Baddies That Need Movie Love: Electro

Baddies That Need Movie Love: Electro

I think it's time to delve into the world of Spider-Man and take on one of his most "shocking" baddies to date. Electro, despite is rather eclectic get-up, has proven to be a dangerous foe for the Web-slinger for over 40 years now. Let's take a look at why this Baddie Needs Movie Love.

Maxwell Dillon spent his time working as an electrical engineer and lineman. During a routine job repairing a power line, he was struck by lightning. The shock caused a mutagenic change in Maxwell, that transformed him into a living electrical capacitor. Initially, his powers were weak, so to subsidise and grow his powers, he stole electrical equipment from Stark Industries. While this was happening, Magneto approached Maxwell, asking him to become a member of his Brotherhood, claiming that his powers could rival those of Magneto's, but Dillon refused the mutant leader. The very next day, Dillon was approached by a small-time thug who came to collect money that Maxwell owed him. When the thug drew a gun, Maxwell quickly responded by sending a bolt of electricity through the man's chest, killing him. Taking on the name Electro, Dillon turned to a life of crime and his first victim was J. Jonah Jameson. Electro broke into the Daily Bugle and robbed Jameson's safe right in front of him. Jameson quickly blamed Spider-Man, claiming they were the same person. During the confrontation that occurred, Spider-Man was electrocuted and nearly killed when he touched Electro. Spidey ended the battle when he donned a pair of rubber gloves and turned a fire hose on to the villain, essentially causing him to short-circuit and temporarily lose his powers.

Electro went on to be embarrassingly defeated by Spider-Man multiple times. Finally taken to the brink of his tolerance, Electro decided to take over New York City by hijacking the city's power supply. Having his plan thwarted by the Web-Slinger once a gain, he was convinced to retire by Spidey, but that did not last very long. The insane Spider-Man clone Kaine, began to dispose of all the enemies of Spider-Man, one by one, causing Electro to fear for his life. The electric villain then temporarily joined Mysterio's Sinister Seven, who banded together to defeat Kaine. The clone was son defeated and disappeared, which allowed Electro to return to retirement. When The Rose opted to fund an experiment that would heighten his powers, Electro decided he would participate
and in return, act as an enforcer. After paying off his debt to The Rose by eliminating several members of The True Believers. Having new-found powers, Electro attempted once again to prove his strength and gain respect by trying to take over the city's power supply. Not surprisingly, Spidey was there to stop him, this time, wearing an insulated suit. In an effort to make a final grand gesture, Electro tossed himself into the Hudson river while fully charged, seemingly killing the villain.

Electro later resurfaced as a member of the new Sinister Six, who were formed to kill Senator Stewart Ward and Doctor Octopus, whom they disliked for his arrogance. Electro's powers had reverted back to their pre-amplification levels and he was now wearing a new blue and white costume. When Venom turned on his fellow Sinister Six members, he attacked Electro, leaving him to die. He once again survived and when he returned, he was wearing his usual green and yellow costume. In the early 2000's, Electro had teamed with Vulture. Both were attacked by Spider-Man, who had assumed the duo had kidnapped Aunt May. In a fierce battle, Electro had used his powers in a more "intelligent" way, using them to blow up nearby cars, killing innocent civilians. The battle soon moved to a gas refinery where Spidey once again came out on top, badly injuring Electro. The villain quickly recovered and joined Green Goblin's Sinister 12, who were defeated thanks to the help of the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Captain America, Iron Man and Yellow Jacket.

Electro has taken on several other Marvel heroes in his time. Early on, he was confronted by Daredevil when he attempted to break into the Baxter Building. He was quickly defeated by Daredevil. In a battle against the Falcon, he was defeated mainly due to his lack of respect for the Falcon's power. Electro also attacked the Fantastic Four during the wedding of Reed Richards and Sue Storm. Come to find out, his mind was under the control of Doctor Doom. Thanks to Mr. Fantastic, Electro has no recollection of the incident. In an attempt at retribution against Daredevil, Electro formed the second version of the Emissaries of Evil, which consisted of Gladiator, Stilt-Man, Leap Frog and the Matador.

In looking at the many rogues of Spider-Man, there is no denying the fact that he some very eclectic people to battle against; ranging from Sandman and Rhino, to Green Goblin and Kraven. All of them offering up something very different from one another. We have seen Doc Ock and Green Goblin on film, both of which were done fairly well. In the third Spider-Man film, we were forced to watch Sandman and Venom, or a watered-down version of them. In the upcoming reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, we will see our first glimpse of the Lizard, which could prove to be highly entertaining, (time will tell on that one) and we are likely to get an idea of who the Web-Slinger will take on next. I say...bring on Electro. While he can come across as cheesy (just look at that get-up!), he could prove to be a very cool baddie to see on film. With the special effects we have these days, seeing a villain with powers like this would be a ton of fun to see. His costume would have to be toned down a bit to make it more acceptable on the big screen, or you could even go the Ultimate route (I know, I know), or even the look he had in The Amazing Spider-Man, with his face covered in burns and scars. Either way, I think it's time we see this baddie hit the silver screen.

