DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Concept Artist Shares Early Variant Designs

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness concept artist Karla Ortiz has taken to Twitter to share some early designs for the titular hero, at least one of which inspired the look of a Strange Variant.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced us to several Sorcerer Supreme Variants, and concept artist Karla Ortiz has now shared a first look at some of her early designs which would go on to inform their appearances in the movie.

Ortiz says that she was asked to "do a poster that could serve to build hype and potentially inform new looks" very early on in the production process. The design to the right looks like it may have been the basis for Defender Strange, while the one of the left is wearing a similar costume to the Illuminati's Strange we encounter in the 838 universe.

The middle version is Ortiz's early take on a "Master costume", and while she doesn't specify, that floating head in the background might well have been a precursor to the Sinister Strange Variant with the third eye that 616 Strange battled in the final act.

The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

The Doctor Strange sequel is now playing in theaters.

Its been over two years already, one would expect both studios and fans understand this already, but nope.

And in this movie's case, the mixed reception.
A shame really, both for Sam, and because the studio wont take any risks in future movies.

Eh…the movies going to be a big financial success. The studio has to be pleased.

The script was the biggest issue with the movie, that and I’m not exactly sure Multiverse of Madness lives up to its title. Trailers had people expecting a crazy crossover event and it was more of a Scarlet Witch chase through the 816(?) Universe.

Just felt like the story nor the character arcs were as ambitious as they could’ve been.

NWH made 1.8 bil this past December. Without China. The Batman made 750 mil WW. We are back at least in terms of CBM box office.

@regularmovieguy - I think that’s the lowest it can make and be called ok-ish but really good legs. If it stops in the 800’s that would be terrible. More massive drops will do it. Usually just first to second is massive (usually being a strong word)

@regularmovieguy - It depends, we dont know how big the budget was (6 weeks of reshoots are expensive...REALLY expensive), so there is that, and on the other hand, we dont know the expectations the studio had, we know producers have 2 lines of cocaine, and will think whatever they are making is going to be the next Avatar.
$900M (more or less what MoM will end up doing) is an impresive number for this new era for movies, but the studio maybe expected more, on one hand because of this being an event movie (unlike Black Widow, Shang Chi, and The Eternals), and on the other, because of how expensive it was.
As this Deadline article points out, Black Widow came out during the middle of the pandemic, had a dual release...and still had a minor second weekend drop...and we are talking about a movie which was cheaper, and was a solo (also, a lot worse than MoM, but aparently GA dont think that way). I dont know how Disney will react, but I'm willing to bet they are not putting horror elements or explicit violence on an MCU movie ever again.

I just hope they dont blame Sam, because he is actually the one who made this movie at least entertaining, but we know how Hollywood works, they probably will, just like Sony did in 2007.

But as we said a billion is not the bar of excellence, and as noted above, it would be interesting to finally see a cbm end in the 900’s… if it were to that is.

@TheWalkingCuban - People need to start to understand that a billion is the exception, not the rule, we are not in 2019 anymore, a movie hitting $1B is going to be a huge event from now on.
Jurassic World 3 might make a billion (MIGHT), but I wouldnt be surprised if Avatar 3 is the next movie to do it...we are talking about TWO MOVIES IN ALMOST THREE YEARS reaching that milestone.

I dont hink $850M is terrible, it is what it is, it all boils down to how much the studio spent on it, which could've been close to $400M, considering the reshoots...reshoots that were a mistake in the first place, but the studio already wanted a 2 hours long movie to get more showings, when we already have confirmation the original cut was 2 hours and 40 minutes, and was more than likely a better movie (not saying it would've made more money, it probably had more horror elements, and GA are hating that).

@TheHumanSpider2 - terrible legs I should say. As far as a Strange sequel making 1 billion, that’s more a that would be awesome scenario to my way of thinking. I’ll tell you why it’s hard for folks to accept your view, it’s because NWH was practically 2 billion, so for everyone to treat it as an Infinity War/Endgame level movie makes a billion sound like a cakewalk. The new blockbuster range seems to be 700m-1b while the event film can be who frikkin knows, capturing the zeitgeist.

Studios need to stop throwing $250M at movies, and realise those days are over.
I heard the next Godzilla vs Kong movie is going to have a $100M budget...a few more "failures", and maybe they'll learn.

@TheHumanSpider2 - unfortunately you may be right, but only half right because the problem is theater and streaming is not 100/100, it’s 50/50 (I have no idea what it really is but you’ll see my point shortly) because guess what Hollywood, the population did not double! So they only put a few movies in theaters because of pandemic trends and stream the rest, yet the ones they ones they put in theaters at least make a little money while steaming is not adding enough new subscribers to justify that strategy. It’s almost as if there’s way too much content for any of em, theater or streamer, to really make tons of money. In fact that’s a conclusion I might stick with. It’s all about scrolling through TikToks and reels and YouTube etc with so much free entertainment why pay for anything? One girl yesterday told me she finally sat down and watched tv, I thought she meant TV lol no she meant Netflix (let’s not go on a Netflix tangent, just making a point), people are starting to give less of a crap about stuff.

@TheWalkingCuban - Reason why I think streaming will become the norm in the near future, we already have dual releases or 45 days exclusivity windows...people have a lot more content to choose from, its cheaper, and easier to access.
I think MoM will be on D+ by mid-june, and Disney will slowly adopt the Warner aproach of releasing movies on streaming after 45 days of exclusivity.
While studios only get 50% of the BO (25% in the case of China), they get 100% of the subscriptions for their streaming services, let alone if they charge an extra fee to watch premieres (like Black Widow or Mulan).

@SpaceParanoids - Seeing some of the ideas buried under all the studio mandated action sequences and short runtime, my guess is that Derrickson not only wanted to make a horror movie (instead of a Marvel movie with horror elements), but a character study about Dr Strange himself.
The movie we got have Strange trying to deal not only with the fact that he cant be with the woman he loves (in this or any other universe), but he still cant get over feeling guilty about his sister...this movie just throws these ideas, but does absolutely nothing with them, we have characters in this movie asking one of the most powerful beings in the universe if he is happy (when he clearly isnt) and the movie doesnt do anything with that...Derrickson not only directed the first movie, but also wrote it, and took the time to gave us scenes like these



After the events of Infinity War and Endgame, I think Derrickson was going to dig deeper in this...sure, it was to save the entire universe, but Stephen is the direct responsable for killing Tony, if killing some random thug made him feel guilty, how was he going to feel about killing "Earth's greatest defender"?

@TheHumanSpider2 - OT: I had a bad feeling about the front loaded Thursday to Sunday drop aaaaand this Friday dropped 81% below the opening Friday. If Saturday stays on pace then Strange 2 will wind up with less than 300 million by sunday. A BvS level drop percentage wise even if actual numbers are bigger, meaning it could end up with 360 domestic. I no longer foresee a billion. So I’m at least gonna go ahead and eat crow on second weekend drop but I’m not eating crow for the billion because Ive switched sides: I don’t think it’ll make a billion. Now I’ll be HAPPY to eat crow😁
