Even before the first full-length trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released, rumours swirled that Tom Cruise might show up in the sequel as Iron Man. It all goes back to those stories that Paramount Pictures wanted the Mission: Impossible star to play Tony Stark in the Armoured Avenger's first movie before Robert Downey Jr. was cast, but will it actually end up happening?
That Superior Iron Man Variant many fans believed they saw in the trailer has turned out to be a Captain Marvel Variant upon closer inspection. Now, Benedict Cumberbatch has debunked the theory once and for all during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Asked about cameos, the British actor responded: "I can give you just one clue as to someone who may be in the film, because it's coming out quite soon. I'm not gonna say their name, but I'll see if you can guess it from a theme tune of something else that they've done that's quite well known. Ready?" Cumberbatch proceeded to hum the Top Gun theme, only to shoot the rumour down.
"No," he added, confirming that Cruise won't actually make an appearance. "Sorry to disappoint the people that have bought their ticket wanting to see two Tom Cruise movies in one month!"
This isn't surprising, though some fans are likely to be disappointed. A lot of rumoured cameos are likely to be proven false soon, so certain scoopers are going to have a great deal to answer for.
Talking of cameos, a certain someone continues to tease theirs in the Doctor Strange sequel...
