Bob Iger Hints That More, Non-Blockbuster Disney Movies Will Head Straight To Disney+ Due To COVID-19

Disney is lucky enough to have a new streaming service which has seen a massive surge in popularity since everyone found themselves stuck at home, but that doesn't necessarily mean it makes sense for them to start putting the likes of Black Widow and Mulan on there!

We have, however, seen the studio make some unexpected moves by debuting the likes of Frozen 2 and Onward early on Disney+, while Artemis Fowl is set to skip theaters altogether.

Now, former Disney CEO Bob Iger has outlined some of their plans for Disney+ moving forward.

"There are some we’ve decided to put on Disney+. We already announced one, Artemis Fowl, that would have been released in theaters. Others we’ve simply delayed," he explained. "In some cases we’ve moved things onto Disney+ faster than we would have. Frozen 2 was one of them, but Onward would be the biggest example. It was in theaters when this happened."

"We moved to a pay-per-view period for a couple of weeks where people could buy it and own it," Iger continued. "And then we ended up putting it on Disney+. In terms of movies going ahead after Artemis, there may be a few more that we end up putting directly onto Disney+, but for the most part a lot of the big tentpole Disney films, we’ll simply wait for slots. In some cases we’ve announced new ones already, but later on in the calendar."

On Friday, Disney gave many of its upcoming films new release dates, but should theaters remain closed as we move into the fall and winter, there's a chance they could make some drastic decisions when it comes to adding more content to Disney+. As it stands, they're clearly considering adding more upcoming theatrical releases to the streaming service to keep subscribers happy.

After all, there's now nothing to say the likes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and The Mandalorian will meet their planned premiere dates after production on them was recently stalled.

We'll let you guys know if we hear more!

Cue people thinking this means all these upcoming movies will go straight to streaming, even though he specifically says non blockbusters.

They're not even hiding the fact that Disney+ is where they'll dump all their movies that are garbage and won't make any money in cinemas

@tmp3 - I've always believed that they would eventually start releasing their "B tier" films straight to D+ rather than watch them do shitty in theaters. Films like Nutcracker, Artemis Fowl, and even Dumbo are in that lower class of non guaranteed box office that should be on D+.

@LongMayHeReign - Yeah, but it's not exactly a great advertisement for your platform that it's a dumping ground for garbage like Artemis Fowl or the Nutcracker lmao

@tmp3 - 90% of their consumer base will never see Iger's comments so I think their good.

Give us New Mutans on D+ (even though I don't have it and will most likely torrent it). That movie has suffered to the point I feel sorry for it

@LameLuka - They can't. HBO has the streaming rights to Fox films until 2022
