5 Great Actors and the Heroes/Villains They Should Be Portraying

Much like the Director's one previously written, this is a list of 5 actors who deserve a superhero/comic book movie under their belt. These are actors that should be top-billed in an epic action picture. Check it out...

Comic book movies are getting better and better as the years go by. Of course The Avengers ruled, but so did Dredd, The Dark Knight Rises and X-Men: First Class. The bar is rising and the studios need actors to fill the shoes of their leading comic book characters fast. Here's a list of the top 5 actors who I think deserve to fill the shoes of the heroes and villains that already exist in the comic book universe.

JOEL EDGERTON AS THE FLASH

Warrior is the best sports movie I've ever seen. It has performances that reel you in at every second and actors that are convincing at every turn throughout, after such a terribly edited trailer, it turned into the surprise of a lifetime and I was happy to see it in theatres. With that said, if I can buy this guy as a chemistry teacher, I'm sure that we could all buy him as the scientist who gets struck by lightning in order to become the Scarlet Speedster. Brad Bird should direct this movie for sure, he'd be perfect.

RYAN GOSLING AS DAREDEVIL

With Nicolas Winding Refn in mind as the director, Ryan Gosling would be absolutely perfect in a no-holds barred take on the Man Without Fear. Gosling was great in The Ides of March and especially Drive, where he plays a mostly silent stuntman who moonlights as a driver for robberies by night. His silence is his most dominating attribute because he has just the right presence to hold it over, making him a blind man would be a nice twist because it puts a spin on the playboy attitude that he has (which is perfect for Matt Murdock).

JUSTIN THEROUX AS DOCTOR STRANGE

For his strange ability to maintain my interest in such mediocre pictures like Your Highness and especially Wanderlust (which was actually good thanks to his strong supporting performance), as the most down-to-earth guy I've seen in a movie in quite some time, I nominate Justin Theroux for the role of Doctor Strange. He was great in Mulholland Drive, and, not to mention, he did the screenplay for Iron Man 2, so he's already got ties with Marvel. Though he's not the greatest writer, the fact that he's a decent enough actor, and the fact that he's able to captivate even in the weakest of movies, proves that he should be a top contender for the potential career-defining role that it is indeed.

JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME AS RED SKULL

After being utterly disappointed by the dullness of The Expendables 2, I checked out some of Van Damme's direct-to-video work and watched the two recent Universal Soldier films. I didn't think I'd like them too much, but to my complete surprise, they turned out to be a pair of solid action movies (especially Regeneration). Van Damme is great in these movies and ever seen JCVD he keeps on getting better and better. With Expendables 2 not giving him enough to do with an otherwise great performance, and for being the only bright spot in that plane wreck, I nominate Van Damme as the next Red Skull. Imagine Cap versus a Red Skull who can actually fight for a full take... that's what I'm talking about (watch the opening of JCVD and you'll know what I mean).

JAKE GYLLENHAAL AS BATMAN

Speaking of another actor who keeps getting better and better, Jake Gyllenhaal has been on a role nowadays (literally). The roles he's taken have been nothing short of solid: from his great turn in Brothers, to his nuanced turn in Source Code and most recently (and most effectively for Batman) to his excellent partnering role in End of Watch. I nominate Jake Gyllenhaal to unite with Warner Brothers for another take on the Caped Crusader; especially since the route he took with Disney didn't go so well after the mediocre openings for Prince of Persia arrived, I don't think he'll be looking to Disney any time soon for a role in the Marvel universe (if he does, good for him though because he deserves a role either way).

Van Damme as Red Skull? - WTF???

Hugo Weaving was perfect as Red Skull. Its a terrible shame he has such scorn for the easy unchallenging role as he saw it - but hey.... i guess everyones gotta put bread on the table somehow (lol).

Weaving said in an interview that he wasn't happy with it, so I say bye to him and hey to Van Damme.

Nice article, man! Gotta say, though, some of that casting is kinda weird.

Daredevil: Chris Pine or Bradley Cooper
The Flash: Chris Pine
Red Skull: Hugo Weaving
Doctor Strange: That's a tough one. Isn't Patrick Dempsey in talks for that?
Batman: Karl Urban

Yeah, Jakes a little off for Batman. Gotta say Sam Water. I had my heart set on Jeffrey Donovan, but he's getting old for a 4-7 year away reboot

Definitely some out of left field choices, but I think it's best to make those kind of choices when it comes to casting actors in movies. I like a lot of the actors that you guys have been suggesting though, especially Karl Urban as Batman (yet I do hope that his take on Dredd can get a sequel or two).

