DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Concept Art Reveals Cut Scarlet Witch Vs. 616 Mordo Battle

Some newly revealed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness concept art offers a better look at the Scarlet Witch's confrontation with Baron Mordo that would have ended with the villain being beheaded.

Both before and after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released in theaters, there was chatter online about Marvel Studios' plans to kill off Chiwetel Ejiofor's Baron Mordo.

The last time we saw him was in Doctor Strange's post-credits scene, and Mordo had embarked on a mission to rid the world of those he deemed unworthy of wielding magic. That was going to lead to him tracking down Wanda Maximoff in her cabin, only for the Scarlet Witch to make short work of the villain by removing his head.

Recently, filmmaker Sam Raimi confirmed that this was the plan in the sequel's Director's Commentary. However, he also revealed that Wanda was set to present Mordo's head to Strange later in the movie (neither of these sequences will be included as deleted scenes on the upcoming Blu-ray for some reason).

While we did spend time with Earth-838's Mordo Variant, the 616 version was nowhere to be found.

We have to believe Marvel Studios has future plans for the character, and there's no denying that killing him in such short order would have been something of a waste. Bizarrely, glimpses of this sequence could be seen in promotional material for the sequel, so it was probably scrapped relatively late in the production process.

Now, we have some concept art that offers a better idea of what this brief battle between the Scarlet Witch and Mordo would have looked like on screen. We don't see Mordo's beheading, but it's clear he'd have been no match for Wanda.

Check out this newly revealed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness artwork below:

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Marvel Cinematic Universe unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. We'll journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

The movie's cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Loki Head Writer Michael Waldron.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters. It's now available on Digital platforms and Disney+, and hits Blu-ray, 4k Ultra HD, and DVD on July 26.

Glad they cut this. We didn't need to know how villainous Wanda was in the very first scene and it leaves the door open for Mordo to come back and do something worthwhile for a change.

@Pssst - exactly this. Alternate Mordo vs Strange already kinda gave us that showdown, but I wanna see it with main Mordo too.

@Pssst - I was just watching MoM and I agree. The Wanda meeting is a nice flip on the old "find a hero in a cabin in the woods and ask them for help" trope. Seeing her behead Chiwetel would have totally stripped that.

@Pssst - We literally know Wanda is evil in her first scene.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Halfway through that scene, and the revelation comes as a twist. I mean, we all figured, but I remember seeing in the trailers the shot where she is powering up in Wundagore with Wong which made it seem like she was going to be fighting alongside the good guys, at least at the beginning. To have her as completely evil and the main villain from the start was a surprise to me.

@Pssst - Wanda revealing herself as the villain in the first 10 minutes of the movie was always a bad idea, revealing herself to the hero in the first 10 minutes was just...wow.
15 minutes in, and Wanda was already committing mass murder in Strange's temple.
Making matters worse is that if you didnt watch Wandavision (as most general audiences) you have no idea what she is even talking about, or why is she so mad.

@TheHumanSpider2 - To be fair, I actually thought they made a decent job of filling the gaps. Wanda dreaming about her children and her talk with Strange at the beginning of the scene give the important information without feeling like an exposition dump. I would have to ask someone who didn't watch Wandavision to see if they where confused, but let's be honest, this has been happening in the MCU for a while. I remember watching Civil War in the cinema with friends and one of them would ask "who is this?" when half of the characters showed up.

@Pssst - True, but most general audiences saw AoU before Civil War, it wasnt the case with Wandavision, a TV show, with absolutely no connection to Dr Strange.

The movie has serious pacing issues, but also a very lazy script, and the short runtime didnt help.

I would've kept Stephen going to ask Wanda for help, but she doesnt tell him anything, I would use the oportunity to explain what happened in Wandavision ("I'm not here to talk about Westview" was a set-up for having both characters present the situation to general audiences), Stephen leaves, and then I'll put the Mordo sequence.
Dr Strange learns about Wanda at the end of the first act, and she attacks his temple in the 40 minute mark (needless to say, I would completely remove the whole Illuminati sequence, and use that time to show more universes, with Wanda chasing Stephen and America using her variants, imagine a Smith at the end of the first Matrix situation).

@TheHumanSpider2 - He did say the first scene of the movie tho. Not HER first scene.

And the tv show to movie connection is a nonissue. This is all the MCU. And I'd be curious as to what resource there is that tells us "most of the general audience never watched WandaVision."

At the end of they day it's no different than someone not watching Infinity War or another tie-in movie. And really, D+ is more accessible than films. A subscription costs less than a single movie theater ticket and can be accessed from home. There are countries that don't have it yet but there are also countries that the movies don't release in.

Felt like quite a bit was cut from this film. Would have been great to do one more dimension in there. Would of loved even if it was animated to get around the whole COVID thing. Voice overs would have been much easier to pull off.

@Itwasme -
About 90% of the movie was reshot when its placement was shifted from before NWH to after NWH.

I think it would have been a cool scene for an opener, but as Pssst stated... (see above).

Glad they didn't just kill Mordo right from the start. I still wanna see that Mordo vs. Strange showdown. Strange did already mention that Mordo has come after him, but I think it would be a waste if we never got to see that because Wanda killed him.

Poor mordo didn't stand a chance. He walked up to Wanda like he thought he was walking up to the paralyzed dude from the first time and got his head chopped off before he could say "too many sor.."

Got to love how they call the MCU Earth 616 but the Marvel comic universe is 616 and the movies are nothing like the comic books.

@marvel72 - There are kind of unoficially two different multiverses as it seems. One where the MCU is earth 616, where dreams are other universes and where there is only one America Chavez, and the regular multiverse.

I would have liked to have seen this. The Mordo thread has certainly been dropped from the first film, and its noticeable.
