ETERNALS Is Reportedly Heading To Disney+ This January As The Movie Nears $400 Million Worldwide

Eternals is still playing in theaters, but as we start gearing up for December's blockbusters, when will the Marvel Studios movie arrive on Disney+? We have news on that, and a box office update, here...

Eternals arrived in theaters earlier this month, and it's been an interesting ride for the Marvel Studios movie. Their worst-reviewed title to date has been embraced by comic book fans, and the movie felt like a bold step forward for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of ambitious storytelling.

Over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, Eternals managed to earn $11.4 million at the North American box office from 3,165 theaters. With Encanto and Ghostbusters: Afterlife posing stiff competition, this drop was to be expected; however, with $150 million domestically, Chloé Zhao's first blockbuster has earned $368 million at the worldwide box office.

That's a solid result in the "COVID era," especially without a China release. It's likely the movie will eventually reach the $400 million mark, but a streaming debut does appear to be imminent.

According to Streaming Guider, Eternals has been slotted in for a January 12, 2022 debut on Disney+.

This hasn't been officially announced yet, but makes sense with what we know about how Disney is handling the release window for its moves at this time. A Blu-ray release has been scheduled, but we're also waiting on release date news for that as well (chances are it will be around the same time).

It'll pop up on streaming right on my birthday. Haven't seen it yet so I don't know if It'll be a good or bad present from marvel yet

@Mrcool210 - happy early birthday .,
I like it it’s not on my top five this year don’t expect a lot of action

@Mrcool210 - I liked the movie very much. It's something different. Fans have been asking for that for years, and while I get that this movie / fresh direction might no be for everyone, it's still something we should support imo.

Really don't see it getting to 500 mil at this point.

@Origame - it doesn't need to lol
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 6:01 AM
@bobevanz - ...that's what it needs to break even.

@Origame - it needs 400 million to break even
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 7:27 AM
@JoJo1982 - it'd need 440 mil if it had a budget of 150 mil.

@Origame - Weird flex caring what a movie needs to break even. Does anyone come out of a cinema and say "Don't worry about what I think, will it break even..."
Nunyabiz
Nunyabiz - 11/29/2021, 8:02 AM
@Origame - I guess I wasn't the only one not really interested in the characters.
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 8:27 AM
@JakeyChappers - ...why do you think I'm flexing? It's just a fact. And yes, people should care if it breaks even. That determines whether it's getting a sequel.
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 8:29 AM
@Nunyabiz - it's a hard sell. Even the comics weren't all that successful. Then taking into account it only had 2 weeks on its own to build a profit before the next big film in the form of Ghostbusters.
JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 11/29/2021, 8:54 AM
@Origame - doesn’t really make sense since the budget of Shang Chi is between 150-200 million and that movie was making a profit after it made 365 million.
Chappers
Chappers - 11/29/2021, 8:57 AM
@Origame - Regardless of if you think it's broken even or not, I would safely bet that we get a sequel and/or definitely see these characters again
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 9:13 AM
@JoJo1982 - ...who said that was profitable?
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 9:14 AM
@JakeyChappers - why would they make a sequel if they lose money on the first movie? Sure, use the characters in other projects like the black knight movie or the eventual avengers movie, but not a sequel.
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 11/29/2021, 9:31 AM
@JakeyChappers

It kind of matters if you liked it enough to want a sequel.
JonC
JonC - 11/29/2021, 12:54 PM
@Origame - its impossible to calculate what it will need by BO unless you break that box office down by foreign and domestic as each gets a different % return. Also, $150m probably is the movie itself, and does not count the advertising.
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 1:00 PM
@JonC - the rule of thumb is either 2x or 3x the budget. For the sake of arguing, I went with 2.5x. Besides, even the 400 mil it'd need if we're being as generous as possible is kinda pushing it now.
Nunyabiz
Nunyabiz - 11/29/2021, 5:29 PM
@Origame - they normally announce sequels after the first 2 weeks or so if they are a box office hit right?
Origame
Origame - 11/29/2021, 5:40 PM
@Nunyabiz - sometimes yes. I wouldn't take our lack of hearing about a sequel as evidence though. But the box office and critical response is definitely gonna factor in.

