Well, doesn't this story just go to show that the Multiverse is a wild, weird place?
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, John Krasinski plays Fantastic Four leader Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mister Fantastic. The actor and director has long been a fan-favourite choice to play the character, so his casting was generally seen as pure fan service on Marvel Studios' part (in the best way possible). Whether he'll play Reed in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot is another matter, but we hope so.
However, potentially casting some doubt on that likelihood is the fact that Krasinski wasn't Marvel Studios and director Sam Raimi's first choice for the role. According to Deadline's Justin Kroll, Daniel Craig was originally set to play the patriarch of Marvel's First Family but backed out due to concerns over COVID.
This is crazy on a number of levels. For starters, we can't quite believe Krasinski was the second choice to play the hero, but it's the news that Craig came this close to joining a major superhero franchise that really blows our minds, and we can't help but wonder if the plan is for him to star in Fantastic Four.
It would be one heck of an acquisition for Marvel Studios and a very different role for Craig. We could see him making a great Reed, but will Krasinski's standout cameo forever overshadow him?