There have been many fan-casts that include Electro, and there is one name that has shown up repeatedly; an actor who has owned just about every role he has been given. Ben Foster has proven time and again that he is a phenomenal actor often over-looked in his roles. He has actually had parts in two previous comic book movies (X-Men: The Last Stand, 30 Days of Night) and was a stand out in both of them. Some of his more impressive roles include a villain role in 3:10 To Yuma, a role in which he stole the spotlight from the likes of Russel Crowe and Christian Bale. In Alpha Dog, he played a brother on the hunt, tracking down the punks who kidnapped his younger brother. He continued on to star opposite Woody Harrelson in The Messenger, gaining quite a bit of attention for that role. No doubt he has the chops and the passion to take on a role like this and add a new, twisted spin on the character.

Stay tuned for my new series "People Who Need a CBM"!" Don't worry, I don't think that title will stick.

I have wanted to see 2 villians for a long time - the Lizard and Electro. We're getting the Lizard- now it's time for Electro. You're right- his powers could be spectaculat on screen with today's effects.

I always thought, even as a kid, that Electro looked amazing. Best costume out of all the Spidey villains. Must be those Green Bay Packer colors.

Electro is an awesoee villain. I like how he was portrayed on The New Spiderman Man Animated Series on MTV and Spectacualer Spiderman those where awesome interpretations of him. Ben Foster can play any character and he wuld own it he is one of my favorite actors. He needs to get more roles.

The last incarnation of Electro, were he was employed by Doc Ock, was the best. That old costume is just corny.

Villains I want in future Spidey sequel:
Electro, Mysterio, Rhino, Kraven, Scorpion, Carnage, and Kingpin (though he's more of a Daredevil baddie)

@Prot3ctor - That's a hell of a Christmas list. My only criticism is that more villains usually dosen't mean a better movie- the plot's gotta stay focused on the hero- too many villains mean, yes you guessed it,a SM3 train wreck.

Electro's costume ain't that bad, but that mask would have to go for sure.

I've been saying this for years. They should do the storyline of where Electro loses his powers and then regains them by being electrocuted.

I'd love to see Electro in a film at some point, but I'd rather he not have the 616 costume. I like his Spectacular Spider-Man (TV) costume the best.

I have a good idea as to where he would get his "costume". It would be a government issued suit, a special suit specially tailored to him after his accident. The suit would contain him keeping his electricity in check so to speak. He needs the suit. Without it, his electricity will just go haywire. I also imagine a movie Electro with some scars, one of his eyes white & patchy fried white hair. Electro definitely needs movie love!!

Electro is a very underrated character. Dude is badass.

as long as they stay away from his Ultimate universe look, then im good. It should be somethin like his look from either Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

or from Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

@Prot3ctor- What they should have done in SM3:
Maryjane and Pete marry.
Jonah sends Pete to Cape Canaveral to shoot his son's return form space which the venom symbiote is attached to.
The symbiote senses Peter's power and bonds with him.
He goes back to NY and gets dark; his marriage is strained.
Dr.Conners has a 'cure' for his missing arm but Pete, who's interning at his lab , advises against using it.
Peter realizes his dark behavior is wrong and has a 'Uncle Ben' moment where Aunt May talks sense to him.
He takes a sample to Conners for analysis hoping he can help him.
(this part I stole from the movie)Pete goes to church to pray for help, the bells ring and Pete realizes sonics are it's weakness.
The symbiote detaches from Pete and bonds with John Jameson who also was at church looking for peace from being jilted at the alter by MJ and had subsequently turned to alcohol.
Once they bond, Jameson realizes Pete is Spider-man.
Pete goes to Conners lab were he discovers the lab results, but no Dr.Conners and Peter fears the worst.
As he and MJ patch things up, he hears news reports of an major incident at ESU and leaves as Spider-man fearing Conners may be involved .
The Lizard is ransacking the place, and a fight ensues as Venom, knowing where Peter works , shows up to kill him.
Spidey and Venom have and epic battle, when Pete realizes The Lizard is Dr. Conners and appeals to his humanity to help him fight.
The Lizard has a moment of clarity and helps Pete defeat Venom, knowing his weakness to sonics.
Dr.Conners reverts back to normal and the symbiote is confiscated by S.H.I.E.D.
Pete and MJ are happy again, and John Jameson gets the help he needs.
I know it's not comic book accurate, but I was going on what had already been established in SM 1 & 2.
The end.

0SageMode0 Dead right, those two costumes are perfect examples of a good modernization of classic costumes (and we still have the classic feel from it as well). Also I'm a sucker for both costumes and won't mind at all to see it portrayed in the big screen.

As for Electro himself, I'd really love to see him, alongside the many classic Spider-Man villains surely. They are all interesting characters, though if done even in a slightly wrong way will end up looking cheesy as hell...but considering how good most people are today in making movies, I can have my hope. :)

I would love so much to see Electro and wouldne't be "shocked" if we see him in the sequel. As for his suit, I think it should be a burned (greean and yellow) electrician's outfit and he should have lightning bolt type scars on his face. That would be sweet.

make the lightning bolts sewn to his costume. throughout the movie with different battles the stitching starts to come loose. after final battle with spidey, the bolts have come totally loose and when he is being led away by police we see classic electro look.