Looking forward to it hitting D+! Been wanting to watch it again for a hot minute. I’m not a person who believes in the marvel formula but I love how all the movies this year are especially different from each other.

Was hoping for it to drop sometime before christmas given the 45 day window, but I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer
Mikel9608
Mikel9608 - 11/29/2021, 7:55 AM
@bkmeijer - prolly don’t want to overshadow other content on there. For some reason Disney doesn’t think their viewers have big enough attention spans for it. They only do one major show at a time and will only put cartoons or more family oriented stuff like Mighty Ducks out while a Marvel or Star Wars original is airing. Hopefully that changes cuz that’s the one thing Netflix, Prime and HBOMAX has over it. Once I’m done with that one weekly release I don’t really touch it again except the occasional MCU or SW rewatch. They need more content and they need to start releasing simultaneously
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 11/29/2021, 9:48 AM
@Mikel9608 - yeah that makes sense. Spider-Man, Hawkeye finale and Boba Fett premiere all fall around that time.

I kinda like the weekly schedule, even though it is only one thing. It's enough content for me at the moment, but I do agree it could use more
Mikel9608
Mikel9608 - 11/30/2021, 8:05 AM
@bkmeijer - I should clarify, I meant simultaneously as in multiple shows at once. I’m fine with the weekly release instead of the binge model that Netflix does. I just think we could be getting Star Wars and Marvel content concurrently and it wouldn’t effect viewership. But I’m just being greedy lol I should be thankful we have this much content anyways. Great time to be alive if you’re a nerd like me
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 11/30/2021, 8:33 AM
@Mikel9608 - oh yeah ofcourse. I think they're already moving towards that with having wednesdays and fridays for their big shows. Think eventually that means a Star Wars and Marvel show pretty much every week. Atleast I hope so
Mikel9608
Mikel9608 - 11/30/2021, 8:42 AM
@bkmeijer - that would be ideal imo

Nice. I imagine the Blu-Ray will be released later the same month as Shang-Chi was.

Hopefully Marvel Studios will start making less-expensive films so they can make more profit. At least until the pandemic is over with (if ever).
JonC
JonC - 11/29/2021, 12:55 PM
@LSHF - they really need to switch gears and make a series of low budget first gen Deadpool style movies to reap the profits.

Bring on the damn sequel

Eternals is the worst performing MCU movie ever.

Two other MCU movies came out in during the pandemic and they both did better.

Black Widow did better and it had a simultaneous release on Disney+!

I enjoyed Eternals very much. I only saw it once in theaters but had planned to see it again before I learned it was going to drop so soon on DIsney+. I know US audiences didn't gravitate to it by giving it repeated trips to the theater but international audiences did so that gives me hope there will be a sequel. I also believe Eternals on Disney+ is going to gain it more love and folks reevaluating their initial beliefs on the film.

What's amazing to me Jungle Cruise cost roughly the same as Eternals and already has a sequel planned. Jungle Cruise has made less in theaters WITH China and even with Disney+ profits included has NOT made the same amount of money Eternals has made WITHOUT China in theaters. In fact, Jungle Cruise has potentially LOST money for Disney -yet that film gets a sequel. Why? Because The Rock headlines it? Seriously, a property like Eternals, an entirely unknown property with mixed critical reaction does better financially than a film headlined by a major name giving it a sequel before Eternals makes no economic sense to me. Hopefully, as already mentioned at the end of Eternals, we see more of these characters in a sequel and throughout the MCU.

@String - I also enjoyed Eternals. Preach.

brodie999 - 11/30/2021, 3:33 AM
@String - Me too. Hopefully, when it comes to Disney+, a lot of people watching it will cause the critics to reconsider their opinions on the film and love it just like other MCU movie once they see fans do what the characters do in Eternals.
