenge to fix it. At the very least, they could give Cobra Commander a decent looking mask.

And Deadpool would be a really cool/fun film if done correctly, but it is going to be released by Fox, and we all know how bad that company could mess up a CBM (Barakapool. Nuff Said.)

After GI Blow, anyone on the face of the Earth would be an improvement to write the sequel. So I guess I have to *gag* give the film a compliment *vomit* and say they can only go up from there.

I still havent seen Zombieeland and never plan on forcing myself to watch GI Joe...I just dont hate myself that much! :P

It's hard to be positive about these guys writing Deadpool when it's being made by Fox - I know a lot of people like the first two X-Men movies (I hated both of them) but other than that they havent made ONE good CBM! Why think that will change with Deadppol?

This is great news can't for Zombieland 2 and Deadpool. And with them writing the G.I. Joe sequel hopefully it will be way better than the first movie.

I thought Zombieland lost it towards the end but still great fun. [frick] any GI Joke sequel.

Anyway, on that note, Happy Paddy's day one and all, I'm off to gleefully perpetuate my own negative stereotype:)

Zombieland was a clever and very funny movie. I'd honestly call it the best movie I saw in 2009. I just don't see a sequel working as well, especially ::rolls eyes:: with the inevitable 3D that all films must now be shot in. The movie told a story, and wrapped up its plot at the end. I don't know about this, but let's see where they're going with this thing.

As for Joe, maybe these guys will be able to salvage the franchise. Solution: act like the first film didn't happen, and start from scratch. We don't need an origin story for the characters. Jump right into Cobra's latest diabolical plan to take over the world! I'm pulling for a pleasant surprise on the level of The Incredible Hulk, which I really liked.

And lastly, Happy St. Patrick's Day to all! Wish we could all hook up out somewhere for a few pints of Guinness and some great comic-shop style conversation. :o)

Well to be honest I dont think they need a sequel. It was not just one actor that Shat the Shark in that film. I think they should just do a Reboot now instead of waiting for the second one to suck. Just keep Snake Eyes. He was the best actor in the whole movie and he didnt speak (thats saying alot). Even kid snake eyes was good.

I absolutely loved zomieland. It was easily one of my favorites of this past year. However i really think it is difficult to write a story for 3D and make it good. I worry they will focus too much on what they can do rather than developing the characters more. I mean look at what Lucas did with star wars episodes 1-3, he was so enamored with the technology and what he could do with special effects he forgot to yell cut when the scene they just shot suck donkey balls. I mean those movies would have been so much better if he had focused on the story and getting good acting out of his cast (accept for Ewan McGregor who was one of the few bright spots in those 3 movies) than what he can do with the special effects. That is my biggest worry. And I cannot wait for Deadpool, ryan reynalds was amazing in his whole 5 min from wolverine and he is the perfect actor to play this role. I just hope they do it justice, and as for G.I.Joe, we will see, I mean I didn’t hate the first one but I can see why everyone else did. I still have my Joe’s from when I was a kid so I really hope they put some effort into the next one and do this series justice. I loved the cartoons as a kid and I would love to see that translate to a more adult based film. I mean pixar pumps out movie after movie that is great for both adults and kids alike. Why couldn’t they do that with the first G.I.Joe?

I think they should look at GI-Joe Requim as a guid for a modern Joe Film.

They can keep the first one to a degree. They have the stage set to add classic comic story's into this.

1. Have Dr Mindbender reanimate Storm Shadow..

2. Have a big breakout of Destro, barroness, and Cobra Commander, by Major Blood, the Drednoks, and Storm Shadow.

3. Zartan working from the white house send secret information to Cobra and they get there hands on a non radio-active Bomb (since its in the future) and detonate it right off the california coast line alah.. Cobra Island.....

GI-Joe/USA vs. Cobra fight for control of the Island while Tomax and Xamot (crimson guard commanders) Fight in court over ownership of the Island based on occupying it.

that would make for a big showdown and a decent way to see all the fiepower of Cobra. HISS tanks, Rattlers, Ravens vs Joes Tanks and Fighter planes.

Imagine The Cobra troopers Fighting to put the Cobra Flag on the Highest grounds....

Then Duke gets the call to cese and leave, because Cobra Island is a foreign country... now only miles away from US territory.

ps:
Looks like the new directors will pick up where GI-Joe left off...same cast, and a continuation of the story set up in GI-Joe TROC.

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/G-I-Joe-2-Won-t-Fix-Things-That-Aren-t-Broken-17123.html

you might think that hiring the writers of Zombieland to write the sequel to GI Joe instead of rehiring the guys who wrote the first movie is a sign that Paramount listened to the movie’s critics, agrees that the movie sucks, and is ready to go a different direction for the second one. You would be wrong. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick recently spoke to MTV and reassured fans that they, “will be faithful to the first film
.”

Good. Despite a few wrongheaded detractors G.I. Joe was a surprising amount of fun. The Zombieland boys seem intent on keeping it that way. That doesn’t mean they don’t have their own ideas and sensibilities. But says Wernick, “It will be a continuation of 'G.I. Joe' [as it was established last summer].”

They will have to introduce a few new ideas though, after all, that’s kind of the only reason to make a sequel. They say they plan to introduce a few new characters and they’re set for a tour of the Hasbro toy facility looking for inspiration. Reese says, “We’re going to be open to what they have, and we’re presenting them with what we have; it will be a meeting of the minds.” But mostly, it’s going to be fun. They did it with Zombieland and G.I. Joe 2 is almost certainly in good hands.

I loved Zombieland, saw it in theaters. Really looking forward to the sequel. Not a big fan of the 3D band wagon but a Zombie flick done it 3D would be cool. Didn't see G.I Joe and I'm hoping Deadpool is everything it should be.