And Van Damme isn't as bad as Arnie. Schwarzenegger's a has been, while Van Damme's still getting stuff done and he's becoming a better actor while doing so. So there you have it.

I still say my picks for Red Skull, if Hugo Weaving doesn't want to return to the role as he has stated in recent interviews, would be either Mads Mikkelsen or Robert Knepper

Tell me either one of them wouldnt be an awesome Red Skull?

I get what you're saying about Van Damme, but I also think you're kind of on a JCVD high. He's not a great actor. He's an awesome martial artist, a very physical action star, but his acting just isn't up there.

JCVD is the only movie with him that I presently own. It's a great drama, but it tells the truth through fiction. He's something of a failure in the movie industry, and I don't want to waste my time thinking this guy deserves a fourth, fifth, and sixth chance simply because he's owned up to his mistakes. He needs to impress me beyond telling a version of his life story.

Hugo Weaving is my man. He's a personal inspiration to me considering he also lives with Epilepsy as I do, and has managed to overcome it. Outside of that, he's a phenomenal actor, and I'd like to see him outside his usual villain typecasts. I can totally understand his choice to NOT reprise the Red Skull in the future.

I could live with this casting. Except Jake as Batman. And I can sort of imagine Van Damme playing Aleksander Lukin... but Damme isn't a great actor, at all.

I'm stunned that none of you see what I'm seeing in Van Damme potentially playing Red Skull. I think he'd be great because it'd be a change-up from all of his other action roles. For an example of how good of a villain he can be, just watch his scenes from The Expendables 2. He's the only bright spot in an otherwise dull movie.

LOL, good for you, but that's just your opinion. I'm sticking with Van Damme because he deserves a role as Red Skull and I think that he'd do a way better job at it than Weaving did. So there.

My 3 choices for Batman

1. A 45-55 year old Batman=Gerard Butler
2. A year one Batman=Ryan Gosling
3. A 35-45 year old Batman=Karl Urban(not sure about him as Bruce Wayne though)
thejon93rd
thejon93rd - 2/24/2013, 8:24 AM
Gosling would make a great Batman, but I'd prefer to see him cast as Daredevil because I can see a new Daredevil movie getting a grittier R-rating than the last one (which already works for Gosling's filmography as of late with doing mostly R-rated pictures). I don't see WB turning Batman into an R-rated franchise any time soon (unless they were brave enough to try and potentially fail).
thejon93rd
thejon93rd - 2/24/2013, 8:25 AM
Edgerton might be a great choice for Batman too.

Don't understand all the hate for this.

I'm ok with the Flash pick.

Absolutely agree with the DD pick. If you've seen Drive, you'll understand.

I see where he's coming from with the Red Skull pick.

And i honestly don't get all the hate for Gyllenhaal. He is NOT just a pretty boy actor. He's delivered some great dramatic performances.

Only pick i question is the Doc Strange pick. Only thing i know the guy from is the Irish villain in Charlie Angels, and that he's married to Jen Aniston.
thejon93rd
thejon93rd - 2/24/2013, 9:27 AM
Actually MrMxyzptlk, Gyllenhaal was superb in both Source Code and End of Watch. Those are the two movies I focused on with my decision to nominate Gyllenhaal as the next Batman. He's a solid actor who gets better as he ages, and I think that Batman would be perfect for him (especially since he hasn't been in a big-budget Blockbuster since Prince of Persia, so it's not like we're getting Gyllenhaal overload in movies like say Johnny Depp as of late).

i think i need to watch Drive again. I am like the only person in the world who thought Gosling sucked in that movie. His silence and strange way of delivering his lines had me thinking his character had down syndrome or something. if that is what we would get as his version of Daredevil I would freak the hell out in the theater.

Wait your first two should be switched! When daredevil was at fox the director( the guy who directed the grey) said he was gonna get Joel edgerton to play daredevil. And people really want Ryan gosling as the flash in the fan-fic section
thejon93rd

I think he'd be a better Flash, but he'd be a great Daredevil as well. So either works fine.
