I love Inside Out, and so went into Soul with high expectations. As soon as they suggested that getting "into the zone" could be a negative thing I started scratching my head; when he achieves his dream and just shrugs his shoulders, they lost me.

Did Pete Doctor just shrug his shoulders when he became a director at Pixar? I'd hope not. I've achieved numerous dreams in my life and I gave a bloody whoop of joy each time. I understand they aren't saying "don't try, just eat pizza" - they want to say "try, but eat pizza too." I just don't think they nailed that message.

The vague "choose your own adventure" ending was also a disservice to the careful plotting of other Pixar films and the investment in the story they had created during Soul. It wasn't asking you "which do you think he will do?" it was saying "it doesn't matter which he picks, now get lost."

After all that... I still loved the movie, Pixar remain way ahead of everyone else in terms of 3D animation and it does have moving scenes and interesting themes. It just didn't land as much as I was hoping for me.
